Owen POV
I went home to sleep, but couldn't really sleep, I waited until Carlos' text saying TK was out of surgery and the doctor had say everything went well, so I head back to the hospital, Tommy who was "taking care of me" drives me there, we where arriving to the recovery room when nurses and doctors comes out of the room with Carlos in a gurney, he looked pale, and so out of it.
What was going on?
"What?—- Carlos?" I say getting closer but nurses pushing me back "what's going on with him?"
"He just collapsed, we're taking him to the ER" says a nurse
I don't know what to do, how is that posible
Just collapsed?
What?
When I decide to follow the nurses I hear what just makes my heart beat faster and the feeling of confusion intensifying
TK's scream
"AAAAAHHHHH" i can hear it like I'm by his side so I just run to his room.
Tommy going behind me
When I enter the room I can see TK crying, sweating, nurses and doctors around him, but I don't care I run to his side, he sees me
"Dad?" He says gritting his teeth "Dad, it hurts, Help"
"Hey TK, I— I ... wh- what hurts?"
"Please help, make it stop" I can see he's almost going unconscious
I look to the doctor "What's wrong?"
"HELP!"
"We are waiting on the results but there might be an infection"
"AAAAAAHHHH"
"Tk, I'm here try to relax, breathe with me" I try to make him relax but I'm shaking, I'm terrified, I don't know what's going on
"Dad, please make it stop!, STOP, MAKE IT STOP, Stop, please" he begs to me but im useless I can't do anything for him
And then he just throws up, they put him on his side, he's dry heaving, nothing coming out of his mouth. The effort is to much so he losses consciousness.
"Is he, I , Is he okay?" I asked the doctor trying to take a breath
"We are sedating him, we are taking him to surgery, we have to see what cause the infection, we'll be updating you" the doctor explains while they prepare TK
I'm still not able to catch my breath.
Everything just went so bad so fast.
What about Carlos, what if the infection is really strong, what if I lose him for real this time.
My vision gets blurry now and I can feel tears falling in my hands, I'm on the floor, how did I get here, oh god, I can't breathe, I'm alone, I'll end up alone.
Gwyn will never forgive me, I'm sorry, I couldn't save our baby boy, I'm sorry, I'm so sorry.
Something suddenly shakes me and Tommy is in front of me, her face full of concern.
"Owen!, Owen! can you hear me?"
I nod
The room is alone, where's TK?
"I , TK.... I'm sorry" I say but there's no air in my lungs
"Hey hey hey, look at me!" She shakes me again
But I can't really focus, it doesn't matter anymore, TK's dying, my boy. I can't breath, I'm gonna die too, I'm sorry I'm sorry
"Owen... at me .... Breathe" Tommy is talking but I can't really hear it, the feeling of dizziness hitting me hard
"Come on !!!" She says
"I *gasp* ca—-can't *gasp*"
"Hey, you're ok, let's take a deep breath" she says grabbing my face "1...2...3..." I try to follow her, but the coughing doesn't let me, I can't take a breath, I'm gonna die
"Hey let's try again, ok?" She says calmly
We continue with the same routine I don't know for how long until I can finally breathe, I feel so exhausted and super scared but Tommy is there with a glass of water, there is a nurse I hadn't notice.
When I feel better- ish they help me up
"Are you better?" Tommy asks me
I just nod
"What do you think if we go to check on Carlos?" She asks
I almost can't breathe again, but Tommy holds me.
"Ok, yeah, we should check on him"
When we arrive to the ER, I get close to the reception
"Hi, I'm looking for Carlos Reyes, he was brought from upstairs"
"Hi , of course let me check"she searches in her computer " ok, he's in an emergency surgery"
"What?"
"Can we know why?" Tommy asks
" Are you close family?"
" I'm his father in law" I say
"Right, he came in because he collapsed, the doctors were running tests and he had seizures, so they're doing the emergency surgery to see what's wrong" she explains
I don't know what to think, all of this feels so unreal
"Can you keep updating us anything?" Tommy says
"Yes, Is there someone you can contact?"
"Yeah, we'll be back" I say
We sit in the waiting room, for Carlos and TK, I decide to call Carlos' parents
"Bueno?" Andrea answers
"Hi Andrea"
"Hi Owen, how's TK doing?"
