Kara’s P.O.V.
“How to begin? Do I have to say every detail?”
“In order to help you, yes. If you’re worried if the details are gruesome don’t. I’ve heard horrible stories”
“I was 14, she was only 12. She was gonna be 13 the next week. It was gonna rain so we took a shortcut through a park. On our way two guys jumped us, they had BB guns but they looked pretty real so we froze. They took us to another side of the park, when we got there, there were two mattresses on the floor. They started to shoot, one hit me with the gun on my head, I was unconscious. When I woke up, I had blood all over me. I had 3 stab wounds, and I’m pretty sure I was raped. I told the doctors I didn’t want to know if I was or not.” I begin to cry. “I was 14. We were just kids. I think they thought maybe I was dead. Cause I had nothing, compared to what they did to her. Somehow I got up, blood coming out of me, and I look at her. She was---” my tongue was tied, I had knots on my throat from the images.
“She was already dead?”
“She was mutilated. She--- she was stabbed 17 times at least… and her face… her face was just gone. They stabbed her in the face!! Who does that?!!! She was just twelve years old. She did not deserve that.”
“Neither did you”
“Yeah but, she had a future and I had nothing”
"Blaming yourself won't help you. You survived that's what's important right now... Can I see the scars?”
“No, I mean, I had laser removal they just look like a cut I had when I was a kid”
“Do you feel better by letting it out?”
“A whole lot”
“All right, I would like to see you again, next week. I’ll let you go back to your son, how does that sound?”
“Okay, can you please not tell my boyfriend?”
“I can’t share anything I discuss with my patients with anyone else. But maybe you should tell him so he can understand what you’re going through.”
“I don’t think he’d want to hear this”
“Still, you should try. Maybe start with your sisters, they were there when you went through the depression. They will definitely understand why.”
“I’ll think about it… thank you”
**Back with Tyler:
“Hey” Kora was there, but no Blake.
“Hey, Blake went back to the house to get some stuff, he should be on his way back… How’d it go?”
“Okay, I guess. I’m coming back next week”
“Blake was real worried about you.”
“Well, I’m sure his aunt can comfort him” someone knocks on the door.
“Hey” Blake walks in with a bag “Can we talk? Alone?”
“I’ll be outside. Let me know if you need anything” Kora leaves.
“I brought you some clothes. And a sweater, I know how cold you get” he sits next to me.
“Thank you”
“I also found this” he takes out the engagement ring out of his pocket “Can I ask why it’s not on your finger?”
“I’m sorry. We were just fighting all the time I just figured this wasn’t gonna go anywhere so I took it off before you did”
“Baby, I’m never gonna take it off you” he grabs my hand and puts the ring on my finger. “What’s going on? I need you to talk to me”
“I know, but not about this”
“Kara--”
“Blake, please… it’s not good”
“Is it about your mom?”
“No… Baby please I just, I just want to forget”
“Forget what?”
“Not now, you don’t want to hear this”
“I do if it’ll help me understand what’s going on”
I decide to tell him, but with no details and not all of it. “When I was 14 I found my best friend dead on the woods, that’s it”
“I’m sorry. Why would you thing I wouldn’t want to hear it?”
“I was 14, I didn’t need to see that. Telling someone makes me remember her.”
“Right, sorry. When I was home I was thinking, we really need a vacation. Just the two of us”
“What about the kids? And Tyler?”
“I don’t mean now. After he get better and we think he’s ready. I don’t wanna lose you, we really need it. We were so happy when we were home alone”
“So what you wanna be happy for a week?”
“No, but we need more than just one day alone”
“Remember all those days ago when I told you I had some good news? But you lost the game so I didn’t say anything?”
“Yeah”
“I was gonna tell you I was ready”
“Ready for what?”
“To marry you. I guess I was wrong” I could see the disappointment in his face, like he failed me.
“I talked to my aunt… Told her to never come here again”
“Now? After all this time?”
“I’m sorry”
“Mommy?” I turn around in a flash.
“Tyler? Baby, you okay?” Blake goes get the doctor.
He nods “My head hurts”
“I know baby, you’re gonna be okay”
Doc: “Okay, how are you feeling little man?”
“Okay” he answered. I grabbed Blake’s hand cause I was scared and he always made me feel safe, no matter how mad we were at each other.
Doc: “He looks okay, but I still want to keep him here overnight”
Blake: “Of course”
Doc: “Only one of you can stay”
“All right” I answered.
Doc: “I’ll come back later to check on him again”
“Thank you” he leaves “Okay, I’ll stay and you can---”
Tyler: “Can daddy stay?” he cuts me off
“Are you sure? You can’t play in here honey”
Blake: “Kara, I know how to take care of him”
“I know… but I’m his mom” I whispered to him.
“And I’m his dad, I love him all the same, you don’t trust me?”
“I do trust you I just--- I wanna be here too”
“All right I’ll talk to him”
“No” I pull him back “You stay, he wants you here, I’ll go home”
“Hey, I love you” he tell me. I wasn’t even mad at him anymore for what he said.
“I love you too” I kiss him and he kisses back.
“I still want to marry you someday”
I chuckle “Call me if anything happens”
“Nothing’s gonna happen, but I will”
“Okay” I walk to Tyler “I love you baby, daddy’s gonna stay with you okay?”
“Okay”
“I’ll see you tomorrow”
“Bye mommy”
“Bye” I go to Blake “Is your aunt still home?”
“I don’t know. But please--”
“I won’t do anything. I don’t want any more trouble. I just want to get home to the kids and that’s it”
“All right”
I leave the hospital with my sisters, now I just have to face Cynthia. I had no more strength in me to even yell, I just needed to sleep.
