6x8: "Invest in love "

Mia's POV:
Ahh, another tiring shift at Seattle Grace Mercy West. I was paged at 4 am by Owen to help him and Callie with a girl who fell off the roof of her house and had multiple broken bones. My day hasn't even started yet and I've had three cups of coffee.

Mia: "Ugh, my day hasn't even started yet, and I'm ready for my fourth cup of coffee. I'm gonna be bouncing off the walls by this afternoon."

Callie: "You may be exhausted, but you look great."

Callie and I share a laugh as we approach Arizona.

Callie: "Hey, I brought you some coffee- oh, you already have one."

Arizona: "Oh no. I want your coffee. I need your coffee."

Mia: "I need a fifth cup of coffee."

Arizona, Callie, and I share a laugh as Owen approaches us.

Owen: "Okay, when you see Cristina, she is gonna be mad. She's gonna be mad at me for not paging her in here last night, possibly mad at you for not waking her up either, and possibly mad at you for not texting her."

Mia: "Oh, come on."

Owen: "I am handling this. Do not engage her. Do not provoke her. Simply ignore her, alright?"

Callie: "Oh, that's your plan... ignore the scalpel-hungry animal?"

Owen: "Yep, until I come up with something better."

Mia: "Good luck with that."

Then I got an idea and called Owen.

Mia: "Hey Owen, dealing with Cristina can be tricky. Just remember to stay calm, listen to her when she's ready to talk and give her space if she needs it. Sometimes, acknowledging her feelings and being patient is the best approach."

I smile when I see Jackson. I stand next to him and wait for Arizona to start.

Mia: "Hey."

Jackson: "Hey. Coffee for you."

My smile grows bigger when Jackson hands me a cup of coffee.

Jackson: I know you were up at four in the morning so I know you need it.

Mia: "Thanks, Jackie."

Jackson playfully rolls his eyes at me before throwing his arm around my shoulders as Arizona starts her rounds. I was with Jackson, Percy, Cristina, Owen, and Callie.

Arizona: "Okay, I know this is the first time on a Peds rotation with me for some of you. Not for others."

Arizona flashes me a quick smile then gives Cristina a small tight-lipped smile.

Arizona: "But I wanted you to understand that I run my Peds unit a little differently than you may be used to. This is not general surgery in miniature. These are the tiny humans. These are children. They believe in magic, and they play pretend. There is fairy dust in their bags. They hope and they cross their fingers and they make wishes. And that makes them more resilient than adults. They recover faster, they survive worse. They believe. In Peds, we have... miracles and magic. In Peds, anything is possible."

Jackson keeps his arm around me as we walk through the door of Peds.

Cristina turns towards me and silently fake gags, making me stifle a laugh. We begin our rounds on Hillary Boyd, the girl who fell off her roof.
I smile when I see another patient of ours, Wallace Anderson, dressed in mini scrubs and a mini lab coat, standing next to Hillary's bed.

Wallace: "Good morning Dr. Robbins, morning Dr. S."

Mia: "Good morning Dr. Wallace."

Arizona: "I see you've already introduced yourself to Mr and Mrs Boyd."

Mrs. Boyd: "Yes. Reminds me of Hillary at that age. Such an overachiever."

Callie: "Dr. Shepherd, would you like to present?"

Mia: "I would love to. Excuse me, Dr. Wallace."
I chuckle at the little boys as I stand close to Hilary's bed.

Mia: "Hillary Boyd. 15 years old, fell off the roof of her house. Diagnosed with 52 acute fractures when she was admitted last night. An intricate and extremely challenging ORIF surgery was performed by Dr.
Torres, Dr. Hunt, and myself this morning before rounds."

Owen: "Thank you, Dr. Shepherd."
I smiled at Owen and then looked at Jackson who was already looking at me. He sends me a wink, causing me to blush.

Callie: "If she fares well enough today, I'd like to go in tomorrow to repair her subtrochanteric fracture next."

Arizona: "Can anyone tell me the proper dosage of ceftriaxone for a pediatric patient?"

J&Mi: "50 milligrams per kilogram per day."

Jackson and I share a look and we smirk at each other with amusement.

Arizona: "Mhmm."

Mia: "Dr. Wallace, can you tell us the proper dose for this patient if she were 42 kilograms?"

