INT. ANNE'S APARTMENT- DAY
Maya is packing up boxes as ANNE 70s a sweet grandmother with little bifocal glasses sitting on top of her nose.
MAYA- After I take these down to the storage unit that should be it Ms.Anne.
ANNE- Thank you MJ you sweet sweet girl.
Maya smiles.
MAYA- I'll be back to check on you later.
ANNE- You don't have to do that I know you have a lot to do.
MAYA- trust me I have time and I'll make sure you get a plate.
Anne smiles.
MAYA-(V.O) I saw this little sweet angel walking inside the building by herself the other struggling with some groceries and I had to help her....I don't know I was just thinking if my grandmother was somewhere by herself hopefully someone would help her....I miss her especially on days like today. I haven't talked to her since I moved out here.
Maya begins to carry the boxes out to leave.
ANNE- don't forget you be careful in that storage unit keep something in between the door to stop it from locking.
Maya smiles.
MAYA- I will.
Maya begins to walk down the hall.
INT. HAZELS APARTMENT- DAY
Maya walks in and Hazel is walking out of the bathroom in a towel and shower cap on her head.
MAYA- you just getting up?
HAZEL- Hell yes...(she sniffs) what the hell is that, that smells so good? Obviously not you because you look dirty.
Maya looks at herself in the mirror hanging near the front door.
MAYA-(V.O) damn I do look a little dusty.
MAYA- Well to answer your question that is the turkey and girl shut up...I was helping Ms.Anne clean out some things in her apartment.
HAZEL- I still can't believe you made a friend in this building I don't know any of these people.
MAYA- that's because you don't take the time to get to know anybody, boujee.
Hazel laughs and then gets a sneaky smile.
HAZEL- Whatever, are you gonna make banana pudding?
MAYA- Yes.
HAZEL- And that pineapple upside down cake?
MAYA- Yup.
Hazel smiles and close her eyes imagining it.
HAZEL- Oh my God have I told you how much I love you and I'm so happy you're here?
Maya smiles and shakes her head
MAYA- Greedy hoe.
Hazel smiles.
HAZEL- I went extra hard at the gym this week just to prepare for this.
Maya laughs.
MAYA- so are you inviting Miss Teseana Anderson over?
Hazel blushes.
HAZEL- Yes.
Maya smirks.
MAYA- oh you must really like her.
HAZEL- I'm trying to.
MAYA- Trying to?
HAZEL- You know I'm actually doing stuff a normal dating girl is supposed to do like inviting someone over for thanksgiving.
Maya laughs a little.
MAYA- you know it's real love when you're spending thanksgiving together.
INT. STEVENS FAMILY HOUSE - THANKSGIVING LAST YEAR
Steven and Maya sit comfortably next to each other across from other members of his family all in the middle of talking and laughing he has his arm around Maya.
Maya begins to get up from her seat.
STEVEN- what's wrong?
MAYA- nothing I just wanted to get a slice of cake.
STEVEN- I got you I'll get it.
Maya smiles.
Steven gets up and kisses Maya on the cheek and goes into the kitchen. She smiles at him as he cuts her a slice of cake.
He walks back into the dining room and sits next to her.
AUNT- You two are so cute when is the wedding?
Maya and Steven look at each other in a playful way waiting for the other person to answer.
STEVEN-(smiling) why you looking at me like that?
MAYA- I think that's a you question shorty.
Steven laughs a little and then looks at her.
STEVEN- Soon.
Maya looks at him believing him.
STEVEN- very soon.
Maya has a half smile.
Steven goes back to talking to his family and Maya looks down at her phone seeing a picture of Mariah and her parents Instagram. She stares at it for a moment.
She taps Steven on the shoulder. He looks at her.
MAYA-(low voice) Hey are we still leaving here to go to my parents house?
STEVEN- Maybe in a little bit....Im still waiting oh my cousin to get here.
MAYA- Yeah I get that but it's getting late...
STEVEN- I mean you wanna go without me?
Maya looks at him raising her eye brow. She's pissed.
STEVEN- I didn't mean it like that...I'm just saying-
Maya raises her hand up to his face.
MAYA- Whatever.
Maya gets up from the table and walks off.
MAYA- (low voice) dry ass cake.
INT. HAZELS APARTMENT- CURRENT TIME
HAZEL- So is Brian coming or do he got his kids today?
Maya laughs.
MAYA- he was one kid...and no he's not coming.
HAZEL- Why not? So you cooking all this food for your health?
MAYA- He's with his family....and plus I was thinking about inviting Sterling.
HAZEL- So Sterling is always over. In fact he about to start paying this cable bill for as much shit he has recorded. Like what the hell is a first take?
Maya laughs.
MAYA- Okay so um...the night of the black out.
Hazel smiles.
HAZEL- a good night.
MAYA- bitch can you be serious?
HAZEL- Okay what?
MAYA- I wanted to kiss Sterling....like really bad.
Hazel looks at her with no type of shock or enthusiasm.
MAYA-(confused) did you hear what I said?
Maya looks around.
MAYA-(convincing) I wanted to kiss Sterling.
HAZEL- Well duh who doesn't want to kiss Sterling....I'm gay and I want to kiss him every time he covers a tab....that's a good man.
MAYA- Haze I'm serious....Im talking about a real kiss not a kiss like the first time we kissed this felt different we were talking to each other about the things we want out of life...and I know it's been a short time but sometimes the way he looks at me....I just....I feel so seen with him...I never felt this understood by someone else before, and damn...
HAZEL- damn what?
MAYA- It's scary.

