Chapter 2: A Day in the Life of the Doctor
Tea POV
It was lunch time and I was currently dragging Joey to the library with Tristan and Yugi following behind. Tristan, Yugi, and I had decided to talk to Dr (L/N) a bit more to help us prepare for of mythology test and heaven knows we couldn't leave Joey alone for 2 seconds without him getting into trouble. He was struggling pretty hard against me.

"I don't wanna talk to that scary monster lady," I felt compelled to smack him.

"Joey, Dr (L/N) is a nice woman who happens to study things which are objectively scary. She only talked that way at the end of class to teach some pervert a lesson,"

"No way Tea! There's something wrong with that lady! Didn't you see that cloak? She's gotta be a witch!"

"Joey, it's probably a keep sake or an old relic. It doesn't mean she's a witch," Yugi assured him. Tristan huffed.

"Also helps that witches and monsters aren't real,"

We finally made it to the library and found Dr (L/N) closely examining a book written in a language none of us had seen. After passing Joey to Tristan, I walked up and gently tapped on her shoulder.

"Um, Dr (L/N)?" She looked up with a curious look in her eye.

"Hm? Oh, Tea correct?" I nodded.

"Yes, and these are Yugi, Tristan, and Joey," She smiled kindly.

"Please to meet you. What can I do for you students?" Tristan answered.

"We were hoping you could help us review a bit on your lecture for our test," she nodded.

"Of course! I'm always happy to help with my field," we handed her our notes, and after reviewing them a bit, she smiled at Yugi.

"These are excellent notes Yugi! So long as you study these, you'll be fine!" He blushed.

"Um, thanks! I really enjoyed you lecture! But can I ask why you looked at me funny during it? It was like you were expecting me to attack you," Her face darkened for a minute. Her eyes filled with terror, as she had been through a horrible traumatic experience. However, it disappeared as soon as it came as she forced a bashful smile.

"Oh I'm sorry Yugi, you just happen to look exactly like this guy I used...to know,"

"Was he a romantic partner?" I asked, very interested.

"In a way, but it didn't end well. He frightened me at times, so please don't take offense Yugi!"

"No it's fine! I'm just sorry I reminded you of him,"

"Apology accepted! Now Tea and Tristan, I suggest adding a few more details to your notes. I know!" She dug into a brown leather bag hanging off of her chair and pulled out a large cream book with a green stone in the center of of the cover and strange symbols surrounding it. She handed it to me and I struggled to keep it up. This thing was heavy! How had she carried it with one hand?!

"Study the pages involving Dracons, werewolves, vampires, and sucubi from this book and you'll do well. Don't worry, each monster is only one page. It's just that this book has a lot of different types of beasts," Tristan took the book from my hands and nodded.

"Thank you Dr (L/N)!" She shook her head.

"Just call me (Y/N). I'm only 22 guys, no need for formalities!" We dropped of jaws. I was the first to try and speak.

"22?! I knew you were still young but I didn't expect you to be that young and so accomplished!" She smirks.

"Well it gives you guys something to strive for," Joey gave her a suspicious look.

"So, how come you've got that book with you. Wouldn't think you'd need it,"

"Joey! That's rude!" Yugi stated.

"It's alright Yugi. That book happens to be what started my career. My grandfather gave it to me when I was a child and I couldn't stop reading it. He passed away a couple years ago so I always have it with me to remember him!" Joey's look drop.

"Oh,"

"Forgive him (Y/N), he's convinced you're a witch from what you said at the end of class today," Tristan explained before Joey elbowed him. She mischievously grinned.

"Oh, and how can you be sure I'm not a witch since I delight in the mysterious and grim?" She gave her best impression of a witch's laugh as Joey latched to Tristan who did the same. Her laughter returned to normal.

"Sorry, I just had to. Calm down boys, I'm only teasing. But who knows, maybe there are sinister forces out there," I rolled my eyes.

"You can't truly believe that,"

"Oh I do believe it. There is evil in this world, no doubt, and when you're in a field like mine, you see some pretty unexplainable things,"

"Like?" Yugi excitedly asked.

"For another time maybe. For now, you 4 should start heading back to your classes," Just as we got up to leave, I felt something on the table vibrate and saw that it was (Y/N)'s phone. She picked it up and her face morphed into disappointment.

"Oh no,"

"What's up teach?" Joey said as he finally stopped being a coward.

"I needed to bring some of the relics I brought with me back to the museum but my assistant just texted that he had an emergency,"

"Well we could help you!" Tristan offered. She shook her head.

"No, I couldn't ask that of you!" I took her hand.

"We insist!"

