Marco had quietly been staring at Valerie for the past 3 minutes.
His hands shoved into the front pockets of his jeans while she lay motionless and silently on the king sized bed. Her naked body covered underneath a thick comforter.
Valerie knew he was standing there she just didn't acknowledge his presence because she didn't care.
Marco swallowed the lump that had formed in his throat then cleared it, "How are you feeling?" He nervously asked while he took a seat on the bed next to her.
Valerie who was facing the other way clutched onto the thin sheet underneath her. She felt useless and completely worthless.
Marco fidgeted with his hands while he stared down at the orange clay tile floor.
"It's been a week since we've been here and you haven't left this room." He awkwardly told her noticing the pile of food that she hadn't touched at all for that morning.
Valerie barely eat in the past week, Nick would force her to eat small amounts even though she didn't want her to.
Her grip on reality was slowly slipping back into a dark insanity.
She could hear and see things again things that she shouldn't see or hear.
Marco looked down at her and frowned. It was like Déjà-vu all over again.
Then he completely realized it was similar. What caught his attention was the 4 empty orange prescription bottles on the nightstand beside the bed. He reached over to grab them.
Marco dropped them all, they made a noise when they hit the tiled floor and rolled away, "Valerie where are the pills?" He calmly questioned staring at one of the bottles that had finally stopped rolling.
Valerie didn't reply to his question, she just wanted him to go away and leave her alone. She didn't even want Nick around.
"Valerie," Marco said firmly, "Where are the pills?"
She shuffled around a bit, just clutching onto the covers underneath her a little tighter.
"Valerie!" Marco suddenly shouted gripping onto her bare shoulders tightly and forcefully flipping her onto her back.
Valerie started to cry once she felt someones foreign touch roughly grip her shoulders. She felt like Johnny made her feel. Pathetic and weak.
The memory of what he did surged back within her mind and she felt terrified.
Marco realized what he had done and let her go, he rubbed his face with his hand before letting it fall back into his lap, "I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to Valerie it's just I need to know what you did with the pills I got for you."
Valerie sat up and adjusted the cover on herself again, tears still streaming from her eyes, down her cheeks and to her chin. She pulled her legs into her chest and buried her face into her thighs to sob.
The door to the bedroom slowly creaked open with Nick poking half his body in, he furrowed both of his brows together when he saw Marco seated right beside his crying girlfriend.
He came in quickly, body a sweaty mess from working out with Elena, Marco's older sister.
"Did you make her cry?" Nick asked with an aggressive and deep tone.
Marco rolled his eyes and shook his head, "I didn't mean too-"
Nick scoffed incredulously, "But you did."
Marco stood up and kicked one of the empty prescription bottles, "That, I made her cry because I asked what she fucking did with all the pills our family doctor prescribed."
Nick crouched down and grabbed one of the pill containers, "Valerie these were full earlier what the fuck did you do?" He questioned pushing past Marco.
Valerie looked up at Nick from sobbing into her thighs and bit down on her lower lip she rocked a little trying to stop herself from crying.
Impatiently Nick's glare became harder and icier, "I asked you a question."
Valerie slowly shook her head, "I flushed them." She replied in a soft voice that could barely have been heard.
A sudden wave of relief flooded both Nick and Marco as they felt their muscles relax.
Marco touched Nick on the bicep and cocked his head for him to follow him out into the hall.
Closing the door behind him Nick leaned against it as Marco awkwardly shuffled around. Nick watched uninterested as he rubbed away sweat from his forehead.
Marco exhaled and shrugged his shoulder, "Valerie dude I don't know how to explain but I can't have someone else I care about let depression kill them."
Nick shook his head, "She's not going to kill herself, she flushed them because she didn't want to be tempted to overdose again." He said trying to convince himself more than Marco.
Marco chuckled, "Your mom, she overdosed and thats what killed her."
Nick looked skeptical, "Your dad said she died from a cardiac arrest."
Licking his lips Marco nodded, "I know but it's because she OD'd and that led to a cardiac arrest, your mom was bipolar too but not Valerie bipolar she had Bipolar II."