Hazel laughs and shakes her head.

Hazel puts her arm around her.

Sterling is packing his suitcase and dancing to music. Ryan bursts in.
RYAN- Dude...are you seriously leaving again this year?
STERLING-Im sorry I can't hear you over the music and St.Barts calling.
Ryan walks over and pauses the music.
RYAN- Fuck St.Barts come on let's spend thanksgiving together.
STERLING- You don't fuck St.Barts but you do bring someone to St.Barts to-
RYAN- Bro.
Sterling laughs.
STERLING- What?
RYAN- Why don't you come over to Nicks with me?
STERLING- Ain't that man white?
RYAN- He's mixed!

Ryan laughs.

They both laugh and Ryan hits him one of his pillows.

RYAN- Look I know you avoid being home for thanksgiving because you don't want to think about your family.
Sterling rolls his eyes.

Sterling grabs his suitcase and begins to walk out the door and Maya enters.
STERLING- I would pay you one hundred dollars to knock.
Maya rolls her eyes.
STERLING- And what is all over your clothes?
RYAN- yeah girl it look like you been rolling around in time square.
Sterling laughs.
MAYA- first of all fuck both of yall...I've been helping Miss. Anne out something yall should be doing.
Ryan sucks his teeth.
RYAN- shows how much you know I have helped her out plenty of times.
MAYA- you don't know who she is do you?
RYAN- not a clue, but is she okay?
Sterling laughs.
MAYA- anyway...I'm cooking thanksgiving dinner and it's gonna be a lot of food and I wanted to invite you guys over.
RYAN- (touched)Aww. Little MJ...you are the sweetest little turkey.
Ryan hugs her tight. Maya pushes him.
MAYA- did you just call me a turkey?
Ryan looks at Sterling and Sterling raises his hands back shrugging.
RYAN- I meant in a thanksgiving way. Not in a bad way.
Maya stares at him.
RYAN- Sterling said you looked hot on Halloween.
STERLING- Ryan!
Maya laughs.
RYAN- What I'm scared of her?
MAYA- Anyway dinner is at five.
RYAN- I'll be late I'm going to Nicks and then Sterling-
Sterling covers his mouth.
STERLING- I'll be there.
Maya smiles and opens the door to leave and stands is CHRISTINE JACKSON 50s charming a full southern bell, she stands with a smile a suitcase and grocery bags.
STERLING- Ma?
CHRISTINE- (excited) My Bubba!
MAYA-(smiling) Bub...ba.
STERLING- Please don't.
INT. STERLINGS APARTMENT - MOMENTS LATER
Sterling has let his mom inside carrying her bags.
She sits on the sofa and Maya and Ryan follow behind sitting across from her they both try to rush in the same seat and Ryan pushes Maya she falls.
MAYA- Ryan!
CHRISTINE- Now Ryan why would you push this cutie pie?
Ryan smiles.
RYAN- Equal rights.
Maya rolls her, Sterling helps her up and she pushes Ryan on his head.
MAYA- (to Christine) Hi I'm MJ. It's nice to meet you.
Christine smiles.
CHRISTINE- I'm Christine.
STERLING- Ma what are you doing here?
CHRISTINE- it's thanksgiving and I'm tired of you not coming home to Jacksonville.
MAYA- Jacksonville?!
Christine looks at her.
MAYA- I'm sorry.
STERLING- Ma what about Jamie? Don't you always cook for him?
CHRISTINE- Well he had to work this year. And after your call on Halloween it sounds like you miss your momma.
STERLING- I do I do... But I actually have to work to.
RYAN- no he doesn't.
Sterling shoots him a look.
RYAN- I'm sorry but I think you should be around family.
STERLING- Don't you have to get to Nicks?
RYAN- I do actually.
Ryan gets up to leave and Maya trips him with her foot he almost falls.
He shoots a look over to Maya who is trying to hold in her laugh.
RYAN- I'll be back for you....it was nice seeing you again Mrs.Jackson.
CHRISTINE- Wait you're leaving? What are y'all doing for dinner?
MAYA- I'm cooking actually....I should get going to I only came by to invite Sterling and Ryan to dinner....I would love for you to come to...I live right across the hall.
Christine smiles.
CHRISTINE- This little thing can cook?
Maya laughs.
MAYA- I do a little something something.
CHRISTINE- Well see what you got going on.
Maya smiles and her and Christine walk across the hall.
STERLING- Don't worry about me I'm just standing here.
RYAN- I'm actually kinda mad I'm about to miss some of this.
STERLING- Some of what?
RYAN- you in between the two woman you hide your emotions from.
Ryan laughs. Sterling steps closer to him and Ryan backs towards the door.
RYAN- Hey! there's enough black on black crime in this city.
Ryan leaves. Sterling rushes to the door yelling down the hall.

