Em's POV
I buttoned up the blazer, smoothing the creases in my pencil skirt and white blouse. Making sure I looked professional, I pinned my hair up in a loose bun and quickly put on my black heels. Today was evaluation day, which meant that everyone in the office would be on their best behaviour.
I walked out of my apartment, waving goodbye to the baby sitter that was feeding Elliot, and took in a deep breath. I could do it. Promotion, here I come!
After I reached the carpark, I slid gracefully into my Audi and placed my black shoulderbag in the passenger seat, looking in the rear mirror to see if my make-up had smudged. Nope, it didn't. Then, I drove off towards work, feeling a sense of accomplishment for not crying.
* * *
"Hey Emmi!" Seraphina, the manager of the company waved at me from her workspace, and I shot her a smile. The office was awkwardly quiet this day, because of the fear of gettting fired. All except for one girl- Tricia. She was certain that she would get promoted, so she sashayed into the office, her skirt too short.
She reminded me of sluts.. Like Willa. Ugh, everything reminded me of their affair. "Hey, Emerald," Tricia smirked at me, and I grinned fakely at her.
"Hello, Tricia," I replied as fakely as she did, and I could sense the hatred between both of us.
"Hope you don't get fired or anything," She 'complimented' before turning and walking into her office, with that annoying glass door.
I walked to the end of the row, and stuffed my key into the keyhole of my wooden door, admiring my name sign hammered onto the board. It said, "Emerald Mines, Marketing Head." Yep, that was me, head of marketing in the department. Next step- Vice chairman.
I carelessly dropped my bag on my work station, and sat on my leather office chair, opening my macbook and checking the stock records. They were quite good, and I was sure that I would get a giant bonus at year end.
I finished browsing through the sales records, and clicked on Google Chrome, immediately going to Facebook to stalk people. I saw loads of statuses, and they were all random. Only one caught my eye. It was Willa's. I didn't even know why I was friends with her! Her status read, 'Had the time of my life ;).'
I clenched my fists, and slammed it on my table, then ran it through my smooth hair. Wow, Blake obviously never learnt his lesson about cheating, and continued to do it. I hadn't expected him to end up with her. At all.
I didn't want to see anything anymore, so I quickly closed the browser and continued typing in reports of the workers. Suddenly, there was a sharp knock on the, and Miley, my secretary, poked her head in. "Emmi? I think it's your turn soon," She said softly, and I gulped. Oh no, I had a chance of getting fired!
"Who's in there now?" I asked, and she gave the annoyed look, which made me understand- It was Tricia.
"Oh, okay, I'll just go out now," I said, getting up from my chair and walking out of my office towards the meeting room, where the big bosses were. My heels were clacking on the marble ground as I literally jogged to their office.
Coincidentally, Tricia came out, looking smug. "Hope you get fired," She said evilly, shooting daggers at me with her eyes and strutting past me. I rolled my eyes at her, knocking on the heavy door twice, before slowly pushing it open.
"Come in Emerald," Mr Levin said pleasantly, inviting me to sit at the seat opposite three of them. I walked slowly, trying not to make a fool of myself as I settled down in my chair.
"Don't be worried," Mr Bradford said, giving me a tight smile.
"I can't help it," I said breathlessly, and they chuckled humorlessly.
"Okay, so from our records, you've never been late for work," Mr Perry said, looking at the record file, and I nodded, smiling proudly. My record had never been broken! "And, you've rised from a sales person to head of marketing in a year and a half?" Mr Levin asked in disbelief, and I once again nodded proudly.
They started whispering among themselves, and I sat on the chair awkwardly twiddling my thumbs and awaiting their conclusion. When they were done, they turned to me, beaming. "It seems like you have the perfect attitude to be the Vice Chairman of our Californian branch," Mr Bradford announced, and I gasped, waiting to see if it was a prank.
"It's true. You are perfect," Mr Perry added, and I let out a little squeal. "Your office will be on the next floor, and you're allowed to customize it," He told me, and I nodded excitedly. I'd always wanted that promotion!
"Do you have a family, Emerald?" Mr Levin asked, and I nodded. "A son, Elliot," I smiled, thinking of my fair-haired little boy. "What about a husband?" He asked again, and I was dumbstruck. "My husband, umm, he.. Cheated on me," I whispered, and Mr Levin shook his head in disbelief. "I'm sorry," He apologised, and I nodded.
"I wish you the best for your child and you," Mr Bradford said, standing up to shake my hand. "You are dismissed," They smiled, and I returned it, walking out.
Outside, I did a happy dance, and did a fist-pump happily. I was promoted! I would get more money to buy stuff for my child! "Are you alright?" Emmalie, who had been walking past, asked me, and I nodded, jumping up and down in my heels. "I got a promotion!" I shrilled happily, and she squealed, giving me a tight hug.
