Why is This Night Different?
i parked my car in the driveway. i had just gotten home from another long shift. i had a lot of those lately and i hated them. that's what you got when you didn't have seniority yet. i was just about to open my car door before my phone rang.
i dug through my bag, looking for my phone.
"hello?" i sighed
"cassandra?" a voice said
"who is this?"
"i'm carrie, i met you awhile back"
"whatever" she added
i was very confused.
"i'm calling on quinn's behalf"
"quinn?"
"okay"
"i know this sounds weird but is it possible for you to fly out here as soon as you can?"
"i'm sorry, what?"
"give me the phone" i heard someone say fun the background.
"cass" i heard quinn sigh.
"quinn, what's wrong?"
"i fucking got shot" he groaned
"what?"
"clean through my side"
"you sure it made it fully through?"
"mhm"
"there's an exit wound"
"no bullet"
"goddammit, stay awake"
"i'm trying, cass"
i ran a hand through my hair
"it's gonna be awhile until i get to you"
"i know"
"put me on speaker"
"take your belt off and tie it above your wound"
"tight"
"and you're positive it's clean through?"
"yeah, maybe it an artery at most" the woman said
"i gave him a shot of something, but i'm not sure it's working"
"so, you have a medic kit?"
"yeah"
"is there saline in there?"
"let me see-"
"yeah"
"rinse it out"
"it's gonna hurt, quinn"
"keep the pressure on it to stop the bleeding"
"soak some cotton pads in the saline and pack the wound with it"
"as long as you keep it clean for now, i'll see what i can do when i get there"
"okay"
"i'll be on the next flight out, okay, quinn?"
"yeah, cass" he mumbled
"fuck"
"alright, i gotta let you go cassandra" the woman said
"okay" i sighed
holy fuck.
for the past few days, it was obvious that kory thought something was up with me. there was a lot up with me. my whole life was fucked right now. right now especially.
i unlocked the front door, slipping my shoes off.
"how're you?" kory asked, turning his head to look at me. he was sitting on the couch.
"are you okay?" he added
"you look pale"
"not good" i said
"what happened?"
"i need to go"
he raised his eyebrows "go, where?"
"a family friend is in surgery right now"
"she had an accident and it's not looking good"
"what happened?"
"i didn't get details"
"where is she?"
"in greece, my sister is heading over there too"
"okay" he nodded
"how long are you going to be?"
"i don't know" i shrugged
"i'll come, i can take off work"
"no, kory, it's really okay"
"family is there and it's really importa-"
"okay" he nodded
"it's okay, cassandra"
"do you need to leave tonight?"
"yeah"
"i hope she doesn't die" i groaned
"cassandra, i'm sure it's fine"
"i don't know"

"i have to pack some things"
"take a breath" he hushed
"i can't fucking take a breath" i shouted
