                                                                                    ***

-"Liraz?" The man called with a monotone voice. "Your food is getting cold. Eat"

-"The food's horrible" She spat, sipping on water.

-"Then we have a chef to fire" Adam informed, a glass of wine in his hand.

-"No need to fire anyone, Adam. The food is great, isn't it, Ace?" Trish smiled, looking at Ace

-"Yes" Ace answered shortly

-"I'm allergic to chicken" The redhead spoke and Adam sighed

-"I didn't know"

-"Because you are an awful father" She raised her eyebrows

-"Watch it, young lady" He seethed, his jaw clenching

-"Or what?" She let out an audacious laugh.

-"Challenging me brings you joy, doesn't it?" The man adjusted his grey suit and glared at his daughter.

-"That's what my tattoos are for" She said nonchalantly and her father snapped

-"Excuse me!" He yelled and she gave him a sugary smile before turning around and pointing to the ink on the back of her neck. She chose to tie her hair in a top bun for this exact reason, she smirked when her father's eyes widened in disbelief.

-"I still got two more" She chirped. "Only Ace can see those..If you know what I mean" She wiggled her eyebrows making Ace choke on his food.

-"I swear, sir, we haven't.. I never did, we never ever went there.. I would never.. Well only if she wants me to, I mean-" Ace stuttered awkwardly and Trish covered her face in embarassement.

-"Okay" Trish broke the tension between the father and his daughter. "Ace, would you like to tell us how you two met?"

The boy was too busy avoiding the Mirzach fire that he kept his head down, answering with only a short "yes" or "no". Since Liraz never talked about her father, he had no idea of what to do or how to act. He was so nervous about meeting his girlfriend's father, and only now he realized that his edginess was well-placed.

-"Ace?" Trish called again and his head snapped to her direction. "So?"

-"The food in great, yes" He grinned, before looking down at his plate.

-"No, I meant how did you and Liraz met?" The beautiful redhead laughed, shaking her head

-"I already told you how" He looked at Liraz. Her eyes were narrowed, rigid, cold. In that moment he knew she was already beyond mad.

-"But Adam would like to hear the story"

-"We met in school"

-"Yes, and how did you ask her out?" Trish wiggled her eyebrows. "It was the most romantic thing I've ever heard, you'll love it" She whispered but the carelessness never left Adam's face.

-"It was on Christmas, we were waiting for the fireworks to erupt and I noticed she was gone, so I followed her. At first she didn't-"

-"What are your plans for the future?" Adam caught off, showing disinterest.

-"I am captain of the SHHS swim team, I am planning on going professional, I love to swim-"

-"And what are you planning on doing with your life after 30?" The old man rudely interrupted

-"I guess I will-"

-"You guess?" Adam frowned, making Ace shift uncomfortably in his seat.

-"I think, I don't know yet-"

-"I guess, I think, I don't know" Adam laughed bitterly. "Let me tell you something, son-"

-"Do not call him son" Liraz warned, tapping her black fingernails against the table.

-"You think you're still young, and you have a whole life to plan ahead, but, high school's almost over, your college years will fly faster than time, and if you are not sure of what you want to become in this exact moment, you're done. Let me ask you this, are your parents aware of your career choice?"

-"Yes, they always knew that-"

-"And they are encouraging you?" Adam interrupted again, eyebrows raised in surprise

-"Yes, they are okay with-"

-"This is laughable. What did you say your last name was, again?"

-"It's Owens"

-"As in Grayson Owens, the doctor?" Ace only nodded and Adam's eyes gleamed in mischief before he looked at Liraz. "Dating below your social status, classic"

-"I am my mother's daughter after all" She smirked and the colors drained from her father's face. "Isn't that so, Ottets?"

-" I always tell you-"

-"I frankly do not care what you tell me" She interrupted, bitterness dripping from her voice

-"We don't need to wave our dirty laundry in front of strangers and-"

-"The only stranger in this house is you" Ace looked down, trying to block this conversation. He wished he was sitting next to Liraz, he wished he could hold her hand and try to calm her, but instead he had to watch her father get the best of her while he was there, hands tied.

-"You ungrateful little-"

-"Watch it, Ottets. You do not wanna piss me off, I've got a temper of a Vasiliev, and you have proven  to be weak against this name!" She slammed her hands against the table before pointing an accusing finger at her father

-"Liraz, let's not-" Ace tried to calm her down but she only ignored him. Her fiery eyes pierced her father's skin with extreme anger and tore apart his soul, if only looks could kill.