INT. HAZEL'S APARTMENT- DAY
Maya and Christine are cooking together and Hazel sits at the counter drinking wine.
HAZEL- you know what y'all really make this cooking thing look easy.
Maya laughs.
MAYA- you want to help?
HAZEL- No I think I'm good with this job here.
Hazel sips her wine.
HAZEL- oh and this job.
Hazel connects her phone to her radio and begins to play music. "Exhale (Shoop Shoop)" by Whitney Houston " begins to play.
Christine's eyes light up.
CHRISTINE- Now what y'all know about this?
She begins to dance.
MAYA- My mother loves her some Whitney Houston.
Hazel stands up.
HAZEL- Who doesn't?
The three of them begin to dance with each other and sing along.
MAYA-(singing) Sometimes you'll laugh, sometimes you'll cry Life never tells us, the when's or why's!
HAZEL-(singing) When you've got friends, to wish you well (hugging Maya) You'll find your point when you will exhale.
Christine laughs and then she attempts to taste test the greens. She's impressed.
CHRISTINE- MJ these greens are good girl.
Maya smiles.
MAYA-Really?
CHRISTINE-Yes girl they're perfect.
Maya smiles proudly.
CHRISTINE- Now why you looking like you surprised...you know you did good.
Maya laughs nervously.
MAYA- Im just use to my mom in the kitchen with me criticising me about everything...so it's nice just to hear something nice.
CHRISTINE-Well she must of never had these greens.
Maya laughs.
MAYA-Well I'm about to get a in the shower and out of these clothes while the rest of the food is cooking.
INT. LIVING ROOM - CONTINUOUS
When Maya walks out of the kitchen Sterling is walking inside.
STERLING- I need to talk to you.
MAYA- Well I need to get in the shower.
Sterling looks her up and down.
STERLING- Yeah you do...but this is important.
MAYA-Boy shut up and what?
STERLING- You cant have my mom at dinner.
MAYA-Why not? I like her...she's actually more invited than you to be honest.
Sterling gives her a really look.
MAYA- Im not understanding the problem?
STERLING- I just I need to get her back home.
MAYA- Why? I thought you missed your mom anyway.
Sterling sighs.
STERLING- I do.

Sterling sighs.

Maya looks at him confused.
MAYA-Okay to the shower I go.
Maya walks towards the bathroom.
STERLING- I hope your water is ice cold.

INT. NICKS MOTHERS HOUSE - DAY
Nick let's Ryan inside. They share a kiss and Nick begins to take his jacket.
NICK- Come on everyone is excited to meet you.
INT. LIVING ROOM - CONTINUOUS
Nick leads Ryan to meet his family.
NICK- everyone this is Ryan.
Ryan does a nod and wave. They all begin to embrace him, including Nick's sister NAOMI 20s blonde and a complete KNOCKOUT. Ryan looks at her the longest.
RYAN-Do I know you?
She smiles in confusion shaking her head.

