[ one look, dark room
meant just for you
time moved too fast
you play it back ]

biana glanced across the graduation hall shyly, teal eyes lingering on a figure shrouded in dark shadows in one corner of the dark room. tam song. her eternal crush. he was fidgeting with his black grad robe uncomfortable, his lips turned upwards in a forced smile as his sister fixed his grad cap. his silver eyes roamed across the room, until they locked with hers.

she froze at the contact, a blush rising to her cheeks. almost immediately, biana averted her teal eyes, and ducked to hide her flaming face. tam frowned from across the room, and biana mentally chided herself: stupid, stupid, stupid! why had she done that?

and then, "farewell class of 2020!" cheers arose from every corner of the room, jerking biana from her thoughts; had they really, actually, graduated? as she cheered with the rest of her class, her mind flashed back to the four years she had spent at foxfire high. it seemed like just months ago she had walked through the metal doors of their high school for the first time. and, yet, today she were graduating.

time had really gone by too fast.

[ buttons on a coat
light-hearted joke
no proof, not much
but you saw enough ]

tam could not stop fidgeting with the velvet-covered buttons of his tuxedo. a faint blush graced his pale cheeks. just across the room, by the punch table, was the beauty known as biana vacker. she was the girl everyone loved, who other girls both envied and praised, who the guys— the guys interested in girls— fell to their knees for. and she was his eternal crush.

he couldn't help but notice how ethereal she looked in her lavender prom dress and gleaming silver jewelry. her teal eyes twinkled as she laughed at something one of her friends had said. almost mechanically, tam's legs started to move. one step, then another, and another. and then, he was standing right in front of biana amberly vacker.

"um, hey," he said, and then internally cringed. why was he so stupid? anything would be better that saying that!

"hey." to his surprise, biana beamed at him. beamed. at him. at tam. it was as if all the breath had been knocked out his body. her smile had already been enchanting enough, but now it was directed at him. it was enough to make his heart stop beating.

at the back of his mind, he realized he hadn't said anything for a few minutes. and now biana was looking at him expectantly. so tam cracked a smile, saying, "careful now, you wouldn't want to blind anyone with those pearly whites."

if he could've slapped himself in the face, right in front of biana, without seeming more of a moron, he would have.

what the actual fuck, tam? he groaned to himself. first of all, that "joke" wasn't even funny. second, who even said "pearly whites" anymore?!

but biana started to giggle, which turned into full-on laughter. she doubled over, and grabbed tam's arm to balance herself.

goosebumps shot up his arm and entire body. he couldn't stop the blush from rising to his cheeks.

biana blushed too, realizing what she had grabbed, and let go quickly— too quickly in tam's opinion. "sorry," she said bashfully, teal eyes still shining with amusement.

[ small talk, he drives
coffee at midnight
the light reflects
the chain on your neck ]

as it turned out, biana and tam had been accepted into the same university. the two of them became fast friends, unlike how it was back in high school. now, tam was driving them to the coffee shop a few blocks away from eternalia university, an impromptu visit before finals started the next day.

it was the middle of the night, and the dark, looming clouds covered the moon, so the only light to guide them was from the streetlights. biana reached a hand out and flicked on the radio. soft music played in the background as tam continued to drive.

she glanced at him, thankful that he was so focused on driving that he didn't notice her eyes transfixed on him. pulling her bottom lip between her teeth, biana admired the way tam clenched his jaw as he concentrated on driving. her eyes lingered on the way his dark and long eyelashes fluttered against his cheeks every time he took a breath, on the graceful slope of his nose and on his rosy lips.

briefly, she wondered how they'd feel against her own.

but she caught herself, and pulled her attention away from tam's gorgeous face. a few minutes later, they pulled into the drive-thru of the coffee-shop. he ordered a black coffee and an ice cappuccino— his order, and hers.

the fluorescent light from the menu-boards directed biana to the silver chain around tam's neck, which glinted. a smile lit up her face. nights like these were ones she lived for.

[ he says, "look up"
and your shoulders brush
no proof, one touch
but you felt enough ]

tam's hand brushed against biana's as they walked along the waterfront. his heart leapt to his throat, but he didn't say anything, though he yearned for their hands to meet again.

they continued along the cobblestone path, hands brushing every few minutes, fingers close enough to touch, but retracting away at the slightest touch. tam noticed biana shivering, and shrugged off his leather jacket. "take it," he said, and she did.

she looked like a dream, tam thought, in her floral dress and his jacket. though the jacket nearly swallowed her whole, and the sleeves were too long, biana looked amazing in leather.

"thanks," she whispered, wrapping her arms around herself as yet another breeze blew by them. a few strands of hair slipped out from her braid, and tam wished to tuck them behind her ears.

but he simply tucked his hands into the pockets of his dark jeans, and continued walking.

as the reached the end of the pier, tam looked up to see the moon in all its glory. he cast a glance sideways at biana, to see if she saw it too, but she was focused on the ripples and waves of the water.

"look up," he said softly, nudging biana's shoulder and then pointing upwards.

she sucked in a breath, and leaned closer to him. their shoulders brushed coincidentally, sending sparks up tam's spine. "oh, it's beautiful," biana said wistfully, still staring up at the moon.

