Chapter Forty-Six…

A wisp of hair, so fast I couldn’t even see its colour, was all that I caught sight of before the door had been slammed again.

My heart was beating out of my chest, and despite my wished, I could feel the tears accumulating in my eyes at the endless horrific possibilities forming in my mind. My breathing was fast, and it had nothing to do with the proximity at which Jord was still stood.

I let my head slump forward into his chest. “What, do we do now?” I choked out, my mind still working overtime.

Jord shook his head against me. “I don’t know.” He admitted, his voice weary and trying to contain his upset. He took a step away from me, reluctantly. “In case they come back again, or someone else.” He explained.

I put my hands on the desk as a support, but still let my head fall forward so that my hair was draped around my face. “We don’t even know who it was.” I muttered, my voice cracking. “We don’t even know who we’re trying to persuade not to say anything.”

I heard Jord’s back hit the wall and I saw, from where I was looking at the ground, when he slid down it to the floor. Bending his knees and placing his elbows on them, he ran a hand through his hair. “I can’t believe it.” Was barely uttered from his mouth, but I could see the stress and worry that was pounding through his veins.

Our faces were both pale and I knew we’d entered the stage of shock. This wasn’t something that could easily be accepted.

We’d finally given in what we’d tried so hard to resist. Keeping ourselves unhappy for several months before hand had been for a reason, this reason in particular. Fate must hate us, because ruining something that was all seeming so great is really harsh, especially considering all the other rubbish that seems to always be going on in my life.

I felt a tear slip from my eye.

This was definitely it for us now. We’d felt almost invincible when we’d given in and agreed to just keep it secret. The idea that we’d be caught seemed foolish when we knew we could hide it so well. It had been a nightmare that wouldn’t come true.

Only now, it had.

This would be the final straw. This had brought back the real reality that we could be caught, that what we were doing was illegal, punishable by law. We’d both have ruined our job prospects if this was put out into the open, so it obviously wasn’t worth the risk.

In hindsight, this had been a disastrous idea.

The door opened, but I didn’t bother to look up. I vaguely saw Jord’s head twist to the side and even more of a grimace twist on his lips when he recognised the intruder. Our position wasn’t incriminating at the moment exactly, but it was when taking into consideration the number of rumours flying about. Even being in a classroom alone with Jord was pushing it.

“Trouble in paradise?” A voice I distinguished as Matt’s inquired.

I looked up slightly, fully aware that my eyes would be red and puffy from where several more tears had made their way down my face, and glared at him. That wiped the full blown smirk off his face and he glanced between the two of us worriedly, he knew there was something seriously wrong now.

“What’s happened?” Matt demanded, staying where he was stood close to the door and scrutinising us both intently.

I just shook my head, not bringing myself to say the words. When I glanced at Jord, he wasn’t even bothering to do that, he was just glaring at the floor, eyes unfocused.

Matt got really worried then and came over to me, daring to approach me when I was in such an obviously foul mood. He stood in front of me, cutting off my vision of Jord, and placing his hands on my shoulders. “Jessica,” he started sternly. “Tell me what’s happened.”

“We. Got. Caught.” I hissed, my voice, which was trying to maintain the bitter quality, breaking on the last word. “Happy now?”

I dropped my head again and stared at my feet, which had stopped the their normal absentminded swinging, and refusing to raise my head again.

Matt had staggered backwards, as if he’d been struck physically, and I could imagine the incredulous look on his face. “How the hell did you manage that?” He demanded, his voice sounding angry, but his face lost to my curtain of hair.

“It’s none of your fucking business Matt.” Jord snapped, his voice dark and cold as, for the first time in front of me, he swore.

That really brought home just how serious this was. Jord hadn’t lost his temper exactly, he was trying to remain composed, as long as everyone was leaving him alone. But, when Matt had butted in, he’d been straight down his throat angrily.

After a couple of seconds time to calm down again, Jord apologised sincerely. “Sorry.” He muttered to Matt. “I’m just worked up.”

Matt nodded, trying to understand and not holding it against him. “It’s fine.” Matt dismissed his brother. “Who was it?”

