Dear Unknown Soldier,

The war you fought in, perhaps died in or were wounded in, was supposed to be the war to end all wars. Man, however, is a slow learner. Countless millions have, since the guns fell silent in November 1918, been sent to their deaths. Man's inhumanity to man knows no end. In this century and the last, it has been women and children, civilians as well as soldiers who have been the victims of wars, of genocide.

On this hundredth anniversary, let this be an end to it. It is right that we remember men and women like you but I fear that the remembering is the easy part. It would be better to forget wars gone by and instead remember that the dead are the greatest advocates for peace. We do not honour you by these commemorations but rather shame you with our inability to live in peace with each other.

Yours in peace, Gill
