20. Movies & Fries

"Unfreaking believable." Muttered Layla under her breath as she bent down to pick up an empty cartoon of fries. "I'd been wondering why they were so hungry all of a sudden, now I have zero doubts. Bring the girls buddy, bring the girls. For what? Moop the floor? Clean their mess? Ha, I'm not cinderella. I think someone's gotta teach those boys a lesson." She stood a bit straighter and pointed to her chest with a dirty fry. "That someone being me."

We'd arrived at the movie theatre 30 minutes after the showing started so we had to buy tickets for the next one. Meanwhile the boys suggested we stopped at the burger joint and ordered something to eat.

We did that.

It turned out not so great.

I stopped sweeping the floor and leaned against the broom, letting out a huff, "Like you'd be able to get something through that thick skull of them. I think it might be football related. Do you think they got their heads knocked so many times that they started malfunctioning? Or maybe they had a seizure and they weren't properly treated. Who knows?" I shrugged.

It had all started when James dared the guys to finish their burgers before he did. The winner would get an extra cartoon of fries.

The moron's accepted, but when it was obvious Ryan was going to win, Tyler got his hands on James fries, which meant he dropped his burger to protect them, which ended with his burger on the floor, which lead to a fry fight. Layla's jaw had dropped to the floor when they'd started throwing fries like they were paper planes. "What are you doing dipshits!? Those are fries! They are precious! Don't you dare!"

Did they listen to her? No.

We cowered into the corner, wrapping our arms over our heads to avoid the flying greasy fries to tangle in our hair until the manager took notice and called them out. And what did our knights in shining armour do?

They dropped the fries and made a run for it, leaving us to face his wrath.

Yep.

That's what really happened.

"I can't believe James left me! Did you see him!?" Hannah came back from dropping the trays into the trash can, raising her hands in frustration. "He just chuckled and scurried after the other baboons as they made a dash for the door."

Layla chuckled, "Baboons," She repeated tasting the words. "I like that!"

"Yeah, wow. Don't count me on the next outing." I replied as I finished with the floor.

"Ha! No way girl. Next-time is only-girls-allowed." Said Layla swirling the cloth in her hand.

"Only brains allowed would be more fitting." I muttered.

"I still can't believe this! He left." Hannah was still on a trance. "He won't get away with it this time. I wont fall for his sweet voice and puppy eyes anymore."

I pressed my lips together to keep a laugh, but Layla wasn't so reserved about it, "Yeah, right. You'd be making up as soon as the word 'babe' leaves his lips."

"I will not!"

"You will girl. I'm telling you. That boy knows you can't stay mad at him." Layla pointed out.

Hannah waved her arms in a worn-out gesture, "It's not my fault he is so cute!"

"Cute my ass. He left us here to clean what he started on the first place. He should be the one dusting tables and mopping the floor, not the other way around." Remarked Layla, accentuating each word with a tap to the table. "I'm going to tell the manager we are finished here." She said before sauntering off, the rug hanging from her fingers.

When we got to the ticket office, the boys were waiting for us in line holding snacks, not even a bit ashamed of what they'd made us go through.

"There you are! Our favourite trio!" Exclaimed Taylor as we got closer.

I narrowed my eyes at him. If he thought for a second that he could redeem himself with a few calculated words he was on the wrong track.

"There they are! The troublesome trio!" Layla mocked.

James came forward ignoring her comment, "Hey babe, I got us pop corn and cokes."

"Do this guys ever stop eating?" I wondered out loud.

"Never do, sweetheart."

Out of all the things I could have ever expected, Ryan replying my rhetorical question wasn't one of them. Neither was having him so close to me that I could still feel his breath fanning the side of my face and the wild beat of my heart inside my ears. When did he come so close?

"Huh...thought so." I muttered, taking a step to the side.

I'd managed to avoid Ryan since we stepped into the movie theatre. Linking arms with Hannah or Layla and walking ahead of them, seating between them at lunch so he couldn't take the seat beside mine. He noticed. I didn't care. I needed that space for as long as I could stretch it.

Ryan watched my movement with weary eyes, but didn't say a word.

"I even brought you a butterfinger. I know how much you love them..." I could still hear James as he tried to make amends with her girlfriend.

Hannah looked at the treat with woe eyes and for a moment I thought he'd gotten her, but then she shook her head, "You won't make everything right with a snack James." She made an attempt to walk away, but James intercepted her.

"No?" He asked confused, his eyes on the butterfinger still snatched between his fingers. "You are saying no to delicious, mouthwatering butterfinger?"

Hannah huffed. Huffed! I needed to record this. I looked to Layla and sure enough, she was looking at the scene, her eyes like saucers.

"No, James. You all left us there to deal with the mess you started. We had to apologize to the manager and clean everything so they let us go. And I think...I think I don't want to talk with you right now," James jaw dropped. "At least until you apologise to Layla and Kalley for making them clean your mess."

His mouth opened and closed like a fish, "You serious?"

Hannah kept walking, catching up with us as we entered the movie theater. When he got the hint that she was, he let out a groan,"But...but babe..."

At that moment I felt really guilty, but then again, he brought that upon himself.

I settled down beside Layla, trying to look unaffected when Ryan plopped down on my other side, his male scent drifting over to me, and his arm brushing against mine on the armrest. His green eyes met mine the moment our body parts touched and we stared at each other. My eyes narrowed in on his and he narrowed them back, neither one of us willing to give it up.

I jutted out my chin stubbornly and looked ahead to the screen, without moving my arm. And I swear I saw a smile curve his lips before I turned all the way. He got comfortable beside me, stretching out his long legs and crossing his feet at the ankles. I tried to look annoyed by his presence, truth was, I liked having his arm touching mine, the warmth of his body transferring into mine. That's why I never moved it.

We spent the entire length of the movie like that, his forearm pressed against mine, one or two casual bumps of his knee, his breath hitting my neck when he let out a long sigh. Every time he touched me I felt my legs turn to Jell-O. By the end of the movie I didn't know whether to get away as fast as I could or throw myself at him.

As the movie finished I turned my head to the side meeting a pair of deep green eyes staring intensely into mine. My hands tightened around the armrest and I knew. I knew what those eyes were communicating. It was time to talk.