I watch as Wallace does the math on his clipboard.

Wallace: "2.1 grams per day... if you carry the decimal."

Mia: "Very good."

Jackson's POV:

The entire time we're in Hillary Boyd's room, I watch Mia interact with Wallace and I couldn't help but admire how good she is with kids.

My POV:
After we finished rounding on Hillary, we walked to Wallace's room.

Arizona: "Okay, who's presenting?"

Wallace: "I am Dr. Robbins."

Arizona: "Proceed."

Wallace: "Wallace Anderson, 10 years old... almost 11, been here 7 months, in and out over the past two years. Suffers from short gut syndrome, which means he can't properly absorb nutrition."

Arizona: "Exactly. Dr. Percy?"

Charles: "Uh, 15 intestinal surgeries to date, plus a bowel lengthening procedure, which helped him for a while, but recently, he's had to go back to being fed through TPN."

Wallace: "Yum."

I chuckle at the little boy. When I see Wallace's parents walk in, I offer them a warm smile.
Mrs. Anderson: "How'd he do this morning?"

Arizona: "We covered some pretty advanced algebraic conversions."

Wallace: "Dr. Robbins, and sometimes Dr. S. help me with my math and science homework by letting me go on rounds."

Cristina: "Fascinating."

Jackson and I stifle a laugh as we look at my best friend.

Mr. Anderson: "We try to keep his life as normal as we can, even living in a hospital."
Wallace: "But I can skip my homework on Friday, right, since it's my birthday?"

Mrs. Anderson: "Since it's your birthday."

Wallace: "What about Dr. Robbin?"

Jackson looks at me in shock.

Arizona: I'm afraid I can't skip my homework Wallace, but I can come celebrate with you like I promised.

Wallace: "Dr. S?"

Mia: "I'll try my best buddy."

I leave the room with everyone.

-the next day-

I get invited over for breakfast at Callie and Cristina's apartment.
Wearing this

(minus glasses)

I was shocked when Arizona told me about the money that Wallace's parents gave to the hospital.

Mia: "holy crap, 25 million dollars? That's incredible Arizona."

Arizona: "I always knew that Wallace's parents were wealthy, but not 25 million dollars wealthy. I mean, that's "libraries named after you" kind of money, "saved babies in Africa and has dinner at the White House regularly" type money."

Mark: "People don't give me that kind of money. You have an unfair advantage. You work with children."

Callie: "oatmeal, side of fruit, wheat toast, hold the butter."

Owen: "Thank you."

Callie: "Scrambled eggs, bagel with extra cream cheese, and bacon."

Mia: "Thank ya!"

I eat my breakfast as Callie talks to Arizona.

Arizona: "You know what? That money is gonna make such a difference for my patients."

Mia: "I agree Arizona. It's amazing."

Mark: "Maybe I should start doing more cleft-palate kids. Everyone's a sucker for those."

I chuckle at my salty godfather.

Callie: "Cheese omelet, extra butter, cinnamon toast, crispy bacon."

Cristina: "Mine!"

Arizona: "25 million dollars is pretty cool, right?"

Mia: "Totally cool."

Lexie: "Best birthday gift ever."

Callie: "Birthday gift."

Lexie: "Yeah. Well, 'c-cause the money's a gift. I mean, technically, it's for the hospital, not Arizona, but since your birthday's on Friday..."

Callie: "Um... how does little Grey know about your birthday and I don't?
Awkward."

Arizona: "Birthdays are just days like any other day."

Mia: "Facts."

Arizona: "I don't like them. Don't celebrate them. No big deal."

Mia: "Also facts."

Arizona: "25 million dollars? That's a big deal."

Mia: "another fact. "

I decided to leave with Arizona to the hospital.

When I get there, I see Alex in the lobby holding a bunch of papers.

Mia: "Hey Alex. What are all those papers about?"

Alex: "uh... it's Izzie's medical bills."

I look at the big stack of papers, take them in my hands, and look over them.

Mia: "Oh my god."

Alex: "I don't know how I'm supposed to pay for all this. I'm a resident for crying out loud."

Mia: "Alex, I am more than happy to help you out. I have a good pension from being a soldier"

Alex: "No, I can handle it, Mia."

Mia: "Alex, I'm willing to help you. You won't have to pay me back, I promise."