-"Don't you dare bring your mother's name into-"

-"Watch me, Adam!" In her intense fury, she screamed with her whole body. Her fists clenched with blanched knuckles and the nails digging deeply into the palms of her hand left a red mark. Her father's eyes went wide with horror, his mouth rigid and open. He never imagined Liraz calling him by his name. Surely, he hated when she called him ottets, but at least, it was her way of calling him a father, and now she didn't even grace him with such name, he wasn't ottets anymore, he was Adam, just Adam.

-"I am your father, have some respect-"

-"Respect is earned" Her eyes flickered for a second but the pure anger flared and Ace couldn't stay away from her. He wanted to help her.

-"For heaven's sake, stop interrupting me Liraz" He sighed, rubbing his temples

-"Oh, now you know what Ace felt when you were interrupting him!" She laughed madly. "I am sick of hearing your voice!" She leaned in and snatched the glass of wine from Trish's hands and drank it in one swift gulp.

-"My voice? Is that all?" He shook his head, taking off his tie and unbuttoning his blazer. "I can't stand to look at you, you're the living proof of my failures, my sorrow and my-"

-"Enough!" One word. That's all it took to put out the fire that kept building up in the room. "This dinner's over." Ace's voice was now nothing but a whisper. Trish walked to Liraz and they both climbed the stairs to her room.

The fight had ebbed to nothingness, now the silence was as pure as the winter outside. When his ears became more accustomed to the lack of sound, Ace thought he could hear the distant voice of Liraz screaming upstairs.

There was no sound in the house, yet everyone was moving, moving and not talking. Adam walked back and forth by the large window, not bothering to look at the moon who shone bright. The maids were now cleaning the table, somehow they are now pressing urgent like they wanted to get away from the tension. Ace sat, unable to relax, foot tapping up and down in eager movements.

-"What the hell is wrong with you?" Ace managed to say quietly. The man turned to look at him, as coldly as possible and Ace remembered all those times Liraz refused to sit in her house, all those times she stayed late in Peach Pit, drove aimlessly the whole night, spent days sleeping in her friends house only to avoid seeing her father. She hated the way he looked at her, and Ace hated the way she felt. "How do you sleep at night?"

-"In silk sheets, rolling in money" Adam said.

-"Are you kidding- Man, when Lira spoke so low of you, I actually thought it was just in her head. I couldn't believe that a father could be so obnoxious but guess she was right"

-"I will not sit here and be insulted in my own house"

-"Oh but you will! Stop it, okay? Just stop! Why did you even invite me to this dinner? So you could just use me to get the best of her? Well congratulations, great job, now you managed to piss three people at once, great job. Why would you bother to plan a dinner if you're gonna serve something Lira is allergic to, talk about things that piss her off, and not show the slightest interest in her first relationship? Yes, your daughter –one of the most beautiful girls of our high school– had never dated in her entire life, and wonder why? Because the first man she ever loved abandoned her the second he had a chance to! She's so afraid of being hurt that she became so cold and shallow, she just isolated herself and put on a mask until she finally became the girl she is now, now I don't know about you, but I love her smile! There's something about the way she smiles, the way her eyes twinkle and the way she throws her head back and claps her hands! She has the kind of smile that makes you grateful to be alive. What are you grateful for, Mr. Mirzach? Do you have any idea how many times she told me she had lost both parents when only her mother died? How many times she wished it was you in that grave instead of her mother? Now take a seat and let that sink in! What would you say if you meet Vlada again? What would be your excuse? Work, grief, guilt? You already lost a part of you, you don't wanna lose the one that's left. If you could just take time to look at her in the eyes and tell her how you feel instead of blaming her for your own failures, you'd both be in a better place right now. It's not her fault that Vlada's dead, it's not her fault that you cheated, it's not her fault that guilt is eating its way through whatever's left of the man she knew. It was father, then ottets, and now you're Adam, just Adam to her. Is that how you wanna live your life? Alone in silk sheets and money? Do you even bother to ask yourself what's it like to hug your daughter and put a smile on her face, are you ever curious of what she'd like to become, places she'd like to see, dreams she'd want to realize? Now before you think what's this stupid little boy standing in front of you knows about life, let me tell you: Nothing! I know nothing, I've seen no misery and known no tragedy, I'm young and stupid and I'm too nerdy to be noticed but Lira did, she noticed me and I've got to tell you that girl upstairs is so full of love, she's so full of love and that her intensity scares her so much she tries to hide it, but I can see through all that bullshit. I love her, okay? I love your daughter and I don't give a damn if you think I'm not good enough for her because I am where I am because I'm good enough for her. And I will love her until she loves herself. I am not the richest, I am not the most attractive and certainly not the most popular but I love. I got nothing but love to give. What do you have?"