"yes," tam said softly, but his eyes were on the brunette beauty standing beside him. "beautiful."

and she turned to him, beaming.

[ you can hear it in the silence, silence, you
you can feel it on the way home, way home, you
you can see it with the lights out, lights out ]

biana and tam held hands as they stumbled out of the bar. neither of them said a word, the events of that night still being played over and over in their heads. a smile lit up biana's face as the silence grew comfortable, and she held onto tam's hand a little tighter as they ran down the crosswalk.

cars honked at them, but she couldn't care less. tam song had kissed her earlier that night, she was now holding his hand as they walked back to her place, and everything was perfect.

biana's heart thrummed with happiness as tam kissed her again, on her doorstep. a drunken giggle escaped her lips— whether she was drunk on alcohol or on feelings, she didn't know— but the serotonin was all-consuming nonetheless.

she unlocked her door, and they stumbled down the hallway and into her bedroom.

tam gazed at her with something indescribable, bottom lip pulled between his teeth, and then helped biana unzip her little black dress. her heart fluttered as he sat her on the bed, and took her black pumps off her feet, too.

her stomach turned all topsy-turvy as he kissed her once more— on the forehead this time— and then tucked her into bed. "goodnight biana," he said, and then flicked the lights off.

[ you are in love, true love
you are in love ]

tam grinned stupidly, his heart skipping a beat as biana ran towards him. a second later, she had tackled him with a bear hug. the pure joy on her face upon seeing him sent shivers down tam's spine. he hugged her back, planting a kiss on the top of her head.

for biana, he was a goner, and he knew it.

[ morning, his place
burnt toast, sunday
you keep his shirt
he keeps his word ]

biana woke up in an unfamiliar bed, in a familiar bedroom. she turned to the side, expecting to see the boy she loved so dearly sleeping beside her, but the spot next to her was empty. cheeks flushed and stomach tossing, biana pushed the covers off her bare legs and scantily-clothes body, a sigh escaping her lips.

she rummaged around the room for something to cover herself with, and came up with tam's shirt from the night before. a shy smile creeping onto her face, biana pulled it on over her lacy black bra and matching panties, and hoped desperately that it would cover everything.

then, she ambled out of the bedroom, an ache in her legs, and into the kitchen. what greeted her, was a sight she couldn't have imagined.

a boxer-clad tam song was running across the kitchen, two slices of burnt bread in his hand. he grimaced and cursed out loud, before dropping the ruined food in the green bin.

biana couldn't help the laugh that escaped from her lips.

tam turned to her in surprise. "oh, you're awake!" then, his eyes roamed over her body, and he winked, "you look amazing in my clothes."

a blush creeped up her cheeks, and biana shook her head, changing the subject. "how in hell did you manage to burn toast?"

"it was an accident," tam grumbled, a blush creeping up his cheeks as well. "i wanted to make you breakfast in bed, but then i realized i can't cook, so i decided to make you toast instead. turns out, i can't even do that."

she burst out laughing this time, the disgruntled look on his face too much for her to handle. it reminded her of a toddler. tam caught her as she doubled over, and she let out a breathy sigh. "ahhhh," biana paused to catch her breath. she fixed him with a blinding smile, saying, "you're too sweet, tammy."

"next time i'll just order something from the breakfast grill," he sighed in defeat.

"good idea," biana grinned, despite herself, her mind flashing back to the burnt toast.

[ and for once, you let you
of your fears and your ghosts
one step, not much
but it said enough ]

"biana," tam said suddenly, propping himself up on his elbow to face his something. they weren't just friends, but they weren't quite boyfriend and girlfriend. sure, they slept together and spent one-on-one time together, but they weren't exactly dates.

the girl beside him hummed, tilting her head up to face him. "what's going on in that mind of yours, tammy?"

"what are we?" he asked after a few seconds of hesitation. silence. biana didn't say anything. tam swallowed roughly, mentally preparing for the worst.

but, biana responded with another question: "what do you mean?"

"like," he fought to find the right words. "the two of us, what are we? we kiss and cuddle and— and sleep together. we're best friends sometimes, but we're more than that other times."

she replied with a brilliant smile, "we're whatever you want us to be." and his heart soured.

"can i be your boyfriend?" tam asked, before he lost all courage.

that was all it took. another smile graced biana's face. "i'd love that," she told him, then added, "boyfriend."

tam impulsively leaned forward and kissed her.

[ you kiss on sidewalks
you fight and you talk ]

once their relationship became official, the news spread across the entire university. of course, it was all their doing. biana and tam would kiss in hallways, after class, before class, bring each other little presents, "study" together, and so much more.

when tam pulled biana into a kiss in the middle of the sidewalk, she didn't mind. instead, she melted into his embrace, her lips moving against his in a passionate kiss. sparks flew, and biana decided that kissing tam felt like heaven on earth. nothing would ever compare to the butterflies she got when she kissed him.

when they went out for a dinner date at a relatively high-end restaurant, biana glowed. she put on her best dress, curled her hair, and applied glowy makeup that would last all night. tam picked her up at 7 on the dot, and her heart soared. they settled into a comfortable booth, menus in hand, and held a whispered conversation. biana's face ached from smiling so much, but she simply couldn't stop. tam's lips were stretched in a crooked smile as well.

but when the server arrived with the food, biana noticed tam's smile slip from his face. it was replaced by a slight frown. biana accepted their food with a graceful smile for both herself and tam. when the server walked away, she turned to her boyfriend questioningly. "what happened, babe?"

