Chapter 12 - Embers of Dawn

-+-

In the quiet of the early morning, Lydia was abruptly awakened by a firm shake on her shoulder. Groggy and disoriented, she blinked open her eyes to find Diana looming over her, urgency painted across her face. Lydia sat up, rubbing the sleep from her eyes, her mind racing to catch up with the situation.

"Lydia, something happened!" Diana exclaimed, her voice tinged with panic.

Confused and still half-asleep, Lydia managed to utter, "W-what happened?"

"The Gillis' home is on fire!" Diana's voice broke through the early morning silence like a clarion call. "We need all the help we can get!"

The gravity of Diana's words hit Lydia like a cold splash of water. She leaped out of bed, adrenaline coursing through her veins, and raced downstairs, Diana hot on her heels. In a flurry of motion, they donned their fall clothes, the urgency of the situation propelling them forward. Together, they dashed towards the Gillis home, hearts pounding and minds filled with concern.

As they neared the scene, the reality of the situation unfolded before Lydia's eyes. Flames engulfed the Gillis home, painting the night sky in shades of orange and red. Smoke billowed into the air, carried by the gentle breeze, a stark reminder of the destruction unfolding before them. Lydia scanned the crowd, searching for a familiar face amidst the chaos.

"Anne!" Lydia and Diana shouted in unison, their voices filled with relief as they spotted their friend. They rushed towards Anne, and the three girls embraced in a tight hug, a small island of comfort amid turmoil.

"Oh, I've missed you so much!" Anne's voice was muffled by the embrace, her words filled with a mixture of joy and sorrow.

Suddenly, the sound of shattering glass cut through the air as a window in the Gillis home succumbed to the heat. The girls turned towards the noise, witnessing the valiant efforts of the men as they positioned a ladder against the burning structure. A young boy bravely climbed, determined to battle the blaze.

Lydia's heart clenched as she watched the scene unfold, fear and concern etched into her features. "It's burning so fierce," Anne murmured, echoing Lydia's thoughts. "Is everyone out of the house?"

"Yeah. That's the Gillis family over there," Diana said, her gaze fixed on a group of figures huddled together in the distance. "You see Ruby?"

Lydia followed Diana's gaze, her eyes settling on Ruby Gillis and her family. They stood together, a tableau of despair against the backdrop of their burning home. The sight filled Lydia with a profound sense of helplessness, yet it also kindled a flame of determination within her.

As the chaos of the fire engulfed the Gillis home, a puzzling observation escaped Anne's lips, loud enough for those nearby to hear. "Why are the doors and windows open?" she mused aloud, her voice cutting through the tumultuous sounds of the emergency.

Lydia turned her attention to Anne, her brows knitted together in curiosity. She recalled a conversation where Anne had explained that fire thrived on oxygen, spreading more rapidly with ample supply. It was a critical piece of knowledge that suddenly seemed all too relevant.

"What?" Diana asked, her confusion apparent as she glanced from Lydia to Anne, trying to grasp the significance of the observation.

In that moment of distraction, the sound of the fire wagon arriving offered a brief respite from the growing dread. Yet, Lydia and Diana could only watch in stunned silence as Anne sprang into action, her determination palpable. Anne hurriedly gathered blankets, soaking them with water before strategically placing them around the house to stifle the fire's relentless advance.

"Anne!" Diana's voice rose in a mix of fear and admiration as she witnessed her friend's bold move.

Lydia's gaze followed Anne's every step, admiration mingled with fear for the danger that Anne was willingly confronting. Her heart skipped a beat when Anne disappeared into the smoke-filled house, an act of bravery that bordered on recklessness.

"No! Anne! Anne!" Diana's cries became a frantic litany, echoing Lydia's own terror. "Anne! Anne! Anne!"

Driven by a surge of determination and fear for her friend's safety, Lydia sprinted towards the inferno, Diana's calls fading behind her. "Lydia!" Diana's voice broke, laden with dread for both of her friends now risking their lives.

"Lydia!" The surprise in Gilbert's voice was unmistakable as he witnessed Lydia's fearless dash into the blaze.

Inside the house, the smoke swirled around Lydia, stinging her eyes and throat. Anne, hearing the sound of determined footsteps through the crackling fire, turned to see Lydia emerging through the haze. Surprise flickered across her face, quickly replaced by alarm.

"Lydia, what are you doing here?" Anne shouted over the roar of the fire, her voice a mixture of concern and disbelief.