Alex: "No Mia, I'm serious. I'm fine. I can handle it."

Mia: "Fine. But I'm serious, you tell me if you need any money and I'll gladly give it to you. I'll see you later. I love you."

I kiss Alex on the cheek then I run off. As I change in the locker room, I call my bank and ask them to deposit money out of my account that I can pick it up later. Alex is one of my first friends and despite how stubborn he is, he needs help so I'm gonna be a good friend and help him.

-later-

I follow Arizona to Wallace's room and I see Wallace asleep while his mom is in the chair. She explained to us that Wallace had a bad night then Wallace tried to convince Arizona and me that he was okay to do rounds but Arizona and I managed to convince Wallace to rest for the day and join us for evening rounds instead. Then, Wallace's mom does a really sweet thing chant-like thing to take away Wallace's bad day and keep good dreams. I found it very sweet.

After Arizona ordered Percy to get labs for Wallace, I decided to see Dad with his patient for a while. She started to seize and at that exact moment, Alex got a page for the patient's baby so I followed Alex to the NICU to help out. As we start C-pap, Percy shows us that Wallace has another bowel obstruction. Alex takes over then I get a page from Owen.

Mia: "Yes Hunt?"

Owen: "Hillary Boyd's tox screens from yesterday came back positive for psilocybin."

Mia: "magic mushrooms?Woah."

I walk with Callie and Owen to Hillary's room where I see Jackson and Cristina examining her. I quickly smile at Jackson before turning to Hillary's parents.

Owen: "Mr and Mrs Boyd."

Callie: "We thought you should know that Hillary's tox screens from yesterday show signs of psilocybin in her bloodstream."

Mr. Boyd: "What does that mean?"

Owen: "Well, it means when she fell from the roof, she was, uh..."

J&Mi: "Shrooming."

Mia: "magic mushrooms."

Mrs. Boyd: "What?"

Mr. Boyd: "Hillary!"

Mrs. Boyd: "Mushrooms?"

Hillary: "Oh, come on. Can everybody please chill out?"

Mrs. Boyd: "What in God's name were you thinking?"

Mr. Boyd: "You know, I can't
believe... you're a disappointment young lady, a big big disappointment."
I look at Hillary's father in shock.

Hillary: "Dad, please. Okay, the last thing I am is a disappointment. I get straight A's, I'm on the honor roll, I run the student council, I am the school paper and I tutor kids with reading problems. I'm every parent's dream come true, including yours. I was exploring the bounds of my consciousness with the help of a mushroom. I made a calculated risk going on that roof. Falling off? Well, that was a low-probability event, and even low-probability events occasionally occur, and this one did. So yeah, you're bummed I miscalculated 'cause it reminds you of your fallibility. I'm bummed too. Let's just leave it at that."

I look over at Jackson and we share an amused smirk. Once we finish examining Hillary, we take her into surgery.

Owen: "Well, it looks like you used pretty much every piece of hardware in the hospital."

Callie: "Yeah, it makes you think twice about shrooming on a roof."

Owen: "Yeah. And the mouth on this one? If I talked to my parents like that-"

Callie: "Oh, my father would've... oh, you don't even want to know."

Cristina: "I had perfect grades, perfect record, and I said whatever I wanted, did whatever I wanted. My parents couldn't do a thing about it."

Jackson: "Want to hear about my childhood? No? Okay. I'll just, uh, think about it quietly in my head."

Owen: "What about you Mia?"

Mia: "I was adopted by Derek and Allison at twelve, felt betrayed by Allison and Mark, joined the army as a medic, and was discharged, I forgave Mark and Allison, and now I'm a resident at Seattle West Mercy Hospital, the end." I smiled at them all.

Callie and Owen chuckle at me as we continue the surgery.

- later-

Mia: "Oh my god, shirtless Alex."

I chuckle when I see my shirtless friend holding a preemie baby.

Alex: "Shut up."

Dad: "What are you doing?"

Bailey: "he's saving a baby's life, that's what."

Reed: "Dr. Bailey, I... oh, no shirt. He's wearing no shirt."
I smirk at Adamson who looks very flustered.

Mia: "Take a picture sweetheart, it lasts longer."

Dad: "Have you started to lactate yet?"

I chuckle at my dad and give him a high five.

Alex: "Bailey made me."