Ryan still looking at her believing he does.
NICK- Well Ryan dj's a-lot of parties and my sister here parties a lot so maybe that's why.

NICK- Well make yourself comfortable food is almost done.

EXT. FRONT OF NICKS MOTHERS HOUSE - MOMENTS LATER
Ryan is on the phone with Sterling pacing back and forth.
RYAN- Sterling Im telling you I dont forgot a face.
STERLING- I think you're looking way too deep into this.
RYAN- Im not! Im telling you I know this chick.
STERLING-But why would she say she doesn't know you?
RYAN- Maybe she's lying.
STERLING-(sarcastic)Yeah Ryan because I'm sure that would just make her day lying to say she doesn't remember somebody.
RYAN-Look Im not crazy.
STERLING- You're standing outside of your boyfriends house acting like Nancy Drew.
Ryan stops pacing and thinks.
RYAN-that is a little crazy.
Sterling laughs.
STERLING- just go back inside and enjoy dinner man.

Hazel, Sterling, and Teseana sit in the living. A football game is on the screen but only Sterling is watching it.
STERLING-Yes lets go!

Maya walks out of the kitchen.
MAYA-Oh girl relax, it's almost done.

MAYA-You know what, I'll make sure you eat first.
Teseana smiles Hazel rolls her eyes.
There's a knock at the door, Maya goes to answer it and its Mariah in TEARS.

Hazel and Sterling share a look.

Maya looks shocked. Mariah hugs her tight.

Nick's family sits at a huge table having dinner. Ryan is enjoying himself fitting in with the entire family.

They all laugh. Nick rubs his shoulder.
NOAMI- I made the stuffing...how do you like it?
Ryan looks across the table at her and she's looking at him with seductive eyes smiling.

Ryan looks at her confused and then looks at Nick for help.

Naomi smiles at him.

RYAN- Let's see it all started in 1996 when I was born, a snowy day in January.
The entire table laughs. Ryan looks confused.

INT. HAZEL'S APARTMENT- LIVING ROOM -DAY
Mariah and Maya sit on the sofa. Mariah crying as she's talking to Maya.

Mariah begins to wipe her tears.

Maya is trying to calm Hazel down. Christine and Teseana sit at the table watching.

INT. HAZEL'S APARTMENT - KITCHEN - CURRENT TIME
MAYA- Okay and you know I can't stand her either but she's going through something.
HAZEL- Why is that my problem? And last I checked you've been going through stuff and you can't go to her.
MAYA-(V.O) she's absolutely correct but ouch.
MAYA- I know but look she's here now...I'll entertain her and then she'll leave it's not like she's gonna stay for dinner or something.
Mariah bursts into the kitchen.
MARIAH- MJ...would you mind if I stayed for dinner? I don't really care about the food but that Sterling guy? He is soooo cute.
Hazel has a not so shocked smile and shakes her head.

Christine clears her throat.

Mariah smiles over at Sterling who sits on the couch watching the football game.
Mariah walks over and sits next to him.

Hazel looks at Maya. Maya is watching Mariah flirt with Sterling.

Teseana comes to the kitchen door.

Maya turns the timer off and puts on oven mitts and begins to take a dish out of the oven.
HAZEL- MJ you know how your sister is and if something happens between him and her you're gonna-
Maya slams the dish on the counter. Christine and Teseana look confused.
MAYA- I'm gonna what? I don't care.
HAZEL- Look your little "I don't care routine" is fine for the other six days out of the week but today it's not. That's the last person you want with Sterling.
MAYA- it isn't a routine...And I can't control everything, I'm barely controlling this thanksgiving dinner that I'm trying to have so can we please?
Hazel looks at her.
HAZEL- Okay.
Hazel walks out of the kitchen. Teseana follows her.
Christine walks over to Maya.

Maya laughs a little.

CHRISTINE- Thanksgiving is a very hard event in this family....thats why he travels away every year he thinks I don't know....but if you got him to stay for dinner...that says a lot.
This LANDS on Maya. She wasn't expecting it.

Maya walks into the living room. Mariah is still trying to get Sterling's attention as he watching the game.
Hazel and Teseana sit next to him. Hazel still upset.

MAYA- I didn't give up my apartment Mariah me and Steven broke up and then I lost my job...Hazel was nice enough to let me stay here rent free.
MARIAH- Oh...well imagine where you could stay if you actually paid rent.
MAYA-(V.O) the girl who has never paid rent a day in her life.
MAYA- Look...I get it you're gonna through a tough time with David....and it's plenty of food...I don't mind you staying here, but....
Mariah looks at her confused. Maya exhales.
MAYA- Sterling is kinda off limits.