"I'm helping!" Lydia yelled back, her voice resolute. Despite the danger, there was no place she'd rather be than by Anne's side, facing the peril together.

Amid chaos and flames, Anne and Lydia worked together with a synergy that defied the peril surrounding them. Anne handed Lydia some blankets, and without hesitation, Lydia moved to shut the door closest to the fire's wrath. She placed a blanket at its base, an attempt to hinder the smoke's relentless spread. Anne mirrored her actions, her resolve as firm as Lydia's. Outside, Gilbert, witnessing the scene unfold, took it upon himself to douse the flames with water. When his gaze found Anne inside the house, panic laced his voice. "Anne!" he shouted, but she was too focused, shutting the door and securing a blanket at its base.

Lydia and Anne continued their makeshift firefighting with a grim determination. Finally, their efforts bore fruit, and Anne emerged from the house, a cough wracking her frame, evidence of the smoke she had inhaled. The adults, alongside a visibly worried Diana, rushed to her side, enveloping her in a hug. Diana's relief at seeing Anne safe was palpable, but it was short-lived. Her eyes darted around, searching, and a knot of dread formed in her stomach. "Anne, where is Lydia?!" she asked, panic edging her voice.

Anne's face blanched. "She was right behind me," she said, the worry clear in her voice.

It was then that Lydia's form appeared, emerging from the smoke-filled doorway. She was on the ground, coughing violently, a desperate struggle for air. With sheer willpower, she crawled towards the safety of the outside, her strength waning. The sight of Lydia in such a state drew a collective gasp from the onlookers.

"Lydia!" The cry came from her mother, Diana, and Anne simultaneously, a mix of relief and renewed fear.

Diana and Anne rushed to her, their embrace a mixture of relief and concern. "Are you okay!" Diana's voice trembled with emotion, her eyes scanning Lydia for any sign of injury.

Lydia managed a weak smile, the corners of her mouth lifting in a gesture of reassurance. "I'm okay," she whispered, her voice hoarse.

"Are you sure?" Anne's question was laced with concern, her eyes searching Lydia's for the truth.

In that moment, surrounded by the worried faces of her loved ones, Lydia felt the weight of what they had just endured. Yet, the warmth of their concern, the strength of their bond, offered a comforting balm to the fear and exhaustion. They stood together, a testament to their resilience and the unbreakable ties that bound them.

Lydia stood beside Diana, their arms interlocked, as they listened to the priest's solemn words. The church pews were filled with members of the community, their faces reflecting a mixture of relief and gratitude. It had been a trying time for Avonlea, but as the service progressed, there was a tangible sense of unity and resilience in the air.

"I'm happy you're okay," Diana whispered in Lydia's ear, her voice filled with genuine concern.

"Me too," Lydia replied, offering her friend a reassuring smile.

As the priest concluded his remarks, Rachel Lynde, the ever-vigilant voice of reason in Avonlea, rose to address the congregation. Her no-nonsense demeanor and sharp tongue belied a heart of gold, and today was no exception.

"Alright, it's settled. The Gillis family will be billeted out to the Barrys, the Cuthberts, and ourselves," she announced, her tone firm yet compassionate.

The men of the community gathered to discuss the logistics of repairing the Gillis home, estimating that it would take about a week to complete the necessary repairs. Meanwhile, the women exchanged knowing glances, silently acknowledging the challenges that lay ahead.

"We owe you all a great debt of thanks, especially dear Anne and Lydia, for risking your lives for us and taking such quick action," Mrs. Gillis expressed her gratitude, her voice tinged with emotion. "And, ladies, thank you kindly for agreeing to take the children. Especially since school won't be in session. You'll have your hands full."

Lydia couldn't help but smile at Mrs. Gillis's heartfelt words. Despite the hardships they had faced, there was a sense of camaraderie and solidarity among the members of the community. As Mrs. Gillis ushered her daughter Ruby forward, Lydia felt a swell of warmth in her heart.

"Ruby, come here," Mrs. Gillis called out, her voice tinged with affection as she guided her daughter towards the group.

"It's no trouble at all," Marilla reassured Mrs. Gillis with a warm smile. "We're happy to have her."

Anne beamed at Marilla, feeling a sense of gratitude for the woman who had become a second mother to her. The prospect of having Lydia stay with them brought a spark of excitement to Green Gables.

Lydia, however, was momentarily pulled from the conversation when her mother called out to her.

"Lydia, come here," her mother beckoned.

