Angst, Fluff

🎸

"C'mon babe, let's go."
Izzy tugged on June's arm.

"But I wanna stay, Iz!"
June whined back.

"Baby, we need to go home."
He said patiently.

"But why?"

"Baby, it's 2 a.m. and I think we've both had enough to drink."
Izzy said calmly, trying his best to stay patient with his girlfriend.

Izzy was a patient and quiet person. He didn't blow up at little things and really didn't let anything bother him. But right now, he is beyond annoyed with June and the way she acts when she's had one (a few) too many. She becomes a giggling mess, feels like she always has to touch him, and is borderline childish at times.
Typically, Izzy finds these things about her endearing, cute, and sweet; he understands that it's just part of her personality. Right now, though, in his tired state of mind, everything she's doing is rubbing him the wrong way.

"June, baby, c'mon, let's head home."
He practically begged, pulling her off of the dance floor.

"Just w'na dance, Iz. Why won't you dance with me?"
She pouted, looking up at him through her eyelashes. Under normal circumstances, Izzy would bend over backward to get the pout off her face, even if that meant dancing a time or two. But right now, he can't think of a worse punishment.

"Honey, everyone else is leaving. See?"
He motioned to all of the empty chairs and other patrons leaving the wedding.

"They must not like to dance. Please, baby, dance with me?"
She slurs, leaning her body weight against him.

"June, we're leaving."
He says sternly, grabbing her hand and pulling her towards the coat rack.

"You're no fun."
She drunkenly giggles.

Izzy grumbled under his breath and it seemed to slightly sober up June.

"Izzy, a-are you mad at me?"
She asks quietly, putting her head on his shoulder.

"No, June. Just put your jacket on, okay?"
Izzy sighs, not wanting to upset her.

"But you look mad. I didn't do anything did I?"
June asked, still slurring slightly.

"No, baby. C'mon, get your hoodie on so we can go home."
He says calmly.

"But-"

"Christ, June, just put on your fucking hoodie."
Izzy snapped harshly, causing June to take a step back and tears to gather on her waterline.

"I-I'm sorry."
She sniffled, putting her hoodie on with shaking hands.

"I'm sorry, Sweetheart. I shouldn't have snapped at you like that. I'm just tired and ready to go home."
Izzy sighed, wrapping his arms around June, letting her sniffle quietly into his shoulder.

"Can we go home?"
She asked sadly, her words still slightly slurred.

"Yeah, baby, let's go home."
He smiled slightly, grabbing her hand and leading them to the car.

"Wait! I left my drink inside, Iz."
June suddenly remembers.

"Baby, I think you've had enough."
Izzy reminds her softly.

"But I really liked that one."
She pouted, crossing her arms across her chest.

"You can have more tomorrow when you're a little bit more sober. You're done for tonight."
He explained.

"No! I want another one now."
She slurred, turning on her heels to go back inside.

"June Isbell, we are going home."
Izzy snaps, grabbing her by the waist causing June to start squirming.

"I want my drink!"
She shouts, thrashing around in his embrace.

"Stop, June, we're going home; you're drunk."
He says impatiently, setting her down by the passenger side door of their car.

"You're a meanie."
June huffs, her face morphed into an angry scowl.

"Get in the car, June."
Izzy says tiredly, trying his best not to snap at her.

"No, you're being mean and I don't like you."
She drunkenly sasses.

"Sweetheart, baby, you have to get in the car. Please, honey, I'm tired and we need to go home."
He says calmly, trying to coax her into the car.

"No."
June says defiantly.

"Fine."
Izzy says before going around the front end of the car and getting into the driver's seat. He started the engine before placing his hand on the drive shaft.

"Wait!"
She yelled, quickly getting into the passenger seat.

"That wasn't so hard now was it?"

"You're being mean!"
June snapped, crossing her arms in front of her chest.

"Put your seatbelt on."
Izzy said quietly, slowly pulling out of the parking lot.

"I don't want to."
She whines.

"June, you have to put it on. It's late and we have to drive an hour home still. I need you to be safe and put your seatbelt on."
Izzy explains, speaking gently to her as if she were a child.

"No."
June refuses, sticking her tongue out at him.

"Stop acting like a fucking child and put on your damn seatbelt!"
Izzy snapped loudly, causing June's bottom lip to tremble.

June silently complied, trying to keep her sniffles soft as tears spilled down her cheeks. She turned away from Izzy and looked out of the window before falling asleep.

Izzy, oblivious to the fact that he hurt his wife's feelings, looked over at June and smiled softly.

·

Throughout the week, Izzy notices something different about June. It's a small change, but to Izzy, it seems enormous. She's quiet and reserved. Izzy doesn't come home to find her singing to the radio or her favorite Disney movies. She's been reading, which is something she's never liked to do because she has a short attention span and can't focus enough to enjoy a book. But today takes the cake.

