*flashback to senior year at high school.*

The class was over. Hamilton had beaten Jefferson in a debate. Now usually Jefferson wouldn't have gotten mad. But today was a bad day, and this was the last thing he needed.

As he noticed Hamilton in the cafeteria, something made him walk over to him.

"Hamilton."

The younger senior turned his head around.

"Jefferson. How does losing feel?"

"Pretty good, you should know, you're more used to it."

Hamilton raised his eyebrows.

"Excuse me?"

"You heard me."

Some people were looking at them now.

They didn't notice.

Jefferson's cold fury burnt with dangerous intensity.

It wasn't Hamilton's fault he was mad, he was barely mad at him; it was just debate for God's sake.

But he was there, and he needed to yell at someone.

"Well, at least I don't run out of words like that."

Jefferson resisted every urge in his body to not punch Hamilton in his stupid know it all face.

"Well, at least I'm not a little bitch." Jefferson spat at him.

"Well at least my family's not fucked up like yours," Hamilton answered without a second thought. He shifted his position.

"Well at least I got a family that's alive," Jefferson yelled loud enough for everyone to hear.

The cafeteria went silent.

Jefferson hadn't thought before speaking.

He noticed Alexander looked like he'd just been slapped. Maybe he should have hit him instead of talking; it would have hurt him less.

Why wasn't he responding?

He just looked up at him, pain in his eyes.

Hamilton felt his mind fogging up and his eyes feeling heavy, he could feel his lips already quivering. He tried to hold it back; he tried to say something. Why did that hurt so much? He tried not to show his weakness, but his will was too weak. He was weak. His eyes itched and burned from holding the tears back, and his throat was tight. He could feel a cry starting to form. He wished that he could push his emotions down so deep that they could be forgotten, but he couldn't. So he began to cry.

Mulligan came up behind him, grabbing him and taking him away from the crowd.

Jefferson looked around, seeing faces of disgust from each one of the students in the cafeteria.

But the face that stood out; the face he hadn't noticed.

Lafayette.

His brother walked up to him; he could sense the anger from afar.

Thomas had always been a role model for his brother. He'd never seen himself as someone anyone would want to look up to, but his brother both repeatedly mentioned it, and it became evident after a while.

He was not allowed to make mistakes; he was not allowed to break the image his brother had of him, holding him up so high.

Lafayette's eyes were watering.

He didn't recognise the look on his face; he'd never seen it before.

Disappointment.

He stopped in front of him, just staring.

Jefferson opened his mouth to try and explain himself, but nothing came out. The words stopped in his throat.

Out of nowhere, his brother, his little brother who wouldn't hurt a fly reached his hand out and slapped him. The slap was as loud as a clap and stung his face.

"Le stupide."

He walked away, supposedly going to find Mulligan and Hamilton.

Jefferson stood there, speechless still.

His brother was right, and he had all the right to do that.

Jefferson left school early that day.
