Chapter 31

Beep

Beep

Beep

Beep

Blackness, all I can see is blackness.

I can hear the beeping of the heart monitor, I can't make out where I am and who I'm with.

I try and open my eyes, I try and move my arms, move my fingers. Nothing works.

I hear a voice, someone entering the room.

"How's she doing?" The voice asks

"She hasn't woken up yet. Is she gonna make it?" I hear a female voice ask, I recognize the voice. I haven't heard that voice in a long time. My mother.

"She should awaken soon, but the coma is keeping her under wraps so it's not guaranteed she will survive." the man says

I try my hardest to open my eyes, to make a sound to say I'm going to make it but I give up with not even a budge of the wrist.

I hear a sob. I assume the man is my doctor.

I hear him leave and the door closes.

My bed suddenly jerks. I feel a touch, a squeeze on my hand.

The women continues to cry

"Carlie, dear I'm so sorry! Please don't leave, I love you honey, just please I want you to know that I love you, I care about you. I'm sorry I wasn't there for you baby please-"

"Honey that's enough-" a man interrupts, my father.

"NO! Robert it isn't! We let her go Robert we let her leave! She was too young to leave and we let her go!" She protests

"Juliana, lets step into the hall." he tries to sooth her

The door closes as I hear her weep.

I try and wake up, I want to talk to her. But I do the exact opposite. My hearing goes and I'm left in the pitch black.






Beep after beep, whisper after whisper I come back to my senses, I can't really catch the words being said but I can tell there are people in the room.

I open my eyes, finally, I can see.

I'm in a room that's fairly large, a few machines I'm hooked up too. An IV in my arm, my heart monitor sounds off making a loud beeping sound.

My right hip aches, I lift up the sheet and look at the gauze wrapped around my torso.

I look up and notice Kelsey, she stands up.

I smirk.

She smiles back and opens her mouth to speak but the curtain swings open and a nurse jumps

"Oh! Oh my DR. CAYLEN!" she calls before walking in and shutting the machine off.

The doctor shows in the doorway and I look to him with an expression to say 'did you think I was gonna die?'

He walks in

"How are you doing Ms.?" he asks me

I nod
"I'm-" I clear my throat

"I'm well. how long have I been... out?" I ask

"6 days." he replies, I'm relieved.

"What happened?" I add

"Well, you had a hip replacement, your right hip was shattered in the shooting." he replies again, I'm immediately brought back to what happened.

I have tons of questions but I save them to ask Kelsey when we're alone.

"Where's my parents?" I shake

"They're sleeping, do you want them?" he points to the entrance

"Oh no, let them rest." I shake my head.

"Anything you need?" the nurse asks

I shake my head again and thy both leave

I turn to Kelsey.

"Where's...." I can't make the words out of my mouth

"David?" she speaks, I nod

"He is in jail. For a long- long time." she smirks

I'm relieved

"What about Renn?"

"Oh, he is okay. He was beaten pretty bad so he's still under medical care but he's okay- Carlie." she says, changing the subject. I look at her

"Thank you. You saved my life ya know." she adds

"No I didn't-"

"He would've shot me in my heart." she interrupts once more

It gets silent

"You're welcome." I say after a few minutes.

She smiles and leaves





A few days later I'm able to walk with crutches, I'm not able to leave the hospital yet. Everyone thinks it's safer for me to be under medical care until David is sent away to a different state far from me.

I walk to Renn's, but a name catches my eye, I peek around the curtain and find the girl who David stabbed.

I walk into the room, slowly. I close the curtain

She opens her eyes, shocked to find me.

"You're alive?" she asks. I nod

"Thank you for helping me. I was on deaths bed." she whispers

I want to know more about her, who she is, how long she's been under David's 'care' but I don't i do a single nod and straight smile before leaving. Making my way to see Renn