" He's still in surgery, uhm they found an infection, so they got to see what's causing it"
"Dios mío, Owen don't worry, he will get better, I don't know why Carlitos hadn't told me that"
"Tha- that's why I'm calling, I uhm, I don't know what happened but Carlos is in surgery too" I say my voice breaking
"What?, what?, dios santo, qué pasó!?"
" They say he collapsed and that he was having seizures, it could be one of the side effects of the concussion, but I don't know, he was taking care of himself right?"
" Ay madre mía, Owen don't say that, I'm on my way"
"Andrea I'm sorry, please tell Gabriel to come with you, we'll try to get updates"
"Yes ok, I'll see you"
"Ok, drive safe"
"Thanks Owen"
I end the call and Tommy is not there, I look for her and she's with the nurse
Just when I was arriving where they were standing they finish the conversation
I talked to Tommy on the way back "What did she tell you?"
"About Carlos" she says
"What's wrong whit him?"
"His brain was bleeding so the seizures are temporary, the surgery went well, they have him in a coma again so the inflammation goes down and then wait for him to wake up" she says, her voice sounding so exhausted
I don't even know how many hours we'd been awake.
"Oh my god, so we're back at the beginning, we should go to his room"
She nods
I informed Andrea and Gabriel
Seeing Carlos like that again almost causes me another panic attack
He has a bandage in his head, tubes coming out of him, I touch his hand and he's cold, so I ask for blankets.
Andrea and Gabriel arrive some time later, we hugged, the same feeling of defeat around everyone.
I decide to block some things and moments, it's just hard, and I can't with everything, but still I'm not on the other side, I can't feel as bad as them.
TK's doctor interrupts me from my thoughts
"Hi" I said getting up fast, I get dizzy for a second, and I remember I haven't eat.
"Owen, Tyler is out of surgery, the infection is being treated, he's gonna have fever for a few days but it's part of the process, we'll be taking care of him, he's awake if you want to go" he explains
" Thank you, yeah I'd like to see him"
"Of course, go on"
I got to his room, Tommy stayed with Carlos
As the doctor said TK was awake, not active, just awake, he was laying in an almost a flat bed.
"Hey son"
"Dad..." he says, his voice so raspy because of the crying, shouting, vomiting and the intubation
"Don't talk, here have some water"
I start to caress his hair " how are you feeling?"
"Better... Dad I have never felt something like that *coughing* I —"
"Take it easy son, you want some more water?"
He nods
"You have an infection, that's why the pain was so strong" I explain
"Is that why.." he clears his throat "he's not here?, Carlos did I scared him away?" He says so tired
"No TK" I don't know how o explain it " Carlos, uhm he's not doing good"
"What do you mean?"
"He collapsed, he had some seizures" his face turning scared "the doctors induced coma so that the inflammation goes down but he's gonna get better ok?, we know that"
"It— is it my fault?" He says a few tears coming from his eyes, just how he just to do it when he was a kid
"No, why would it be your fault?"
"I'm stressing everyone, I think he had a seizure the other day, I should have say something" he says crying
"No, no hey look at me ok, he's gonna get better and you are too, come here" I said hugging him "why do you think he had a seizure?"
"We were just talking and he just stopped and he didn't answer me he was just looking at nothing, I— I should have... oh my god, I'm sorry"
"Relax, it's not you're fault, he's going to be okay and so are you ok?
"Dad, I'm sorry"
"Hey hey hey, you've got nothing to apologize, just relax and try to rest"
"I want to go... I have to see him, I want to go ... home" he's really tired, and sad
I just hug him
"You just have to get over this infection my boy" i say as we hug
He nods, getting sleepy
"Sleep my boy"
I can help the couple of tears that come out of my eyes.
Some time later the doctor comes to check on TK.
"Hi, how's he doing?" He asks reading something from the chart
"He's been asleep, he's exhausted"
"He's gonna be like that until the infection is gone" He checks his leg and the wound " it's looking better, as soon as he gets rid of the infection he can go home, the physical therapy can be addressed or we can find a rehabilitation center, it is up to you"
"Those are good news, thank you"
" I also recommend a therapist, he has been through a lot and I know he had some issues in the past"
"Yeah, thank you doctor, truly"
I feel better, we had some good news but still a rough night, TK had a very high fever, he threw up twice but better and I'm afraid to feel relief , because everything can go so bad so fast.