***

Lydia knocked gently on the door; It sounded as if she was knocking on the door to a room full of sleeping wolves. She wasn't sure of what to say or why she was here, but she just found herself by Killian's room, waiting for him.

-"Killian" She called. The approaching footsteps had the sound of someone who had not learnt to walk quietly and instead relied on the verges to muffle their steps. Each footfall was chaotically spaced from the last, no rhythm at all. Whoever it was lacked confidence, or was likely scared.

             It wasn't Killian.

-"Killian, you okay in there?" She asked softly through the door. Her voice was as sweet as honey, yet mixed with caution. "Your nana let me in" She whispered and heard someone walking to the door. This times it was steady, confident steps. "Can I come in?" She put her hand on the door knob but something stopped her. A thud and a crash, as if something heavy had been hurled at the door.

-"Lydie, now is not a good time" Was all that Killian said. She rested her head on the door, because she knew he was right there, standing against the door.

-"Let me in, Killian" Her voice was melodious and enchanting. "I know there's something wrong, let me in, we could lay in bed and stare at the ceiling, or I'll wait here until you're ready and we could go to the beach and you could tell me what's on your mind"

-"I'm fine, Lydia. I'll call you later and-"

-"Killian Sanders, don't you lie to me" She cut off and he didn't need to open the door to know she was frowning, hands on her hips. There was a long moment of silence before she heard a frail noise in the room, a frowned etched on her face but was quickly gone when the door was open. She immediately walked in.

-"Hi" He mumbled

-"Hey" She rubbed her hands together

-"Hi" He sighed when he realized he said it twice. "So?"

-"I don't know, Killian, you tell me. You were so jumpy and upset this morning. What's going on?" She had worry all over her face. He looked tired. She reached for his hand. He took a step back

-"It's nothing, Lydia. Can we just talk about this later, now is really not a good time-"

-"I knew it!" She yelled. "Oh my god, I am such an idiot" She rubbed her temples and started pacing. "I mean, I shouldn't have, but I did, and now you're avoiding me. That's why you couldn't look at me this morning, right?"

-"What are you talking about?" He eyes weirdly, wearing a puzzled expression

-"I don't know how to talk about this! It was easy with Adrian, we knew each other, we understood each other, no words were needed, but I only had that special connection with my Adrian- Oh goodness, I'm making this worse!" She shook her head and let out a frustrated groan

-"What? Lydia, please, go home, we'll talk about this later" He begged and only then, she heard a noise coming from the bathroom and her eyes shot open.

-"Oh my god!" She yelled before slapping her hands over her mouth. "That's why you were so confused, that's why you stepped back, that's why-" She lowered her voice as if afraid the walls could hear. "Oh my god, there's a girl in your bathroom and I- I cannot believe myself, how selfish am I? Your kiss was the forbidden cookie jar. I wasn't supposed to reach in, but I
did, and now- Oh dear god, I shouldn't have, I am so ashamed of myself, I can't-"

The bathroom door finally creaked open and Lydia's head snapped to its direction.

-"Oh my god!"

-"Lydia, can you leave now? Please!" He pleaded but her feet were glued to the floor, she couldn't move, her eyes never left the person in front of her. "Lydia!" He yelled but she just took a step forward and then backed away.

Tyler glanced at her before walking to the bed, taking his jacket and car keys. In that mere second that their eyes locked, she saw his eyes holding the darkness resembling the cold night outside these walls, she was shocked to find nothing inside. Hope seemed galaxies away.

He looked vulnerable, and he hated it. His hair was a complete mess, bloodshot eyes, redness was contouring his nose and he walked like the world was weighing on his shoulder. He wanted to get out of Lydia's sight as fast as he could, he hated the look on her face, he hated when people saw his weaknesses. He couldn't stay in that room. Lydia's heart ached when she saw the familiar bruises on his face.

-"Tyler, you can't drive like this!" Killian called but his friend was too proud to listen

-"I'm leaving" Tyler said, his voice seemed caught in his throat.

-"No, Ty." Lydia said softly, walking to him.

There was something about the way she called him Ty that made him stop on his tracks. His body froze in place and he remembered when Sky called him by that. He closed his eyes, refusing to look at the girl standing right in front of him. A tear escaped his bloodshot eyes, he clenched his jaw, slapping away her hand when she tried to help him.

