Chapter two

I was a slacker before I entered boot camp in 1943. I remember I got drunk with my college roommate in a Brooklyn Cafe late at night. Thomas was with me. "Hey Chuck you gonna enter the war effort like you said?" I looked at him, drunken to a pulp. " Yeah! I gotta sign these papers though."The bar tender looked at us, noticing that we were pretty much wasted. "You idiot kids should leave." I looked at him like he was stupid. " We aint going nowhere!!" I yelled. We where thrown out of the restaurant on the cold hard ground. "I have to get home Chuck." Thomas said. And with that, he was gone. I felt alone in the street. I looked down the sidewalk still laying on the ground. There was a man in uniform walking down the sidewalk towards me. "Charles Davidson!" I felt confused. "How do you know my name?-" Not important." He said. He extended his hand at my hand to lift me from the ground. Which he did. " I have a proposition for you Chuck." I looked at him with a smirk. "The police have gotten reports of 2 drunks in Justice Cafe causing disturbance. They will be here in 2 minutes to arrest and take you to jail for the night. If you don't want that to happen you can give me your enlist papers and you'll be off for boot camp for 5 months and then for Operation Overlord. What do you say?" I thought about it. I looked at the man and said, "What the hell."