Mark: "Is this the room for the calendar shoot? I was told it was downstairs." I
chuckle at Mark and give him a high five before Bailey kicks us out.

-the next day-

I decided to check on Alex in the NICU. When I get there, I see Alex still shirtless holding the preemie baby.

Mia: "Hey rockstar. How ya feelin'?"

Alex: "Okay."

Mia: "Listen, I know you said you didn't want my help, but... I made some calls and most of Izzie's bills are taken care of " Alex looks at me in shock.

Alex: "Mia... you didn't have to do that."

Mia: "Before you get mad at me, I wanted to help. You're my first friend, who accepted me in this hospital and I'd do anything for you. It didn't even dent my bank account all that much."

Alex: "Mia ... you didn't have to do that."

Mia: "Alex, you're one of my good friends. I'd do anything for you. Plus I like to help."

Alex sighs at me and then smiles.

Alex: "Thanks."

Mia: "No problem. And don't worry about paying me back, you don't have to."
I kiss Alex's forehead.

Mia: "You gonna go home?"

I give Alex one last kiss then I run off to check on Hillary. I do her vitals and then write in her chart. I listen to her talk on the phone with someone I assume is her friend. Turns out it was a dealer so I stole the phone from her and talked to the dealer myself.

Mia: "Hey there little pusher girl, this is one of Hillary's doctors. And now I have her phone, so I'm gonna give this number to the police. How lame is that?"
I hang up the call and put the phone on the table.

Hillary: "What the hell?"

Mia: "I know you think you can say or do whatever the hell you want. And that's about half true, except for the fact that you fell off a roof because you were too high off your ass that you thought you could fly. I've seen people like that before. You nearly died in surgery from a heart complication because your body is so strung out on all the crap you're putting in it, that it almost shut down completely. That doesn't make you smarter than everybody else, it makes you a bigger idiot. You're lucky that you're still alive. You need to learn to grow the hell up kid, before karma comes back and bites you in the ass."
I grab the chart and then walk out of Hillary's room.

Once I give the chart to a nurse, I grab my things in my locker, change then walk out of the hospital to go home. As I get to my car, I get a text from Callie.

Ortho Goddess ): "wanna come over?"

Me: "Sure I guess."

I put my bag in the back of my car and drove to Callie and Cristina's apartment. When I get there, I see Arizona walking to the door as well.

Mia: "Hey Arizona. Bad day?"

Arizona: "Wallace Anderson died."

Mia: "Oh god, I'm so sorry."
I squeeze Arizona's arm in comfort.

Mia: "How about we get drunk to forget about our crappy day. Does that sound nice?"

Arizona:" Yeah."

I smile at Arizona as she unlocks the door. The second we walk in, I jump when I hear people.

Everyone: "Surprise!!"

My eyes widen when I see all my friends drinking and wearing party hats. I looked up to see a sign that said Happy Birthday Arizona, I looked over at Arizona who started to cry. She starts sobbing and then runs out of the room. I walk over to Callie and whisper to her.

Mia: "Wallace Anderson died today. Go."

Callie immediately runs out of the apartment. Everyone starts to leave and I find myself sitting with Jackson.

Mia: "hey"

Jackson: "Might as well take advantage, huh? The party's a dud, but at least there's free booze, right?"

Mia: "True."

I see Lexie come over to us as Jackson passes me a drink.

Lexie: "Go ahead and gloat. Surprise parties never come to anything good."

Mia: "fair point."

I chuckle at Lexie as I walk away with Jackson.

-later-

Mia: "Hey, have you seen Cris? I wanna let her know I'm leaving."

Lexie: "Uh, I think I saw her going into her room."

Mia: "m'kay!"
I walk over to Cristina's room and I walk in.

Mia: "Hey Cris, I'm heading out so..."

I look up and I see Cristina pushing Jackson away from a kiss.

Cristina: "Baby Shepherd."

Mia: "Uh, I just wanted to say goodbye before I go home. Uh, I'll see you later. Bye."

I walk out of the room, and I drive home for the night.

💭Why did I feel weird about seeing Jackson kissing Cristina? Jackson and I are friends. It didn't mean anything. And Cristina pushed him away, she loves Owen.
You know what? It doesn't matter.💭

When I got home, Rex walked to me and together we plopped on the couch and fell asleep