Nick kind of pieced it together just then. It explained her mothers constant depressive episodes and her erratic behavior at times while he was growing up but he never even thought that maybe she was mentally ill.
"I loved your mom, I loved her like my own mom I mean she gave birth to our little brother so she was family to me."
Nick laughed sarcastically, "Fuck that bitch."
Marco shrugged his shoulder, "I know she left you but she was sick dude."
Nick rolled his eyes, "I stopped caring about her a long time ago. Actually I started to stop caring about her when I met that girl." He pointed at the door behind him, "My mom left me when I was 6 she raised you guys longer than she raised me."
Marco nodded, "I know she wasn't your ideal mom I'm sorry but look, just watch Valerie because she's more unpredictable than anything." Marco slowly walked down the hall and until he turned left and disappeared.
Nick went back inside the bedroom and looked over at Valerie who was laying down again, probably asleep he thought.
He didn't know how someone so physically sweet could be so damaged on the inside.
He thought about what Marco said, that she was unpredictable and it was true that's what scared Nick.
Valerie was bipolar with psychosis. It wasn't just something that could go away.
Nick gathered a change of clothes and a towel so he could shower.
Before walking into the shower he looked back at the lump on the bed and sighed, "Sometimes I wish you were normal."
He shut the door behind him to shower.
Valerie clutched the sheets and let a tear slip out.
-
"How do I look?" Elena, Marco's older sister asked staring at herself in the living room mirror.
"I'd smash." Nick cheekily replied as Marco rolled his eyes and took a rip from the bong he had in his hand.
Marco's sister was more than attractive she was tall and curvy. Her skin was a deep olive tone that contrasted with her green eyes and kinky Afro shaped hair. Nick found her to be gorgeous but he didn't like her at all.
Elena smiled but flipped him off through the mirror, "Fuck off." She replied going back to touch up her lip gloss.
"Whatever I already did anyways." Nick replied with a smirk as he grabbed the bong from Marco's hands.
"Where are you even going?" Marco asked sitting back on the leather couch.
Elena turned around and grabbed her clutch from the coffee table, "I have a date with Claudio Castellano."
Marco chuckled, "Ew the gross racer dude?"
Elena glowered at him, "At least I'm not fucking a 50 year old woman with a husband."
"She's 48." Marco retaliated at his sister who shrugged.
"Whatever I'm out." She replied disappearing from the room and out the front door of the Hacienda.
Marco smacked Nick in the arm, "You slept with my sister?" He asked in disbelief.
Nick frowned coughing from the deep bong rip hen just took, "It happened like two years ago chill out."
Marco stood up, "Whatever I've got a date."
Nick laughed for a second, "The 50 year old?"
"She's 48." He murmured leaving out the front door.
Nick realized he was left alone in the large villa that belonged to Marco's father Antonio and he wasn't completely left alone, Valerie was asleep upstairs but she didn't want him around for long.
Taking one last hit from the bong the weed was cashed and Nick positioned himself on the couch to fall asleep.
-
Nick's phone rang and he jolted awake from the deep sleep he had fallen in.
For some reason he dreamt of being tied to the bottom of the ocean while people watched him like a spectacle.
He sat up, patting his chest for his phone then reached into his pockets, he looked at the caller ID and groaned.
"What?" He barked into the phone annoyed that she had woken him up.
"Mira cabeza de pinga calmado."
"You woke me up the fuck do you expect." Nick said still sounding groggy and tired.
"Okay then I won't let you know that your fucking girlfriend is at a car race getting drunk off her ass."
Nick shook his head and he suddenly wasn't sleepy anymore, "That's impossible she's upstairs in bed."
"No she's right here, two different colored eyes, brown hair, dancing throwing back shots like it's nothing."
Nick sighed, "Okay look keep her there I'm on my way text me the address please."
"Apúrate this girl looks like she's insane right now."
Hanging up the phone Nick began to pull his boots on, he really didn't know how Valerie managed to get out and when she snapped out of her depressed state.
-
Dancing between a bunch of random sweaty people Valerie couldn't feel her body she was numb with only the sensation of her heart beating quickly and rhythmically.
