I never thought
I'd be born in world
Filled with so much hate
And misunderstanding
I never thought
I'd lose my first best friend in life
Over the color of my skin
And the lack of color on hers
I never thought
The boys in elementary school
Would call me names,
"Some jumble of color."
I never thought
I'd meet a teacher that cared
About me for my mind
Not my skin or race
I never thought
My sister would have to call 911
Because unfair treatment
Escalates quickly
I never thought
I'd switch schools
And no one cared of my race
So I wasn't afraid to expand more
I never thought
I would find best friends
That didn't leave me
No matter what
I never thought
I could feel so strongly
About someone
Of the same gender as I
I never thought
They would make it legal
For me to marry whoever,
Of any gender
I never thought
I would grow up in a world
Where everyone could slowly
Accept and evolve
To the changing world around them.
