Colton

Savannah leans against the car door with her eyes closed. She seems to be sleeping, but suddenly, she opens her eyes. "Where's Brandon?" She whispers. Her dark brown eyes meet mine. "With Rosie," I whisper back. The look on her face tells me she's not pleased. She glances over her shoulder at May. Who happened to fall asleep on the way home. Savannah sighed, sitting right in the passenger seat. She rubs her face with her hands. I couldn't help but notice something red on her fingers as she pulled them away from her face.

"What is that?" I ask, grabbing her hand without thinking about it. It was cold against my warm skin. I hear her breath slowly. Her hand slightly twitches in mine. I examined her finger to see that it was painted. "I spray painted a masterpiece. I've gotta say I'm pretty proud of myself." She grins. She softly pulls her hand out of mine and looks at her finger. "But that's our little secret. Don't tell Brandon." She whispers. For some strange reason, keeping a secret between us made me happy. She smiles at me and then looks out the passenger window.

"Are you hungry?" I ask, suddenly thinking about how hungry I am. "Yes. I could eat a whole cow right now." She exclaimed. I chuckle at her, which causes her to look at me. "What do you have in mind?" She asks. I shrug my shoulders. I didn't care what we ate as long as we were eating. "Dairy Queen?" She suggests. I nod in agreement. Savannah leans forward, turning on the radio. She hums the tunes softly to herself. How could Reed be so stupid? It's like he didn't realize how great this girl was. I know this is terrible to say, but I felt a little happy when she snapped at him. She looked so small and fragile compared to him, but her attitude said otherwise.

"Can I ask you something?" Savannah suddenly asks. I shrug my shoulders. "Depends on what it is," I reply. She looks at me with a puzzled look on her face. "You said your mom didn't want you around a few weeks ago. Why?" She asks. Her question took me back. I didn't expect her to remember what I said when I was drunk. Let alone something like that. I must have taken too long to answer because she shakes her head. "Never mind. Forget that I even asked." She said.

I loosen my grip on the steering wheel, not noticing how hard I have been holding onto it until now. "Uh, well, ever since I could remember, my mother has always wanted the most expensive things. She was okay with what my father had to offer for a while, and we were a happy family. Slowly, she wanted more, but my father was not enough for her anymore. So she left him and took me with her." I explain. Savannah watches me intently. "By this point, she was with this man named Jordan. He's a wealthy guy with lots of money to blow. Things were fine at first, but soon, I became a problem in their eyes. Especially my mother's because I was still my father's son. She couldn't move on with her life when she had an ugly reminder." I said. Savannah shakes her head in distaste. "She meant you, didn't she?" She asks. I nod slowly.

I just wanted to stop there, but I couldn't. I felt like I owed it to Savannah; she deserved to know. "So she booted me off to my father. Who, by this point, was gambling every weekend and was getting drunk during the week. He would always sell my shit for more money. Eventually, I got tired of it. So he kicked me out, and that's when your parents took me in." I say.

Savannah stays quiet like she is deep in thought. "So, now that I've told you my story. You must tell me how you ended up with someone like Reed." I say. Savannah chuckles at me. "I don't think that's your story. Part of it, but not all of it. I know there's more to you than that." She said. I pulled into the DQ drive-through and ordered our food: chicken strip baskets and two sodas. After paying for our food, I head back home. "So, you never did answer me," I say.

Savannah takes a bite of her fry and shrugs. "I dunno. We hit it off right away. He was an excellent friend, and eventually, the feelings developed into something else. I used to like the person I was around him. He seems like a different person now. He's not so charming." She admits in a low voice. Like it was something she didn't want to say out loud. She chuckles dryly.

"Take today, for example," she begins. We were supposed to hang out after school. Then, for some vague reason, he changed it to later on in the evening." She rolls her eyes. "Which is fine, but he canceled our plans, saying he would be busy with his parents. And where do I find him? At Blake's party." She huffs.

I glance at her to see her eyebrows scrunched together and a pout on her lips. "Okay, so topic changer, why did May get so drunk?" I ask. Savannah shrugs her shoulders. Even though the look on her face told me otherwise. "May would kill me if I told you," Savannah whispered. I park my car in the driveway. "You get the food. I'll get May." I tell her. Savannah nods and climbs out. I walk to the back seat, getting May out of the back. Savannah holds the front door for me and then closes it behind me. "What's going on?" Brandon asks. Savannah shoots him a dirty look and leads the way upstairs. "What did I do to deserve that?" He calls after her. His brown eyes meet mine. He wanted me to tell him, but I didn't even know.

Savannah mumbled under their breath as she continued up the steps, but I couldn't hear her. She opens her bedroom door, flipping the light switch on. "Just set her on the bed," She instructs me. I walked to the edge of the bed, setting her down as carefully as I could. Savannah suddenly appears beside me. A small fuzzy blanket in her hands. Her arm brushes against mine as she covers May up. I watch her as she helps make her friend more comfortable. She pulls off May's shoes, setting them on the floor beside the foot of the bed. I couldn't help but admire how beautiful she looked right now. "Does she normally drink this much?" I find myself asking. Savannah takes in a sharp breath and shakes her head. She steps away from May. "No, but I think she'll be okay." She replies.

She steps away from the bed and grabs our food. "I would ask your room or mine, but mine is already occupied." She grins. I find myself chuckling. "We can't go to mine either," I reply. "Why?" She cocks her head to the left. Her eyes search mine. "I don't want your brother to get upset," I whisper. "He told you to stay away from me, didn't he?" Savannah asks. I wanted to deny it, but her look told me not to. Brandon warned me that his little sister was off-limits. No ifs or buts about it. He didn't want someone with a reputation like mine to be with his sister.

"A long time ago," I admit. She nods thoughtfully. "And you listened." She stays. Again, I nod. I didn't want to lose my friendship with Brandon. He's like a brother to me. Savannah sighs deeply. "We could've been great friends." She whispers. I could see a glint of mischief in her eyes. "What are we now?" I ask. She shrugs her shoulders, stepping out of her room. "I wish I knew." She breaths out.
