LILY AND STEVE WERE PERFECT for each other. They shared the same sense of humour, enjoyed the same hobbies, and had been best friends since childhood before even becoming an official couple.
Steve knew Lily's favourite candy was Reese's pieces, and she knew his favourite thing in the world (aside from her) was Farrah Fawcett hairspray. They'd shared the same perfect idea of High School, with Steve on the basketball team and Lily being cheer captain, both having each other's backs until the end of time.
They'd known everything about each other. Every flaw, every beauty, every secret — how could they have not? They'd grown up together, from play dates being arranged by their parents from the age of four, right until the end of middle school, when they were well and truly in love.
At least, that was what their idea of love was when they were young and naive.
So how could something so pure collapse to pieces so hastily?
Lily still can't tell you the answer to that, for she does not know herself. What she does know is that Steve joined High School, and when she joined a year later, he was an entirely different person.
Still, she had indeed become cheer captain, and Steve had indeed become a star basketball player on the Hawkins High team. She knows that everything she and Steve had planned on doing when they were older and in High School had become true — only, they did not do any of it together.
And now, all she can feel when she sees the Harrington boy is a sick feeling in her stomach and a broken heart held together with loss and loathing, poisoning what once was adoration.
They are nothing more than strangers, now. Strangers with memories that feel as though they are from an entirely different lifetime. Memories that feel as though they don't even belong to Lily, herself.
But — with all the strange things that begin to occur in Hawkins, Steve starts to wonder whether rekindling his lost love with Lily after so many years could really seem that bizarre.
Lily, on the other hand? Well, she'd rather fight a demodog (whatever that is, because she's new to all this shit).