MARIAH- Come on MJ you fall in love with different things at a time and then you give up on them. It's only a matter of time before this whole New York thing is next.
MAYA- No I like my life here...this isn't like DC...and Sterling is different.
MARIAH- Okay so you two are dating?
MAYA- No...but-
MARIAH- Exactly.
MAYA- (stern) Look I don't care what you think and I'm not asking,... I'm telling you he's off limits.
Mariah rolls her eyes.
MARIAH- Fine...if you gotta go through all of this trouble. I'll fall back.
MAYA- Thanks.
INT. DINING ROOM - MOMENTS LATER
The table is set and decorated perfectly Christine Hazel and Teseana are sit as Maya is bringing out dishes.
HAZEL-This looks so good MJ.
Maya smiles. The happiest we've seen her in a while.
MAYA- Thank you.
Maya phone buzzes the battery is dying.
HAZEL- girl charge your phone.
MAYA- I left my charger in the storage room. I'll get it after dinner.
HAZEL- that's a creepy storage room....I would just have to go buy a new charger.
Maya laughs.
MAYA- I'll go get Sterling and Mariah.
HAZEL- Maybe just Sterling.
Maya laughs and shakes her head.
INT. LIVING ROOM - CONTINUOUS
When Maya walks into the living room. Mariah is kissing Sterling.
MAYA- Seriously?
Sterling quickly pulls away and rushes over to Maya.
STERLING- Maya she kissed me...out of no where it was so random.
MARIAH- MJ don't go being all dramatic.
Maya looks at her Mariah.
MAYA- I asked you to do one thing.
Maya storms out. Sterling begins to go after her. Mariah grabs his arm.
MARIAH- She's just looking for attention let her cool off-
Sterling snatches away from her.
Mariah is confused not she to guys turning her down. Hazel storms out of the dining room.
HAZEL- What the hell did you do?
Mariah looks at her.
INT. STORAGE UNIT - MOMENTS LATER
Maya is in the storage room looking for her charger she has a box in the middle of the door to keep it from closing.
Sterling rushes in kicking the box out of the way and the door closes.
STERLING- Maya you have got to listen to me...I would never do something like that.
MAYA-(still looking) do something like what?
STERLING- kiss your sister.
Maya continues to dig through boxes.
MAYA- Everyone likes my sister Sterling....not shocking that you do too.
STERLING- But I don't.
Maya continues looking through boxes avoiding looking at him.
STERLING- Can you look at me?
MAYA- I'm trying to find my charger.
STERLING- Fuck your charger, Maya I'm talking to you.
Maya looks at him.
MAYA- What? It's okay you can do whatever you want I'm mad at my sister not you.
STERLING- she kissed me out of no where...and I'm not interested in your sister....half because she's your sister and the other half because how she makes you feel.
Maya looks at him.
STERLING- and add a little of she's annoying as hell on top of that too.
Maya laughs a little.
MAYA- She is...I'm sorry,
STERLING- You should be.
Maya hits him. Sterling laughs.
MAYA- you don't even know what I'm sorry about.
STERLING- I have a list, trust me that I'm sorry can go for a lot of things.
MAYA- I've told you about my sister before...she gets whatever and whoever she wants....and somehow I always feel like I'm the evil sister in cinderellas story.
Sterling looks at her.
MAYA- everyone always prefers at school at home and I was scared that you would too and that ....you fell for her....that scared me.
Sterling hugs her.
STERLING- I think I only have room for one MJ in my life.
Maya laughs and then she notices the door.
MAYA- Oh God We're stuck.
STERLING- Yeah you're stuck with me kid.
MAYA- No I mean the door...it locks automatically that's why I had the box against it.
STERLING- What?
MAYA- please tell me you have your cell phone.
STERLING- No, you?
MAYA- No.
STERLING- Fuck.
MAYA- Oh God...we're due by carbon monoxide.
Maya begins to slide down the to floor dramatically.
MAYA- I didn't even get to have a plate of my own Thanksgiving food.
STERLING- Maya.
Maya begins to panic grabbing her throat.
MAYA- Sterling...I can't breathe.
Sterling kneels down grabbing her hands.
STERLING- Maya you're in your head, you can breathe.
MAYA- I can't....if I die and you survive make sure my sister doesn't take home a to go plate.
STERLING- Maya.
MAYA-(dramatically) huh?
STERLING- We're gonna get out of here....this isn't gonna be the end of Maya and Sterling okay?
