Exiting the bathroom, Naruto couldn't help but grin as he scrolled through the items on his screen, each one adding to his arsenal of abilities. His mood was light, almost giddy with the recent victories and acquisitions.
An ANBU recruit, washing his hands at the sink, glanced over at Naruto's amused expression.
"Was the poop that great?" he asked.
Naruto, caught off guard by the question, stammered for a moment.
"What? Oh... uh, yeah," he said, a flush of embarrassment coloring his cheeks.
The recruit raised an eyebrow, a smirk playing on his lips.
"Sure, man. Whatever you say," he said, chuckling.
"Hey, when you've got skills like mine, even taking a dump is an adventure."
The recruit laughed, shaking his head. "Weirdo," he teased, turning back to the sink.
Naruto, flipped him off with his middle finger as he walked out the door.
After Naruto had left the bathroom, the seemingly ordinary ANBU recruit spoke into his palm, where a hidden Fuinjutsu array was etched.
"Subject Naruto Uzumaki has left the stall after a time period of three hours. Chakra fluctuations at an all-time high. Awaiting further commands," he reported in a low, discreet tone.
His voice was devoid of the casual, playful tone he had used with Naruto just moments ago.
A response came through the Fuinjutsu array, a voice that held authority and command. "You are dismissed, Root Agent Beetle," it ordered.
Upon receiving the command, the Root Agent Beetle – began to dissolve into a mass of insects. The insects swarmed for a brief moment before scattering in different directions, disappearing without a trace.
...
Naruto felt the air in the hallway grow chilly, causing goosebumps on his skin. The low light from the dim lanterns cast long shadows across the polished wooden floor, creating an eerie feel in the usually tense but energetic ANBU headquarters. The silence around him was deep and almost overwhelming, a stark contrast to the usual subtle hum of activity in the building.
With every sense on alert, Naruto moved cautiously towards the door. His hand lightly touched the wood, feeling its grain under his fingertips. As he pushed the door open, it creaked softly, breaking the heavy silence.
Inside the room, Naruto was met with an unexpected sight. An old man sat at his table, his face lined with age and a large part of his body covered in bandages. Despite the charged atmosphere of the room, the man exuded a sense of calm and tranquility. In front of him was a shogi board, set up and ready for a game, as if inviting Naruto to join in a quiet battle of wits.

Remembering the advice Dragon had given him about the virtue of patience, Naruto held back his urge to immediately start asking questions or throwing around Jutsus at the old man. Instead, he took a deep, calming breath and settled into the seat opposite the old man at the shogi board.
As Naruto focused on the game before him, he realized that it was his turn to make the first move.
A sigh escaped him, a mix of exasperation and recognition of the gravity of the moment.
Naruto used Spirit Possession.
With Sherlock's essence guiding him, Naruto's perception of his surroundings became extraordinarily vivid. Every shogi piece, every line on the old man's face, and even the soft ticking of a clock in the room.
Naruto gently slid a pawn forward, a cautious yet assertive move that showed he was neither hesitant nor overly aggressive. The piece landed with a soft clink, breaking the tense silence.
There was no immediate move in response; instead, the man simply observed Naruto for what felt like an eternity, searching for any hint of hesitation or uncertainty.
But Naruto held his ground, his expression neutral, waiting for the old man's response. He knew that beyond this game of shogi lay answers to questions he didn't even know to ask. For now, he would play, watch, and learn.
The clink of wooden pieces was the only sound as the tension thickened.
The old man's fingers danced gracefully over the board, selecting a knight and moving it two squares forward and one to the left.
"A young genin from the ranks of the academy to ANBU directly. Quite the achievement."
Swallowing the nervousness building inside him, Naruto countered by advancing his silver general forward one space, sandwiched between his gold generals. "I am lucky, I guess."
The old man, with the ghost of a smirk playing on his lips, slid his bishop diagonally across the board.
"Luck is a fickle thing. Pure luck doesn't secure one the Hokage's seat."
With a calculated grace, Naruto shifted his rook vertically up by three spaces, approaching the old man's territory. His eyes narrowed in challenge. "Luck backed by hard work, determination, and skill lands one the seat."
The old man hesitated for a fraction of a second before advancing his gold general. "A perspective shared by many," he remarked, his eyes never leaving the board.
Naruto blinked, momentarily thrown off by the cryptic statement. He maneuvered his lance forward, nearing the old man's king. "What do you think lands the Hokage seat?"
Taking his pawn, the old man moved it one square forward, immediately threatening Naruto's lance.
"Merit and the drive to do what's necessary," he replied, his cold gaze locking onto Naruto's.
A tense silence ensued, broken only by the sound of Naruto's pawn advancing. The young ninja's mind raced, each move weighing heavier than the last.
The old man then moved his gold general diagonally, further pressuring Naruto's defense. "Do you have what it takes to become Hokage?"
Naruto's hand hesitated for a split second before selecting his knight, moving it into a defensive position. "I do," he responded firmly.
The old man nodded in acknowledgment and promptly advanced his king. "Then answer me, what would you do if you were the captain of a crew, and one of your crewmen was sick with a contagious disease? What would you do?"
With the precision and confidence of a Holmes deduction, Naruto swiftly moved his silver general diagonally, pressing on the old man's bishop. "I'd isolate the crewman, ensuring his comfort and health, while simultaneously protecting the rest of my crew. Every life matters. As a leader, the safety and well-being of every individual under my charge is paramount."
The old man stared at the board, then at Naruto, his eyes reflecting nothing but coldness.
With a practiced ease, the old man slid his promoted pawn forward, cutting a direct line to Naruto's king. "An idealistic answer."
Naruto's fingers moved with determination, maneuvering his bishop, creating a blockade. "What would you do?"
The old man inhaled sharply. "Sometimes, sacrifices must be made for the greater good. If the situation demanded it, I'd eliminate the threat, even if it meant sacrificing the crewman. The mission's success and the safety of the majority come first."
For a few minutes, the room was silent except for the shogi pieces moving across the board, each move a reflection of the players' contrasting ideologies. Naruto, with his belief in the sanctity of every life, and the old man, with his ruthless utilitarian approach.
In the end, experience and strategy prevailed. The old delivered a checkmate, sealing Naruto's fate on the board. Standing up, he looked down at the young ninja. "Keep practicing. An idealistic mindset can only bring you nothing but failure. We are the protectors of Konoha, we must do what we can for Konoha."
And with that, he left the room, leaving Naruto lost in thought as glanced at the old man.