"I'm so proud of you!" She praised, giving me another pat on my back, before walking back to her work station. Just then, another of my colleagues came. "Emerald, you need to meet one of the clients. The company is thinking of withdrawing their stocks, and you need to convince them," Luke said, and I saluted him, hurrying back to my office to take my bag.
~*~*~
I was meant to meet this mysterious client at some restaurant to convince him not to withdraw his stocks, therefore here I was, seated in a corner. My client was two minutes late! I hated late people! I looked down at my Juicy Couture watch, and tapped my foot impatiently. If he wasn't here in five minutes, I would so ditch him already.
I picked up the menu and studied it carefully, looking at the pictures of the chinese food here. They were so interesting! How did they pronounce these. Char Siew? I spent awhile studying and trying to read the words in my head, and then I heard a deep voice.
"Hey, is this Miss Mines?"
Oh, the guy was here. "Yeah, are you the one I'm meant to meet?" I asked.
"I'm Blake Richards," The voice replied, and my jaw dropped. No, it couldn't be. It couldn't be Blake Richards! There had to be more than one Blake Richards in the world! "Oh," I stuttered, and he chuckled. "You sound like someone I used to know," Blake said to me unknowingly. I still hadn't dropped the menu.
"Um, I think I have to go," I said, standing up quickly. Fate had to be against me; My menu slipped out of my hands, and I saw a very shocked Blake. "Em?" He asked, and I glared at him. "It's Miss Mines to you, Mr Richards," I said in a formal tone, and he smiled sadly.
"You look good," He complimented, and I narrowed my eyes at him. What was he doing to me? Was he trying to make the feelings I had tried to destroy come back again? "Thank you Mr Richards. So, from records, it says that your company wants to sell it's shares in this company?" I asked, surprised that I could keep my cool.
"Do you want to get some food first?" Blake asked pleadingly, and I shook my head firmly. "I'm not hungry," I replied, trying to control my anger. Seeing my ex husband made all the memories come back, and it wasn't good at all.
"You know, it's alright if you pull out in the shares," I decided to say- I didn't care. I wouldn't get fired if they pulled out of our company. I just wanted to get away from my cheating ex husband! I stood up quickly, putting my files in my tote bag.
"Can't we just go back to when things were just like they were?" Blake begged, desperation evident, and I almost agreed. I missed the times with Blake. Then, I remembered what he did, and my blood boiled. "Do you have any idea how I felt that night?" I replied harshly, and left him there, dumbstruck.
@Blake's POV@
I hadn't expected Em to be the one I was meeting. A year and a half ago, she was struggling with her lowly position in her office, but now, here she was, a marketing director? She must've worked extremely hard to get from her old position to this one.
We stared at each other awkwardly, and I rushed to think of something to say. Who knows how much time I would have with her? "You look good," I managed to say, and she narrowed her eyes at me. Then, she started speaking, but I was too captivated with her beauty to listen properly, therefore I just nodded.
She'd changed a lot since the divorce. Her usually dyed honey blonde hair was gone, and now, it was her natural faded mustard blonde color. It looked good on her. Her eyes were as green as ever, and her lips were inviting. I wanted to kiss her.
"Do you want to get food first?" I asked her, keeping my calm exterior, whilst my insides were going crazy. She glared at me, and shook her head. "I'm not hungry," She said icily, and started flipping through her files.
I felt a pang in my heart- She'd rejected me. Of course she would! We were over! "You know, it's alright if you sell your shares away," She butt in, looking pissed, and started standing up, probably going to leave.
"Em! Can't we just go back to the way things were?" I begged desperately, and she grimaced. "Do you have any idea how I felt that night?" She said angrily, malice in her tone. Her sentence made me freeze, and she took the opportunity to walk out of the restaurant, leaving me there.

"I don't think we should pull out our shares," I told my boss, and he raised one eyebrow at me questioningly. "Why shouldn't we?" He asked, and I started making up points to dissuade him from selling the shares.
"You know, they may profit and all.." I trailed off as my boss, Tristan, grinned at me. "I know why," He mused and I cocked my head to one side. "You met Emerald Mines, right?" He said, and I nodded slowly. "The people who meet her always do the same thing as you. She's good on the eyes, eh?" He asked, and I clenched my fists at the thought of my boss saying she was pretty. Em was mine. And, only mine.
"Yeah she is," I smiled at him and he chuckled, patting my back. "I won't pull out of the shares yet, because I think business is picking up. But, I may soon, so make use of the chance to meet her," He said heartily, and I smiled fakely at him. If only he knew...
"Oh! Do you by any chance have her name card?" I asked Tristan, and he took out his leather wallet, searching through it and pulling out a plain name card. "Yep! My last one! You're lucky I gave it to you! Many of my workers have asked for it!" Tristan said haughtily, passing my her name card. I grasped it tightly, like it would disappear, and looked at Em's professional picture. She looked pretty.
"Thanks," I said, before walking out of Tristan's office and back to mine.