MAYA-(looking at him nodding) okay.
INT. NICKS MOTHERS HOUSE - DAY
Ryan has finished using the bathroom and is washing his hands.
There's a knock at the door.
RYAN- Someone's in-
Noami walks in and closes the door quietly.
Ryan raises his eyebrow.
RYAN- What are you-
She covers his mouth.
NAOMI- of course I remember you stupid.
She removes her hand.
RYAN- (proudly) I knew it.
She begins to touch on him. He moves back a little.
RYAN- Okay now that's my penis.
He grabs her hands.
RYAN- What are you doing?
NOAMI- I finally got us alone...have you missed me?
She begins to kiss him. Ryan pulls away
RYAN- Okay I definitely kissed you before.
NAOMI- and a lot of other things.
She tries to kiss him again being all over him.
RYAN- Your brother who I am in a relationship with is right down stairs.
NAOMI- So? I had you first.
Ryan smiles.
RYAN- when you put it that way.
She begins to kiss his neck.
RYAN- Wait no I really like your brother like a lot.
NAOMI- Seriously?
She tries to kiss him again. Nick walks in.
They both FREEZE.
NICK- oh you got to be kidding me.
RYAN- Okay this looks really bad but on the bright side....I know why your sister looked so familiar.
Nick glares at him.
RYAN- Okay...I'll see my way out.
Ryan attempts to leave and then stops and walks back towards the sink.
Naomi and Nick watch him.
RYAN- I didn't get to dry my hands.
He awkwardly grabs sheets of paper towels and it falls on the ground and begins to roll. He tries to pick it up but it just unravels more.
Nick grabs the rolls quickly.
NICK- Ryan just go.
Ryan looks at him sadly and leaves.
INT. HAZEL'S APARTMENT - DAY
Hazel is grilling Mariah. Teseana holds her back. Christine watches the entire thing.
HAZEL- What the hell is wrong with you?
MARIAH- What's wrong with me? MJ is the one who ran out of here like some kid.
HAZEL- You're either really slow or excuse Ms. Christine, a bitch....and I'm willing to bet on the latter.
CHRISTINE- you get a pass.
Hazel nods.
MARIAH- you people are crazy.
HAZEL- Trust me, this is calm...I'm no where near crazy out of respect for your sister....do you hear me? Respect for your sister....who had to move to another state to find happiness because you ruin everything for her.
MARIAH- What? I'm not the reason for her being unhappy.
HAZEL- You're right but you're apart of it. Why do you always feel the need to compete with her or to try and make her feel so small....fyi she's not. It's a reason why she has people to run to and you had to run to her.
Mariah looks at her she's hit hard.
HAZEL- And even after all the things you've done she was still trying to find a way to be there for you even thought you don't deserve it, sister or not your ass would be sitting in the hall in tears if it was me. She was looking forward to today until you came.
Hazel shakes her head and goes to her room. Teseana follows her.
Mariah holds her head down a bit.
CHRISTINE- do you have any idea where your sister could've gone?
MARIAH- No...(embarrassed) as you can see we're not really that close....or close at all...so I um....I wouldn't know.
CHRISTINE- Is MJ your only sister?
Mariah nods.
MARIAH- my only sibling.
CHRISTINE- Life is too short to have this little animosity thing with your sister. Be kind to each other in the long run you're all you got.
Mariah looks at her. Ryan bursts in throwing his jacket on the coach.
RYAN- Hazel MJ Sterling family meeting now.
MARIAH- Family meeting?
RYAN- Yeah you know when families meet? (Pauses now realizing) I know you.
MARIAH- no you don't.
RYAN- I do...aw man....I have a real problem.
Hazel and Teseana walk out from the back.
HAZEL- What are you yelling about fool?
Ryan smiles.
RYAN- there's my family.
MARIAH- Y'all all are really close...MJ hasn't even lived out here long.
HAZEL- That's what happens when you're not a witch.
MARIAH- What is your issue?!
HAZEL- Once you stop making an issue for your sister then I won't have an issue with you.
RYAN- Oh thank God that's where I know you from...you're MJ's sister. Whew I thought I had sex with you.
Christine looks at him confused.
RYAN- Sorry Ma...can I call you Ma?
Hazel laughs.
INT. STORAGE UNIT - DAY
Maya still in the middle of panicking and Sterling is trying to calm her down.
