the flames scream as she throws herself atop the funeral pyre,
a burning body,
soon to be in burning hades' grasp,
a thousand fleets at the ready
to be released from the dock
just as aeneas is released from dido's heart
i begged you knife in hand,
tears streaming from bleeding eyes
i begged you to stay,
but fate told you you must leave
a fate which without, i dare say
you would've left anyway
but keep in your mind i did not wish for this
piercing pain of love
like an arrow through the heart
or perhaps through the back
so i'll breeze past you in the underworld,
lips touching, silent,
as i breathe in sychaeus' gentle kiss.
and this is a queen you speak of. no more, no less.

THIS is a complete draft but i remembered how we read and translated the aeneid last year in latin and i'm doing it again in ap latin so obviously i'm pretty well-versed in the story of dido and aeneas and i kinda have known it since i started studying latin like five years ago so i like... know what's up. but anyway i was inspired by this dido and aeneas story to write a poem after listening to no quarter by led zeppelin bc led zeppelin seems like the type of band to make a bunch of ancient roman/greek epic poem references in their songs and so is sufjan stevens ( shout out to mystery of love )
anyway i'm aware this is like shitty but bare with me