Lydia made her way over to her mother, a curious expression on her face.

"Yes, Mother?" Lydia inquired, wondering what her mother needed.

"You will be staying with the Cuthberts because we need the extra room for the kids," Mrs. Barry explained, her tone gentle. "Is that fine with you?"

Lydia looked at her mother with a soft smile, understanding the practicality of the arrangement. "Yes, Mother," she replied, accepting the decision.

A couple of feet away, a protest arose. Ruby, one of the Gillis children, was vehemently expressing her desire to stay with Diana and her family. Mr. Gillis, growing frustrated, silenced Ruby with a stern reprimand.

"That's enough!" he snapped at Ruby. "The plan is set."

Lydia couldn't help but feel a twinge of sympathy for Ruby, caught in the upheaval of the situation.

"I'll never live it down!" Ruby pleaded desperately. "Please don't make me!"

"I won't have any more of this," Mrs. Gillis declared firmly, her patience wearing thin. "After the events of this evening, you should be grateful to have a bed to sleep in at all."

Lydia's heart went out to Ruby, witnessing the devastation etched on her face. She had lost so much in such a short span of time.

"Hear, hear," Rachel interjected, her voice cutting through the tension with calm authority.

"I apologize," Mrs. Gillis interjected, her voice trembling with emotion. "I simply..."

With tears welling in her eyes, Mrs. Gillis turned away, seeking solace in the arms of her husband and the comfort of her baby. Ruby stood alone, the weight of her circumstances heavy on her shoulders.

"It doesn't matter what the other girls think, Ruby," Diana asserted, her voice filled with compassion. "It matters what you think. And I, for one, think Anne is marvelous and brave, and Lydia is shy but determined."

Diana's words rang true, bringing a sense of solidarity to the trio of friends. Lydia and Anne exchanged glances, sharing a silent understanding. With a gentle smile, they pulled Diana into a group hug.

I'll visit soon, alright?" Diana promised, her smile warm and genuine as she looked at Lydia and Anne.

Lydia felt a surge of excitement at the prospect of spending time with Anne at Green Gables, yet a twinge of nervousness lingered with Ruby's presence. She watched as Diana walked away to join their parents, her heart heavy with conflicting emotions.

"It's alright. Don't worry," Anne reassured Ruby, her voice soothing. "I'm sure no one will think you're not our friend."

Lydia offered Ruby a gentle smile, silently conveying her support. As Matthew approached the trio of girls, a sense of anticipation filled the air.

"I reckon we should be off," Matthew announced to Anne, breaking the momentary silence.

With a nod of agreement, all five of them, including Miss Cuthbert, made their way to the waiting carriage, ready to embark on the journey home to Green Gables.

In the warmth of Marilla's kitchen, the morning light spilled through the curtains, painting the room in hues of gold and amber. Lydia, Anne, and Ruby sat huddled around the sturdy oak table, each nursing a cup of steaming tea, its gentle aroma mingling with the cozy atmosphere. Marilla, ever the figure of authority and care, occupied the head of the table, her gaze soft yet observant as she watched over the girls. The night's events had woven them closer, threads of shared experience drawing tight.

Once the last drops of tea had been sipped, the cups clinking softly as they were set down, Marilla cleared her throat. "Now, I'd like the three of you to go upstairs to bed for a few hours," she directed, her voice firm but laced with concern. "You three need rest after that terrible night."

Lydia offered a weary but grateful nod, her eyes heavy with fatigue yet glittering with unshed tears of relief and gratitude.

"I can help you, Marilla," Anne piped up, her spirit ever eager to be of use. "I should fetch the eggs."

Marilla's lips quirked in a smile that was both amused and affectionate. "You can, but you won't," she countered gently. "Now up to bed with the three of you. Anne, please see to it that your guests are comfortable."

Rising from the bench, Anne's youthful energy seemed to momentarily displace the weight of the night's fears. "Come along, Ruby and Lydia," she beckoned, her voice dancing with the promise of comfort. "I have a lovely gable room. And the cherry tree is ever so friendly."

Lydia and Ruby, drawn by Anne's vibrant energy, pushed back their chairs and followed her lead. Each step they took away from the kitchen and towards the sanctuary of Anne's room felt like a step further from the night's horrors and closer to the promise of peace. The warmth of the kitchen, the solidarity in Marilla's words, and the hope in Anne's eyes wove around Lydia a tapestry of safety and belonging she hadn't known she needed.