STERLING-Maya you have to relax.
MAYA-(panicking) You don't think I thought of that?!
Sterling rolls his eyes.
STERLING- Maybe if you stopped with the attitude you could relax.
Maya shoots a look at him Sterling swallows.
STERLING- Okay...you wanna know why I always leave on Thanksgiving?
Maya looks at him still panicking.
STERLING- Came home for thanksgiving one year in college...everything was good until my Dad said he had to leave said it was a work thing...I was confused because Thanksgiving was like a big thing for us like this could be the one day where work was last on the agenda...and that's a when I found out he was seeing another woman.
Maya looks at him with softness in her eyes. She's not panicking anymore.
MAYA- On thanksgiving?
STERLING- And my mom she just pretended like it didn't happen like it was okay....she just went on cooking and making sure everyone else was having a good even made him a plate.
MAYA- (concerned) And that's the last time you came home.
Sterling nods.
MAYA- Sterling you have to forgive your mom...she's the one that got hurt....and way more than you.
STERLING- It's not that I can't forgive him....I don't know how to even start that type of conversation. I'm not good at that type of stuff.
Maya looks at him confused. Sterling looks back at her confused.
STERLING- What?
MAYA- You do realize this is what like our fourth serious conversation we ever had?
Sterling sucks his teeth.
STERLING- No it's not.
Maya laughs.
MAYA- Yes it is. I keep telling you you're a softy Uptown.
Sterling rolls his eyes.
STERLING- No I'm not you're just always around so I have no choice but to talk to you.
Maya nods not believing him.
MAYA- Mmhm.
STERLING- Okay you gotta tell me something now.
MAYA- No I don't think so I don't just be telling just anyone my business.
Sterling laughs.
STERLING- Yeah okay.
Maya sighs and looks at him.
MAYA-I wanted to have my own Thanksgiving dinner because I went from feeling like an outcast at my own house to spending it with Steven's family and him always controlling everything.
Sterling looks at her, listening.
MAYA- All I really wanted was to have a normal family with y'all I guess since y'all are my family now.
Sterling has a half smile.
STERLING- I'm your family?
MAYA- Oh no everybody except you.
They both look at each other and laugh.
STERLING- that probably is a bad thing anyway.
They look at each other.
MAYA- Why?
STERLING- Maya I don't-
Ryan BURSTS in.
RYAN- Here they are!
Maya and Sterling both look disappointed.
STERLING- of course.
CHRISTINE- Oh MJ you're okay.
Christine hugs her.
STERLING-(confused) what about me your actual child?
CHRISTINE- Oh Bubba I'm happy you're okay too.
Hazel bursts into laughs.
HAZEL-Bubba?!
Maya laughs.
MAYA- That's what I said.
Sterling looks at Maya. She stops laughing.
MAYA- I need to go take Miss Anne her plate so...bye.
Maya leaves quickly.
INT. STERLINGS APARTMENT- NIGHT
Sterling walks inside Christine sits on the sofa in the living room.
STERLING- Ryan is over at Hazel's telling the long story version of what happened at Nicks....again.
Christine laughs.
STERLING- but I wanted to talk to you.
CHRISTINE- oh you do?
Sterling sits next to her.
STERLING- Ma...I'm sorry for not coming home....and I'm sorry for going so long without communicating with you.
Christine looks at him.
STERLING- I guess I was holding on to some hurt for a lot of things and I wanted to pretend I wasn't so that avoiding you too.
Christine has a half smile.
CHRISTINE- I'm just happy you feel open enough to tell me that....I missed you so much, my baby boy.
She hugs him.
STERLING- I missed you too....but ma I'm not the baby-
Christine hugs him tighter.
CHRISTINE- We're not talking about your brother right now.
Sterling laughs.
Christine pulls away from him.
CHRISTINE- And I really like MJ.
STERLING- You do? i couldn't tell from you hugging her before me not that long ago.
Christine laughs.
CHRISTINE- I can tell she makes you happy.
STERLING- Yeah...she does...but the last few times I tried to tell her...something always gets in the way.
CHRISTINE- When it's the right time it'll be right time. And you're at the perfect sport now being her friend....you don't want to rush things and it's ruined.
Sterling looks at her.
STERLING- Yeah.
INT. HAZEL'S APARTMENT- KITCHEN - NIGHT
