Stubborn Hearts:

IV.   Butterflies in a Frenzy

AMANDA

I ran my hands through my hair continuously, frustrated to the point of shoving the book to the floor but even that won't help into figuring out this stupid math question. I lifted my head only to scan the classroom, watching as every student in here were too deep into solving the questions in the pop quiz which I wasn't ready for. I chewed on my pencil--a worse habit my mother tried to break me out of--but I groaned in frustration.

"Can't solve it?" A quiet voice whispered.

I glanced at the brunette who sat beside me, smiling at me sweetly. I smiled back, knowing my distress could be seen on my miserable face.

"I suck at Math," I grumbled, hearing a soft giggle escape from the girl's lips.

"Just this once and next time," the girl begun to solve the math questions while I gawk at the quickness of her hand scribbling on my paper, "study."

I chuckled, nodding quickly, "Thank you so much!" I grinned, gazing back at those hazel eyes that belonged to this girl.

She was pretty. Her autumn hair was pulled back into a fishtail as it fell over her shoulder. She wore light make-up on her caramel skin. Smoothing out her white cotton dress, the girl smiled at me once more before getting out of her seat and handing her quiz to the teacher. Her boots clapped against the floor as she tugged the sleeves of her indigo cardigan, nervously, while the teacher scored her quiz.

I glanced down at my quiz, writing my name down as I waited until more students piled behind the girl, not making it obvious that I cheated.

Tapping my pencil against the desk, I gazed out the window, seeing the way the girls in their Gym clothes ran on the track field. Some were walking while the rest kept jogging. There was one girl who caught my attention. The way that turquoise Mohawk bobbed as she ran. Long, tanned legs moving with ease as tattoos shimmered underneath the sun's light. She kept rolling her sleeves up to her shoulders, letting her tattoos be gawked at by others. She seemed careless to other people's thoughts. Unaware of the glances she received nor the whispering girls she ran past.

She reminded me of my cousin, Marcy.

How she walk through the streets without a care in her flamboyant outfits. With her dad being the CEO of Langston Construction, Marcy would spend money like crazy. Letting others idolize her seasonal style with expensive clothing and accessories. It was a waste of money, if you ask me but Marcy didn't care. She was a spoiled brat and lived her life only making herself happy.

"Aren't you going to turn it in?"

I looked back at the brunette girl who encouraged me with a smile who had returned to her seat.  I quickly took my quiz to the teacher. I chewed on left snakebite, nervously, hoping he didn't recognize the same answers as the other girl. The sound of a grunt made my heart pound against my chest as Mr. Harding looked up at me through his metal rimmed glasses, those piercing blue eyes burning holes into my own, probably seeing the fear of getting caught in them.

"You didn't cheat, did you?"

YES! I wanted to confess but I shook my head, not trusting my coward voice.

"You did good, Miss Langston," he said, marking my quiz with a big, red ‘A’ on it.

I squealed in joy mentally as I walked back to my seat where the girl was reading a book.

"I'm Amanda, by the way," I told her, smiling.

She looked up from her book to me, returning a smile, "Melanie."

"You know, you didn't have to do my quiz. I could embrace a fail for a day," I chuckled, my grin spreading wider as I looked down at the A again.

She laughed, softly, shaking her head. "It's okay. I was worried your head might explode from over thinking too much."

"Believe me. Math and I are mortal enemies."

She laughed and just hearing her laughter made me join in. Her laughter was contagious and all I wanted was to be near her welcoming aura.; let myself be ravish by her kindness. The bell rang and I stood up, shoving my notebook in my bag as I walked out of the classroom with Melanie at my side. She began to speak about the clubs I could join and who were needing members as well as the ones she was in. Surprisingly, she was in the Debate Team and the Yearbook Club and if she wasn't in either of them, she would be in the music room playing her violin.

Who wouldn't love this girl, I swear!

"...you should join the Yearbook Club," Melanie's eyes brightened with excitement. "You get to use a Canon camera and take photos of anything that could be suited in the yearbook!"

"I'll think about it," I promised, grinning as she nodded eagerly.

"Joining clubs are we now," a honey-like voice whispered in my ear and I shivered, glancing at Helena who walked beside me.

Those violet eyes gazed back at me with a smirk plastered on her kissable lips. Today she was dressed in a torn sleeved Subhumans shirt with black jeans and worn out Converse. Her plugs were black with a skull in the middle of it. A snake was entwined with the skull, slipping out of its socket, reminding me of her ring. Her black, pixie hair was hidden underneath the black beanie she wore.

Her eyes flickered to Melanie and somehow, I saw them hardened and her demeanor suddenly changed. All in a matter of seconds.

I glanced back at Melanie who seemed to fidget underneath Helena's glare as she bit her bottom lip, nervously.

"Shouldn't you be heading to class and minding your own business?" Helena sneered, her glare hardening even more if that's possible.

Melanie gasped, her eyes gazing at Helena as flicker of emotions passed through those hazel orbs. "I-I'm sorry," she murmured and walked away, hastily, to her class.

"Seriously?!" I slapped Helena's arm, making her drag her glare to me. "Why do you have to be so mean?!"

She smirked and took a step forward but instinctively I stepped back, my back hitting the wall behind me. Her smirk widened as she caged me in with her body, those violet eyes boring into mine. Her hand rested on my waist, drawing circles on my exposed skin.

"I-I should be going," I whispered hoarsely, my eyes half shutting.

"You should," she said, her voice low and seductive, "but then again you don't want to."

I chewed my snakebite as those violet eyes zeroed in on them. Slowly, her face leaned forward and the anticipation of feeling those lips on mine grew but the moment never came as a hand grasped my wrist and hauled me away from Helena. I watched her as she stared at the empty space before her in confusion before looking at the person who pulled me away from her. A glare set on her face, Helena moved forward only for the person to step into my view with her hands on her hips, firmly.

"Can't you find another girl to play your game, Helena?" Melanie growled, a different side of her was shown. A side that didn't like Helena one bit.

Helena smirked, crossing her arms in front of her chest, "I didn't know you had a backbone, Mel. Did Tony finally taught you to stick up for yourself?"

I watched as Melanie's hands balled up to fists yet nothing left her mouth.

"You know," Helena whispered, taking a step forward, towering over this petite pixie, "if you wanted some lessons with me, all you had to do is ask or...maybe beg."

"You're a pig, Helena," Melanie sneered. "You should watch what you say, it might kick you in the ass later. After all, karma kicked your ass before."

Helena's gaze hardened as she mumbled something to Melanie and walked away, not once looking back over her shoulder.

Melanie turned around, her gaze leaving from Helena's form before meeting mine. "You should know Helena's bad news."

I rolled my eyes, "Don't worry, I got the memo before."

Melanie nodded, not even cracking a smile as she walked by me, heading to our next class. My mind would often wander to what Helena murmured to Melanie or how Melanie looked so...tough while standing up to Helena. Did they have a past together? What did Melanie mean 'after all, karma kicked your ass before'? Everyone's warning me off of Helena. Was she dangerous to the point I might be in danger in her presence?

I glanced over my shoulder to see the Mohawk girl from earlier staring at me as she closed her locker. She shook her head before walking away, turning at the end of the hall and disappearing.

I never thought transferring schools would be so dramatic.