“We don’t know.” I answered for Jord this time, grimacing as I said the words. Not knowing was worse than being informed, even with something this bad. At least if I knew who it was, if it was someone I knew, a random student, or even teacher, who’d happened to walk in at the wrong moment, we’d be able to plan something. But being clueless, that left us at a loss of what to do.

“Don’t know?” Matt questioned, his voice back to the slightly higher pitched, incredulous tone.

I already knew what was going to happen before it did as Jord barked out another sharp reply. “That’s what she said.”

He didn’t bother apologising this time though, knowing Matt should have learnt his lesson after the first time. “How did you not know who it was?” Matt carried on querying, despite the warning in Jord’s tone. “Were you too busy having sex on the desk to notice someone in the doorway?” I knew Matt was getting just as riled up as we were now and it was showing by his lack of empathy.

Jord was on his feet in an instant, his hand encasing the front of Matt’s shirt in a fist. “This isn’t something to joke about.”

His voice was low and threatening as he kept his hold on Matt’s t-shirt, his eyes dark and threatening. He was annoyed we’d been caught and he was angry Matt thought we’d been that careless.

“I’m not stupid, Matt, I would never do that at school.”

“Well then was the hell were you doing?” Matt still refused to give in, despite the position he was in, Jord looking very much like he needed to hit something.

“What do you think I was doing?” Jord shouted, his voice having risen below the calm and deadly to the livid and shouting level now. “I was comforting her because we’re surrounded by thousands of gossiping bitches, her parents are in jail and her dad kidnapped her days ago!”

Matt’s face softened slightly, but then returned to mad with vengeance. “Well a school classroom with the door open obviously wasn’t the place to do it.” He retorted, his hands finding Jord’s and removing them from his shirt.

“You don’t understand!” Jord yelled, his fist clenching at his side now it had nothing to hold onto. “Jess was upset, I wasn’t going to stand there and do nothing about it.”

“Yeah, well guess what? Now she’s even more upset because you were careless and you got caught.”

It all happened so fast that I barely caught Jord’s movement as his fist collided with Matt’s face.

Matt staggered backwards as he felt the full impact of Jord’s punch from such a short distance. He wasted no time in reacting though and sent a back a returning blow that got Jord straight in the mouth.

I could already see the blood trickling from Jord’s mouth and whilst I was sat, frozen in shock and terror, more blows were being exchanged. Some missing and some hitting.

When I finally broke from my stupor, I jumped up, not wanting to get too close, but needing to stop them. “Stop it!” I cried, trying to not to attract any attention from elsewhere, but needing to get through to them.

They were oblivious to my calls though and carried on punching, kicking and shoving. I watched in horror as Jord kneed Matt in the stomach, much like Zack had to him months ago. Matt bent over coughing, but didn’t take long to retaliate, kicking Jord in the shin and making him stumble backwards into the wall.

Matt wasted no time in pinning Jord against it, kneeing him in the stomach just like Jord had done to him. I felt the tears wash down my face as Jord’s face crumpled with obvious pain.

In a flash, Jord was the one pinning Matt with his back against the wall, his fist raised, ready to punch him right in the nose.

Now they in a much more stable position and less likely to come colliding with me, I dared to go closer. I couldn’t let Jord hit Matt like that, at such a close proximity, he had a chance of doing some permanent damage to him.

“Jord stop.” I pleaded, but because I wasn’t stood close enough for him to see me, he paid no notice, too intent on his fist, about to collide with Matt’s face.

Stop it!” This time, I pulled out all the stops, my voice was as loud as it would go and I was past caring about the consequences. I just needed him to stop. Tears were flowing in a constant stream down my face, as a selection of emotions which had built up over the past week finally spilled over the edge. I didn’t want Jord to end up doing something he’d regret and I didn’t want Matt to get hurt.

I saw Jord visibly flinch, but his gaze didn’t waver from Matt’s equally furious face.

Then, the door burst open and Mrs. Danks herself walked in, her face quickly contorting with shock and disgust.