Maya is packing a to go plate and puts it in a grocery bag handing it to Mariah.
MARIAH- after all of that...you're still going to give me something to go with?
MAYA- Not like I'm gonna eat it all....so.
MARIAH- MJ...I'm sorry.
Maya looks surprised.
MAYA- (V.O) oh my God Hazel beat her ass while I was gone.
MARIAH- and not just about to today.....but for um everything.
MAYA- I did ruin your engagement party.
MARIAH- That was cake was dumb as hell.
Maya laughs.
MAYA- It was over the top....but very sweet in the middle....kinda like you.
MARIAH- you think I'm sweet?
MAYA- Not really that just sounds nice.
Mariah laughs.
MARIAH- you're so good at that.
MAYA- what being funny?
MARIAH- absolutely not.
They both laugh.
MARIAH- But no just the way you can just roll with the punches no matter what...and you remain yourself. I try so hard to be this and trust me it takes a lot of work to look this good....but I would trade places with you in hurry.
MAYA- What? Why would you trade places with me? You're way more out together than I am.
MARIAH- You have a dream career, a passion that you been working towards since a kid and you have friends that love you and that Sterling guy wouldn't shut up about you....thats actually why I kissed him...wanted him to shut up.
MAYA- What?
MARIAH- Did I mention how sorry I am and that I'm gonna try to change by the next you see me.
Maya glares at him. Mariah gets a nervous smile.
MARIAH- and I'll make sure that will be a very long time from now.
Maya shoots her a look and then hugs her.
MAYA- Make sure you let mom taste all of that food before you tell her that it's mine and then record it and send it to me.
Mariah laughs.
MARIAH- I will....and MJ.
Maya looks at her.
MARIAH- I'm really happy to see you happy....I meant it.
Maya smiles and hugs her one last time.
INT. HALL WAY - MOMENTS LATER
Mariah is leaving as Sterling is walking back across the hall. He freezes.
MARIAH- I'm sorry about kissing you.
Sterling nods.
STERLING- hopefully the next we meet it's under better conditions max
MARIAH- Yeah....hopefully next time around it's me ruining MJ's cake.
Sterling looks confused and then realizes and smiles.
Mariah leaves.
INT. HAZEL'S APARTMENT- CONTINUOUS
Sterling walks inside. Hazel and Maya sit in the living room on the sofa.
Ryan pulls a game of monopoly out of the closet.
RYAN- y'all wanna play monopoly now?
He begins to put the game board on the coffee table and begins to set it up.
HAZEL- didn't you lose all the pieces?
Maya laughs.
RYAN- No....okay I lost the shoe but I replace it with an ear ring.
MAYA- Hey that's my ear ring.
RYAN- It is?
Maya hits him.
HAZEL- I want to be the race car!
MAYA- Top Hat!
STERLING- Thimble.
Hazel and Maya look at him confused.
MAYA- Why the thimble?
HAZEL- Right.
STERLING- Damn is it not a monopoly piece?
Hazel laughs.
RYAN- Wait you know what would go good with this game?
STERLING- real money?
RYAN- No sweet potato pie....and some ice cream.
HAZEL- Ryan....dont touch my ice cream!
Ryan runs into the kitchen and Hazelnut goes after him.
HAZEL- this is why you can't stay here more than a hour!
Maya and Sterling laugh at them.
MAYA- Hey.
Sterling looks at her.
MAYA- earlier you were gonna something about you don't want to something.
STERLING- I was?
Maya shoots him a look.
MAYA- don't piss me off.
Sterling laughs and then grabs her hand.
STERLING- What I wanted to say to you Maya James.....
Maya looks at him.
MAYA-(V.O) oh why is my heart racing. I hate him.
STERLING- The thing I'm most thankful for this year, is you.
Maya looks at him.
STERLING- Your friendship means a lot to me and I don't take it for granted....I really hope you know that.
Sterling kisses her on the cheek. Maya is frozen.
STERLING- are you gonna say something?
MAYA- (nervously) Happy Thanksgiving.
MAYA-(V.O) Happy thanksgiving?! That's all you say?! You can run your mouth about anything else.
MAYA- and I actually do like the thimble...haha.
Sterling looks at her confused.
Ryan and Hazel run back into the living room. Ryan holding a slice of pie and ice cream. They take their seats across from Maya and Sterling.
MAYA- (awkward) Yay everyone is back let's play the monopoly game.
Hazel looks at her confused.
MAYA- (nervously) happy thanksgiving everyone!
