Last night I heard my own heart beating,
Sounded like footsteps on my stairs,

Madelyn was laying on Peyton's bed while she and Brooke talked when Madelyn's phone rang.
"Hello?" she answered. Her two friends glanced over to her. "Haley, slow down. What's wrong?" she asked. "Okay," Madelyn jumped from the bed, urgently grabbing her bag, waving her friends to follow.
"Madelyn what's wrong?" Brooke asked.
"Lucas. There's been an accident," Madelyn explained, "We need to get to the hospital."

Brooke, Madelyn, and Peyton ran into the waiting room and spotted Keith and Karen.
"Keith," Brooke cried. "Keith is he okay?"
"Oh, honey, we don't know yet," Keith told her.
"I was supposed to see him tonight," Brooke said. "He was supposed to come over after the airport."
"Hey Karen," Madelyn greeted quietly, pulling the mother in for a hug. She leaned back and looked to her friend. "These are my friends; Brooke, Lucas's girlfriend," she introduced. "And this Peyton."
"Who's here for Lucas Scott?" a nurse spoke up.
"I'm his mother. Is my son okay?" Karen asked.
"He's stable and in recovery."
"Uh, could you just give us a sec, girls," Keith turned to them. Peyton nodded, wrapping her arms around Brooke and Madelyn and walking away.

Madelyn sat in silence in the waiting room. She couldn't bring herself to leave, telling Brooke to go see him without her.
"Hey," Peyton sat next to her. "What's going through your head?"
"I don't want this to be the ending of the story," Madelyn said simply.
"What do you mean?"
"I'm falling for him, P. He's dating my best friend and I'm falling for him. It seems I can only write songs about him. And- and I just can't help but thinking about kissing him again."
"Wait, again?"
"He kissed me at the river court after that night I sang at the cafe," Madelyn explained. "Then again in the hall at school the other day." She put her head in her hands. "God I'm an awful person. He's laying there in the hospital bed with my best friend next to him holding his hand and all I can think about is wanting to kiss him again," she cried.
Peyton ran her hand down her back. "You're not an awful person Maddie. You can't help your feelings," Peyton reassured.
I know people change and these things happen,

"Hey Luke," Madelyn sat down in the chair by his bed. "It looks like you're doing alright," she took his hand.
She listened to the beeping of the heart monitor for a moment, drawing a mess of shapes on the back of his hand.
"I've been writting a new song. I was sitting in the waiting room building up the nerve to come in here so I was trying to put stuff into words."
"It uh, it's called If This Was A Movie. I don't have much of it done but I have part of it done. So..."
She started singing softly, "Come back, come back, come back to me-e. Like you would, you would, if this was a movie.
Stand in the rain outside 'till I came out," Madelyn softly smiled.
"It's a nice song," Karen said, walking into the room. "I've been singing to him too. You write that?"
"Uh, yeah. I wrote it in the waiting room," Madelyn explained.
"Wow, that's fast," Karen pointed out, sitting in the other chair.
"Yeah, I have had some inspiration lately," Madelyn looked toward Lucas. "I've been writting songs in hope of making an album," she stopped herself, "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to me talking about myself right now."
"No, no it's okay. It's a nice distraction," Karen motioned for her to continue.
"Well, Haley had this idea to do an open mic night at the cafe a few weeks ago and I decided to sing. And it seems that there was a recording scout in the cafe that night and he offered me some studio time," She said with a slight smile on her face.
"That's great Madelyn, I'm proud of you," Karen said.
"Thank you," Madelyn softly nodded at her.

He was awake. Lucas was finally awake.
When she approached his room he was awake and alone.
"Hey Angel," he greeted her with a soft smile.
"Hey," she furrowed her brows, leaning out the hallway and looked around, "Where is everyone?"
"Home, getting food, I finally convinced my mom to go home and shower and sleep," he explained.
"That's good. She was exhausted," she sat down on the edge of his bed.
"So how is it that in the time I was out you wrote a whole song already?" he asked. Madelyn slightly laughed.
"So you could hear me. Nice," Madelyn nodded.
"So how does it go? The rest of it?" he asked.
"You really wanna hear it? Now?" she asked, running her fingers through her hair.
"Yeah, obviously," Laughed.
"Fine," she sat up straighter and glanced off toward the wall behind him. He placed a reassuring hand on her thigh and sent her a soft smile. Taking a deep breath, she started to sing.