"Think of it as a thank you for improving our notes!" Yugi added. She sighed.

"Alright, since you guys are so eager. Meet me after the bell rings and we'll head out!" The bell rung and we rushed out the door. I turned back to wave at (Y/N).

"Thanks again (Y/N)! See you later!" She waved back and I noticed something in her eyes. Worry? No, it looked like:

Fear.

Timeskip
Yugi POV
As promised, we met up with (Y/N) after school to take the boxes of artifacts back to the museum. Lucky we convinced Joey to go since then we could each carry one box. We had to be very careful since some of the stuff inside was fragile. Most of our trip to the museum involved us asking many questions to (Y/N) about her life. Apparently she was born in America and has been pretty much all over the world. The funny and adventurous stories she told us really helped us to pass that time. When we finally reached the museum, she led us into her office on the far side. She unlocked the door to reveal a classically disordered work space filled with books, loose papers, and notes. She put her keys and her box on an oak desk before turning to us.

"Ok, be careful when you place the boxes down and please watch my cat because he cannot,"

I was confused by this until I felt something brush my leg. I looked down to see a small, thin, gray tabby with a blue jay feather at his ear. Looking at his blue eyes, I noticed the lens were faded, making it clear he was blind. ((...don't judge me. My book, my warrior cat))

"That's Jayfeather. Just call him Jay. He's pretty grumpy most of the time so don't try and pick him up and only pet him if he lets you,"

I placed the box in my arms down before extending my fingers to the tom. He sniffed them before hissing. Luckily, (Y/N) picked him up before he could scratch me.

"No! Bad Jay! These are my guests!" The cat gave a bored look, almost as if he were ignoring her. She sighed, unamused before putting the cat down, only for him to scurry off.

"As you can see, I have the world's most frustrating cat!" We laughed.

"Thank you guys again for helping,"

"No problem!" Tea insisted. Joey, who had been snooping around the room, suddenly flipped a lowly chalk board with writing from the book (Y/N) had been studying earlier. It appeared she had begun translating it.

"Hey teach! What's with voodoo writing here?" (Y/N) quickly flipped the board back over.

"It's Ancient Greek actually, and I have been working diligently to translate it! Speaking which, I should get back to work and you should get home before dark. It is winter so the sun will be setting soon!" She began pushing us out rapidly, as if she were hiding something. Seeing that she needed to work, we said our goodbyes and left. It had unfortunately become dark as we neared my house and we were a bit nervous.

"I'm telling you! That chick's hiding something!" Joey continuously chanted.

"Maybe because you snooped through work she hadn't finished!" Tea growled. The both of them began arguing until Tristan found a way to break it up.

"Hey Tea, do you want to study from the book?"

"Don't you need to Tristan?"

"Nah, I filled in the details with Yugi's notes," he said before handing it to her. She began flipping through the pages with had wonderful and terrifying drawings of beasts and detailed descriptions of them. Tea seemed to enjoy it.

"This book is so interesting!"

"Careful Tea! It might be some kind of cursed book that turns people into frogs!"

"Seriously Joey, enough of that! Hey, one of the pages is marked!" We gathered around the book in order to see the monster.

"A Sucubus? Isn't that the monster (Y/N) was talking about at the end of her lecture?"

"Yeah Tris, it's the one she went coco over!"

"I wonder why the page is marked," I said out loud.

A loud noise suddenly came from the darkness. We paused, staring in the direction. Tea elbowed Joey.

"Ha ha. Very funny,"

"Wasn't me!"

Low growls filled the air as we huddled together. I then felt my body freeze as 4 pairs of venomous green eyes peered from the shadows. Then the creatures the eyes were connected to revealed themselves.

Massive black dog like creatures stalked into the light. Their amber fangs hung from their mouths like sabertooth tigers, their claws were red and looked more like knives, and finally, spiked tails were raised high into the air as they crept closer. I laughed nervously.

"Nice doggies?"

They roared and charged at us. As the biggest pounced at me, I waited for my life to end. I then heard a furious yowl and open my eyes to see a familiar gray pelt clawing viciously at the eyes of the creature. It desperately bucked and swung its head to try and dislodge the cat. Eventually, Jayfeather clawed one of the orbs out and then plunged his paw into the empty eye socket. The monster bucked and wriggled, growing weaker until it finally collapsed in death. I could only stare in disbelief at the small tom. I then remembered the other monsters and turned to find them with arrows embedded into their head and chests. Jay then ran pass me and curled around the feet of (Y/N), who stood there with a crossbow and the hood of the cloak over her head, giving her the appearance of a mighty hunter.

"Everyone alright?"