-"Killian, go grab something to eat, I'll clean up his cuts. He's spending the night here" Lydia said and Killian left in a hurry. She went to the bathroom and came back with a first aid kit. "You need to stop picking fights in the bar, Tyler"She held his face in her tiny hands and started examining his face. He tried to get away but she insisted. The fight wasn't as bad as usual, since all he had was a bloody lip and a superficial cut on his temples. Her hands immediately held his, she was examining his knuckles, but they were completely fine.

-"What is this?" She asked, anger filling her tone. He just shrugged, looking blankly at the wall. "You have no blood under your fingernails, no bruises on your knuckles and- Good god, you didn't even fight back, did you!" he threw her hands in the air, defeated. "What are you doing, Tyler? Why are you doing this!" She yelled, concerned, but he only sighed, as is he heard this speech over and over again. "You're hurting yourself"

-"I don't care" He mumbled and her eyes threatened to fall out, she couldn't believe what she heard. She just dampened cotton ball of hydrogen peroxide and slammed it harshly against the cut on Tyler's temples. He let out a grunt that she ignored, pressing the cotton ball harder until he cried out

-"That hurts!"

-"I know" She nodded, wiping the blood from his lip. "That's how it feels when you harm yourself. It's not the answer, Tyler. You pick up a fight and when a random drunk beats you, you don't even fight back, you just take all that beating without putting up a fight. Stop punishing yourself. Violence is not the answer. Maybe you don't care, but people around you do"

-"Why aren't you mad at me?" He dared to ask and she stopped for a moment to look in his eyes. There was sorrow swimming in them and she wanted to do something to help But she saw fierceness and pride in his eyes, and she knew that he would not accept any help.

-"Oh I am very mad at you, Tyler" She scolded him, anger filling her voice. "You don't attend your classes, you're skipping practice, you smell like alcohol and you look terrible from the lack of sleep. You don't hang out with your friends anymore, you get yourself in trouble and you hurt yourself. Bruises never look good on a quarterback"

At her words, his body completely shut down. His eyes bore into her and he opened his mouth to speak but snapped it shut. He could fine a million reasons why she would be mad at him, but what she said aren't one of them. He played her best friend, he got his brother killed, he betrayed her trust and played every one of her friends, he pretended to be their friend, and he was nothing but cruel to them but here she was worrying about his studies and his health.. He felt so small in front of her kindness, so repulsive and insignificant. How could someone possibly be so good hearted and kind towards him after all he did?

His eyes swelled and turned red. He was unable to speak, unable to breath, nothing. The world around him became a blur of color that melted to grey. The weight in his chest locked in his throats and he stood up abruptly and walked to the balcony. His hands balled up in fists and she could hear his teeth grazing from how much he was clenching his jaw, she walked to him hurriedly and tried to unclench his fists, but she failed, he was far too strong, and far too stiff to relax

-"Let it out!" She yelled, looking at him straight in the eyes. "It's okay t cry, Tyler, just let go, don't hurt yourself like this, don't hurt yourself!" She begged him again and again.

When he finally cried there was a rawness to it, like the pain was still an open wound. He clasped onto the balcony's door for support, and then his whole body started shaking. The sobs were stifled at first as he attempted to hide his pain, then –overcome by the wave of his emotions– he broke down entirely, all his defenses washed away in his tears. And when he at last turned his face to Lydia, he was a picture of loss and devastation. It was the face of one who had suffered before and didn't know if he could do it again. She just stood there, hugging herself, feeling sorry for him.

-"How could you worry about me when I was nothing but a monster to you and your friends! I hurt Sky, I betrayed your trust and you're standing here, feeling sorry for me! How could you do that?" His hands opened and closed, rhythmically clenching as if there could be some violent solution to his pain, if only he could find it. "Sky was right, I don't deserve forgiveness" He mumbled, violently wiping away his tears

-"Don't say that. Everybody deserves forgiveness, everybody should get a second chance! It may take time, maybe longer than you can imagine, but nobody can truly hold a grudge for too long, we move on, we forget, we start over and since we turned the page, we already forgave. I can't promise you that things will be back to normal, but it'll get better in time. Everybody will heal, but you can't expect people to forgive you if you can't forgive yourself. You're not a good guy, Tyler, but you're not a monster"

-"How can you say that?" He asked, wondering how much goodness this girl held inside her heart