Before June, Izzy's apartment was bland. It was furnished with neutral-color furniture and looked barely lived in. But once Izzy invited June in to live with him, everything changed. She added blankets, throw pillows, and random-colored candles everywhere. She put up picture frames with cute little sayings and even a picture or two.

So when Izzy came home from the studio and found his apartment bland and bare, he knew something was really wrong. He looked at the end of the couch where there was usually a throw blanket because June got cold and noticed there was no blanket. Izzy realized there were also no sequin-covered throw pillows resting on his couch or recliner. What made it heartache, though, was when he found the picture frame that once held a Polaroid of the two of them empty.
The Polaroid was one June had taken herself when the two of them were having a movie night. She had on a Beauty and the Beast sweater, which was probably his favorite part of the picture; she was unapologetically herself. He picked up the empty frame and decided that this was the straw that broke the camel's back. He was going to find out what was wrong with June.

"June, baby, come down here please."
He called the picture frame still in his hand.

"Hi, baby, how was the studio?"
She asked, walking into the living room wearing a tight black dress.

Don't get Izzy wrong, he loves admiring her and loves it when she feels confident enough to wear a dress like the one she's in now. But now, he feels as if she's wearing it to prove something, and he doesn't want her to do that either.

"Baby-"

"I was thinking we could go out for dinner."
June cut him off, wrapping her arms around his neck, and pressing a kiss to his cheek.

"I don't-"

"We could go to that sushi place you love."
She said in a sing-song voice.

"No, June, stop it."
Izzy shook his head.

"What's the matter, Iz? Do you feel okay?"
She asked with a furrowed brow.

"I'm not okay, okay?"
He said frustratedly.

"Izzy, baby, what's the matter?"

"Where are the couch pillows? And the blankets? And why is there no picture in this frame?"
Izzy rushed out holding up the picture frame, throwing what felt like a million unanswered questions into the open.

"Oh, those silly things, I- um, I put them away. I thought tonight we could take a new picture for the frame."
June shakily explained.

"Baby, how come you put everything away and what was wrong with the old picture?"
Izzy asked, confused by her sudden change of heart.

"I just thought it looked better before, y'know, I made it look childish."
She mumbled, looking down at her heel-clad feet.

That's when everything hit Izzy. The pillows, the blankets, the picture, it all went back to the night after the wedding. When he'd foolishly let his tired state of mind conflict with his feelings and in turn he'd hurt June's feelings so much, she'd begun to doubt herself.

"That's what this is about? Y'think I think you're childish? That these things you put around our home are childish?"
Izzy questioned with wide eyes.

"You're the one who said it."
June mumbled, the bare walls catching her attention.

"I- I didn't mean to hurt your feelings, June. Baby-"

"No, Iz, it's fine. I mean, I get it. We're married and I shouldn't litter the apartment with things for teenagers. You want someone more mature and I can-"

"Enough with all of that bullshit, you're talking right now. I don't think you're childish and I never have. I don't want you to be more mature, June. You're the perfect mix of both, baby."
Izzy said sincerely, moving to wrap his arms around June.

"I'm so sorry, baby. I- I didn't- I would never hurt you on purpose, Sweetheart."
Izzy whispered into her ear, his eyes beginning to glisten with tears.

"I didn't know what to think. I- I just thought maybe, may-be if I wasn't so childish, t-then you'd be happier with me."
June whimpered, tears leaking over her waterline.

"Baby, you're perfect for me just the way you are. I love all of your colorful pillows and blankets, and I love that picture because you look so happy in it. You're fucking perfect June, and I'll keep reminding you as long as I need to."
Izzy said, kissing June's forehead.

"Please don't ever say something like that again. If I'm doing something wrong or annoying, please tell me nicely. I didn't like that."
June said honestly, looking up at Izzy.

"I promise I will. I love you so much, baby."
He said, pecking her lips softly.

"I love you too. Can we go to bed now?"

"Baby, it's not even 10 yet."
Izzy laughs.

"I know, but I'm sleepy and this dress is so fucking uncomfortable. Like I need to get out of it, right now."
She says honestly, tugging the straps of her dress off of her shoulders.

"I think you might need a little help getting that dress off, babe."
Izzy winked, moving his hands to rest on her ass.

"Yeah, you g'na take it off me?"
June smirked, looking at Izzy through her eyelashes.

"Go upstairs while I lock up."
Izzy rasped.

"Dress on or off?"
June asked.

"I'm gonna take that fucking thing off of you."
Izzy practically growled, kissing her deeply.

"Better hurry and lock up."
She teased, pulling away and heading upstairs.

"Be up in a few."
Izzy smiled, leaving a playful smack on her ass.

"I'll be waiting."
June called, heading up the stairs.

Needless to say, Izzy and June did a lot of making up.
