Chapter 37
“Bella? Bella, love, can you hear me?”
The words slowly entered my mind, slow motion. It was like I had water in my ears.
“I think Amanda’s power is still effective, Edward.”
“When does it stop? I… I need her.”
“As far as I know, Amanda can make one pass out, for as long as she wishes, when she first uses her gift on them.”
Amanda? Who is Amanda? I blinked a few times. The scene in front of me was remembered all too well.
The ceiling and lights I looked up to after first becoming a vampire.
“Edward?” I whispered, reaching a hand out.
“She is to feel disoriented. It’s like she’s human for about an hour.” Carlisle chuckled.
Edward’s arms were around me before I could recognize him.
“What happened?” I asked, rubbing my eyes.
“You’re fine, everyone is fine, Bella…” Edward soothed.
Everyone?
Nessie?
Jacob?
Everything flooded back to me, and I gasped, standing up. “Where’s Nessie?”
“Mom?”
I looked towards the doorway, and my daughter stood there, nervously.
I was at her side in an instant, my arms around her. “I’m so glad you’re okay…”
The smile was evident in her voice. “Same for you.”
I looked back at Edward. “What happened?”
He sighed. “You passed out, because of Amanda, when Aro lunged at Nessie.”
I felt Nessie shudder.
“We took that as war, when Aro did that.” Carlisle added.
I looked frantically around.
“Aro called a truce, after a while…” Nessie whispered.
I sighed in relief. “Is anyone hurt?” I asked.
“Yeah…” Ness said sadly.
My eyebrows raised, and I looked at my daughter. “Who!?”
“Jacob….” Her eyes started to water.
After calling Billy and getting permission to ignore the treaty so I could see Jacob, I ran to his house.
“Thanks, Billy.” I said, coming in his house.
I turned the corner into Jake’s room and looked concerned at him. “Jake…” I whispered.
“Hey, Bells.” He said weakly, trying to sit up.
“No, Jake, stay down.” I said, and kneeled beside his bed.
Jacob sighed. “I can’t believe Ness agreed to that bloodsucker!” He muttered.
I looked confused. “What? Agreed to what?” I asked.
He raised his eyebrows at me. “What Aro said. He said he’d only leave alone if your family promised to join him soon.”
“But then Carlisle would’ve had to agree, right?” I can’t believe this.
“He asked Nessie. She agreed.” His voice sounded so angry.
“But what happened to you?”
“When she agreed I phased on Aro…” He admitted.
“What? You were there?”
“After a while the pack showed up, just in case.”
I looked down.
“Bells you can talk it out with Aro… right?”
I shrugged. “I don’t know.” My life started to slow motion around me.
“Bella it’ll be okay… It always is.” He tried to reassure me.
“No. We just say they are.”
And it’s true. We only say it turned out okay, even though our whole lives we think about how we could have done it different, to change the results.
How I wish I would have acted different...