Her dilated pupils looked at the neon lights like they were heaven, she stopped dancing to stand and stare at them.
She swallowed the lump in her throat. She could taste the blood that was running from her nose on her lips and inside her mouth.
The sweat on her body glistened and her makeup was dried on her cheeks, she shut her eyes and stood there in the midst of people just to relax herself.
"Valerie."
She could hear her name being called clearly.
"Valerie."
She heard it again, this time she shut her eyes tighter.
"Valerie!"
She opened her eyes and smiled when she looked up and saw Nick standing in front of her, his hand gripping her arm, "Come on." He said beginning to pull her out of the crowd.
She shook her head, "Fuck off!" She exclaimed pulling her arm away from him and allowing herself to get lost in the crowd again.
Nick tried his best to find her, shoving and pushing through the inebriated people.
Feeling helpless the dance floor began to disperse and someone on an intercom announced the beginning of their first race.
Aligned in order were a bunch of cars revving their engines.
Nick shook his head, it reminded him of 2 Fast 2 Furious.
"Valerie!" He shouted, suddenly someone tugged on his t-shirt and he turned to see Elena who was standing beside her date.
Elena was trying to catch her breath, "I saw her, she's in-"
Nick raised an eyebrow, "Where is she?" He asked her gripping her shoulders softly.
She coughed before pointing at a red Buggati Veyron that had just taken off driving behind two other racers.
-
Nick inhaled from his cigarette and stared at the black street beneath him, his black combat boots were all scuffed out and both his hands were bleeding from punching the brick wall he was leaning against.
"Elena told me you were back here."
He didn't even bother to look up, he knew Valerie's voice all to well.
Nick could hear the tiny rocks breaking underneath her shoes as she got closer to him, she hugged Nick tightly and but he didn't return the affection.
He stared down to see her hair but then scoffed and looked back up, he dropped the cigarette onto the floor and squished it with his boots.
Valerie was still hugging him, indulging in the scent of tobacco and sandalwood.
Nick chuckled sarcastically, "I can't do this." He told her to which she let go of him and pushed him back with all her strength.
"Can't do what?" She asked pushing a piece of her hair back.
Nick frowned and slowly shook his head he pointed at her and shrugged, "This shit, I can't deal with the unpredictability anymore."
In disbelief she crossed her arms over her chest, "Unpredictability?" She repeated him.
"You're fucking insane!" He shouted at her, "One moment you're laying in bed for days depressed as fuck and the next you're doing crazy shit and I'm sick of it."
She nodded and laughed a little too, "I heard what you said." She murmured, "I heard what you said about wishing I was normal." She concluded.
"And you Nick, you must have some huge ego to judge me when all you do is feel anger." She told him while trying to fight back tears, " I wish I would've been normal too, I could've had friends, my mom would've loved me, I could've have thousands of boyfriends, could've been happy with myself." She concluded trying her hardest not to cry.
Nick stayed silent and avoided any eye contact with her as she continued, "I'm dead inside and so are you I thought we connected, that we understood each other but I guess you don't feel the same."
Nick clenched his jaw, "Don't cry." He warned her but she laughed insanely instead.
Her big mouth spreading open for a show, "Fuck you." She hissed, "Fuck you, fuck you, fuck you!" She said grabbing onto her face with her hand, her mouth covered her eyes began to tear up and Nick felt like shit.
"You don't deserve to see me cry!" She yelled and turned around showing her back to him.
"Babe don't cry." He softly said placing a hand on her waist, she turned around and with a closed fist swung up at his face.
Shocked at herself when she felt their skin collide Valerie began to cry even harder shoving herself into his chest. She didn't like to hit him, she hated that she did that.
Hugging her tightly Nick frowned, "I'm sorry baby, I'm sorry." He apologized while stroking her hair with his hand and then kissing the top of her head, "I know, it won't always be okay but as long as I'm here you'll be safe."
She didn't need to say a word to know she regretted her action.
She gently let go of him and he did the same, wiping a tear away she laughed, "Let's go have fun one last time?"
Nick couldn't help but smile back at her in agreement.
