I was standing outside of the cafeteria with my lunch in my hands looking around for a place to sit.

I felt an arm drape around my shoulder. "Where are we sitting today, bud?" Kane says.

"Yeah," Robin says to my left. "because you weren't here yesterday so we snuck in the library to eat."

I bit my lip, still looking around the cafeteria. Every table was occupied with people we didn't know too well. I saw the table I originally sat at and Brett was there and so was Sarah, but they're not sitting close like we all used to, and Amber, who I haven't spoken to in a while. I look farther back to the right of the cafeteria and I see a group of familiar people and a slow smile stretches on my face.

"C'mon guys." I start to walk to the table that Grant is sitting at and for some reason I get excited but yet nervous at the same time.

"Hey," I said when I made it to the table, "you mind if we sit with you?"

Grant turned around when he heard me speak. At the table it was, Felicity, Dave, and the girl with the overalls, who's name I still don't know yet, and a few other people.

He looked surprised, for some reason and gestured towards the table. "Oh, yeah, no problem."

I gave him a grateful smile and I sat down at the empty spot next to him while Kane sat next to overall girl and Robin next to him.

"So," Kane starts in a flirtatious voice to overall girl, "what's your name?"

Her cheeks turned red hot. "A-Amelia."

Robin smacked him in the arm. "Oh, leave the poor girl alone."

He ignored her. "Well, Amelia, I'm Kane and it's a pleasure to meet you."

She gave him a shy smile. "It's nice to meet you too."

"Julianne," I looked up from my food, coming back to reality and saw Felicity speaking to me. She had a sympathetic look on her face and I could tell what was about to come. "It's just I wanted to say I heard about what happened and I'm really sorry."

And I was right.

I shrugged. "It's fine, really, I don't even care anymore."

I said it but did I mean it? Only a little.

"In my opinion," Grant says, "I never really liked Sarah anyways and that Amber girl too but out of all of your friends I do like Robin."

Robin waved him off. "Oh, stop, I like me too."

Kane pushed her shoulder. "Well, what about me? I'm apart of her life now too."

Grant narrowed his eyes. "You're cool, so far."

I threw my hands up in exasperation. "What? So Grant's the man of approval now?"

He tilted his head. "Haven't I always been?"

Dave shook his head, letting out a breathless laugh. "I still can't believe this is happening. The most popular girl is sitting at our table. I mean, this is crazy."

I shrugged. "Well, you can stop treating me like I'm royalty now. We're friends."

Grant turned to me, giving me a look of surprise. "We are?"

I nodded. "Yes, we are."

"Great," Kane says, throwing his arm around Amelia. "I love having new friends."

________

"Are you ready to get started, friend?"

Grant appears out of nowhere and I refrain from screaming and just close my eyes putting my hand over my chest. "Damn, you scared me."

He lays his stuff down on my bed and sits down. "Well, your door was open."

I narrowed my eyes, sarcasm spilling from my mouth. "Oh, yeah, that's gives you a perfectly good reason to come and scare me half to death."

He raised his eyebrows with a proud look on his face, patting my cheek. "I think I'm rubbing off on you."

I slap his hand away. "Oh, stop it," and then I remembered what he said when he walked in. "hey, what's with the emphasis on friend? Do you not want to be my friend?"

He looked surprised that I said that. "No, I do. It's just, I'm surprised you want to be my friend."

I frowned. "Why?"

He fidgeted. "Because, you're you and I'm me. What else is there to explain?"

I shook my head. "That doesn't matter, Grant. You're a good person."

He looked down. "But-but isn't it weird hanging out with someone that's not in your social group?"

I put my hands on his shoulders, which made him look up, and I looked him dead in the eye and said firmly, "Listen to me, I'm human, you're human, we're both human and we're allowed to get along and be friends, you understand?"

He nods with a look in his eyes I've never seen before.

I let go of his shoulders and let out a breath. "Okay, good, now let's get started."

An hour later and Grant was out the door. During the tutoring, he reminded me that we had a test Friday so he made me do more problems than he usually gives me. And honestly I can say I'm getting way better at this math thing and I'm confident for the test. In no time I wouldn't even be needing tutoring anymore.

For some reason, my heart sunk because if I didn't need tutoring anymore that meant not seeing Grant as much as I do. I don't know why I was so down about the thought of it. Maybe it's because I've gotten used to him, to his sarcastic and outspoken but yet shy at times personality.

Ever since he came to my house yesterday to check on me I would find myself randomly thinking about him. Like he would randomly pop into my head or something small would remind me of him and it's strange and I don't know how to stop it like, right now. Ugh, this is strange.

I run my hand over my face and fall back on my bed. I heard footsteps coming up the stairs and could tell it was my dad from how heavy they were.

He lightly knocks on my door and I mumble a, "Come in."

"Hey, pumpkin," he says. "I was just seeing if you were here."

I stay laying down, facing the ceiling. "Well, here I am."

I feel the bed dip down and then his hand on my forehead. "What's wrong? Are you sick?"

"No..." I answer and then say softly, "Dad, you know me and Brett broke up?"

"Really?" he says, surprise lacing his voice. "Why?"

I slowly sit up and look at him with sad eyes. "He...he cheated on me."

His eyes widened and his mouth drops a little. He pulls me close to him, rubbing my back soothingly. "That son of a bitch. Do I need to shoot him? I still have my shotgun from my hunting days. How dare he hurt my baby girl."

I smile to myself and squeeze him tighter. "No, dad, it's fine. Wouldn't want you going to prison or anything."

"It'll be worth it."

I pull away. "But guess who it was with?"

"Oh god, who?"

I sigh. "Sarah."

His eyes widened again. "Sarah, your best friend Sarah?"

"Ex-bestfriend." I growl.

He puts his hands up. "Yeah, sorry."

I let out a breath. "It's fine, I've just had a really stressful weekend."

He pulls me to him again, rubbing my head. "It's okay, sweetheart, I get it. Let me give you some advice. You know, I was cheated on once too. Yep, by this girl named Tracey. I was so heartbroken because I thought she was the love of my life. And she cheated on me with her guy best friend. I always knew they were more than friends. But now, I'm glad she did because then I wouldn't be with your mother."

"Is this story going anywhere?" I mumble.

"Yes, anyways, my point is that maybe Brett wasn't the one for you. Maybe there is someone better out there for you. Someone that will make you happier than Brett ever did."

I closed my eyes, hugging him tighter. "Thank you, dad."

"You're welcome."