-"Strange as it may sound, if you think of me as a monster, but I can love most passionately. I do not think of myself as evil" She smiled at him as he took time to listen to her words. "Christopher Pike, The Last Vampire" She giggled and his lips lifted upwards in a small smile. She held up her finger, silently telling Tyler to wait and left the room for a minute, then came back later with some towels in her hand. She walked passed the boy and put them in the bathroom. Then, she walked to Killian's closet. Tyler was watching her walk into the room like she owned it. A minute later she came carrying some clothes in her hands. She handed them to Tyler who was looking at her with suspicion. He headed back to

-"You know exactly where everything is. It's creepy" He mumbled, taking the clothes from her

-"Sweetheart, we're not best friends for nothing" She shrugged, pointing at the clothes she handed him. "I put a brand new pair of boxers in there, so don't worry" Tyler's eyes popped open and he shocked on his own words

-"We're friends for as long as I can remember and I never seen his underwear drawer"

-"You're not a pretty girl" She wiggled her eyebrows playfully

-"I'm a hot boy" He smirked, and she caught a glimpse of the boy she used to know, the boy who had no pain in his chest and no guilt on his mind.

-"He doesn't swing for the other team" She giggled

-"He can, I mean, he didn't kiss you back and-" He didn't have time finish before she jumped on him and put her hand on his mouth, a look of mild shock on her face and her cheeks flushed pink.

-"Tyler! Don't you dare!" Lydia whispered, taking her hand away. She stood soaking in Tyler's pleased laughter. "How did you know that?"

-"I have super powers" He wiggled his fingers at her in a weird enactment.

-"Stop it, you look ridiculous" She cringed her nose which only made him smirk

-"But seriously let me get this straight" He put the clothes on Killian's bed and scratched the back of his neck. "From all the words in the world, you chose 'Forbidden cookie jar' to compare a kiss? I mean- Wow, that was hilarious!" There was no use in fighting back the sickly smug on his face as it appeared wide and clear, making Lydia slap her hands on her ear, refusing to listen

-"Keep it down, somebody might hear you" She hissed in disbelief

-"I'm sorry, do you mean The Forbidden cookie Jar might hear me?" She walked to the bed and buried her head in a pillow and screamed out the frustration.

-"Can we pretend you didn't hear that conversation? Please?" She begged but there was only mischief in his eyes. He pretended to actually think about it before declining her request

-"Nope" He said, emphasizing the P.

-"You're the worst" She cried out and he nodded in agreement

-"Don't worry, I'm sure he would've kissed you back if he wasn't so-"

-"Tyler Hernandez, I am warning you!" She was practically fuming but he found her threats rather amusing, she was so tiny and adorable, she was Sweet Little Lydia.

-"No, I'm serious, the guy didn't get laid since like-" By the time he started talking, Lydia had already pressed her fingers against her ears and was singing

-"Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? SpongeBob Squarepants! Absorbent and yellow and porous is he! SpongeBob SquarePants! If nautical nonsense be-" Her voice was so loud and obnoxious that it made him stop

-"Okay, okay. Just stop, you're voice is horrible" He rubbed his forehead and she smiled proudly. "No, but I'm serious, the guy gets a boner every time you walk into the room" He shrugged. Lydia made a gagging sound before looking at Tyler, mortified. She was about to ask how does he know that, but decided against it. She got up, stomping her feet on the floor and snatched the clothes from his grip.

-"Give me back those clothes, I'm done being nice to you" She pouted but he refused to let go of the underwear

-"You've got to be kidding me" He laughed at her expression

-"I am glad my annoyance brings you joy, now give me those boxers!" She kept pulling and he pulled harder, enjoying her irritation. "Tyler, we're not going to talk about this!" She groaned and then the door burst open wide and Killian stood by the frame, his hands full of junk food bags.

-"Talk about what?" Killian's suspicion clearly showed on his face and the edges of his smile pulled down.

-"Kisses!"

-"Underwear!"

They blurted out the words at the same time, and Killian walked to his desk, freeing his hand from the bags. There was something puzzling in the way they were acting, enough for him to tip his head suspiciously on one side, and stare at them with bright eyes.

-"Why don't you take a quick shower so we could eat?" Killian asked his friend who snatched the underwear from Lydia's hand and raised an eyebrow. "And for you, I brought this" Killian smiled at Lydia, an Oreo pack in his hand. She threw her hands in the air to grab it but Tyler –having an athlete's reflex– had already taken hold of it. Lydia cried out, dropping her gaze to the pack in Tyler's hands. He ignored her complaints and, in no time, he opened it and he popped a cookie into his mouth, savoring the taste. Only then, he turned to look at Lydia, offering her some. He opened his mouth to talk, and in his arrogant triumph, he smirked.

-"Cookie?"