"nothing," he replied, but his face was as gloomy as ever.

biana pursed her lips, but didn't push. instead, she took a fork and started on her pasta.

the two of them finished their meal in silence, the evening's earlier magic forgotten. tam paid the bill, still frowning, while biana shook her head at him. what had happened to him?

as they walked out of the restaurant, she asked him that question exactly.

tam stopped in his tracks, pulling his hand out of biana's grasp. her heart began to beat faster— but not in a good way at his action.

"what happened to me? really?" he spat, and biana took a cautious step back. "that waiter was clearly flirting with you, and you didn't say a single thing!"

her eyebrows furrowed together; flirting? when had that happened? biana frowned. "babe, do you mean the time when he suggested we get the black forest cake?"

"yes," tam ground out. "and—"

but she cut him off. "babe, it was literally a suggestion— and you love black forest cake! besides, it's his job to do that, to make suggestions, and basically just, y'know, customer service things up."

"whatever," he replied with a scowl. he started to walk again, but this time biana was the one who didn't move. when tam turned to face her, she shook her head at him.

"if you don't want to talk to me like a normal person, i don't want to walk home with you."

and she turned on her heel, and walked away from tam.

it took fifteen minutes for him to finally catch up to her. and, when he did, biana didn't even spare him a glance. it was one thing to be jealous, but another thing entirely to blame your significant other for another person's actions.

"biana," tam sighed.

she didn't reply.

"biana, please."

silence.

"biana, would you please just stop?"

more silence.

"biana, please," he grabbed her wrist, making her stop in her tracks. "just hear me out."

and she finally turned to face him, a slight frown on her lips. "well? i'm listening."

"i'm not sorry for being insecure, but i am sorry for blaming you for my own insecurities and for some other person's flirtyness," he started, and biana nodded slowly; it was a good start. "i just feel like you can do so much better than me, which is why it's so hard to see other people flirting with you. what i realized, though, is that you never flirt back. which must mean that you like me as much as i like you. i'm sorry, bia."

and a small smile graced her lips. she wrapped her arms around tam. "it's okay to be insecure sometimes," she told him honestly. "i get insecure too when i see pretty girls flirting with you. but i won't ever leave you, and i trust you to not leave me for someone else."

tam laughed a little. "i would never," he promised, and pressed a kiss to the top of biana's head.

right there, in his arms, she melted.

[ one night he wakes
strange look on his face
pauses, then says
you're my best friend ]

tam woke from a fitful sleep to a warm arm wrapped around him. biana, his mind informed. he turned his head to the right, to face his sleeping girlfriend. although not very cuddly during the night, biana had curled into tam's body today, her arm wrapped around his middle and her legs thrown over his. somehow, she had sensed his distress in sleep, and tried to comfort him.

and that thought sent the butterflies in his stomach flying.

tam reached a hand out and swept unruly strands of hair away from biana's face, and then caressed her cheek. i love you, he thought. overcome with emotion, he simply whispered, "you're my best friend", even though she couldn't hear him.

it was the thought that counted.

[ and you knew what it was
he is in love ]

biana awoke to suspicious creaking of the floors. after she rubbed her eyes and threw off her blankets, she slipped her cold feet into fuzzy bunny slippers. she crept out the bedroom and down the hallway, following the odd sounds to the kitchen.

suddenly wishing she had some sort of weapon on her, biana flattened herself against the wall. she took a deep breath, and then peered around the corner.

her heart leapt out of her throat, and then her shoulders sagged in relief.

it was only tam, sitting at the table. he had a packet of peanut m&ms in front of him, which surprised biana, as he had always told her he hated them. which worked out for both of them, because biana absolutely adored peanut m&ms. but, as she watched tam devour the entire packet, she knew that he had lied to her.

he liked peanut m&ms, possibly as much as she did.

and yet, he always gave them to her, spouting something about hating them.

biana's heart swelled as she realized that he did it for her.

[ you can hear it in the silence, silence, you
you can hear it on the way home, way home, you
you can see it with the lights out, lights out
you are in love, true love ]

biana vacker loved tam song, she was sure of it.

she loved the way he grinned at her lopsidedly whenever he told a bad joke, the way his silver eyes sparkled whenever he talked about music or his sister or physics, and the way his cheeks flushed a light pink whenever she teased him.

she loved the way he always put her above himself, the way he was selfless in everything he did, and the way he cared deeply— even though he refused to admit it.

she loved the butterflies she got when she was around him, the way her lips set into a permanent smile in his presence, and the way he said her name— "bia".

tam song loved biana vacker, he was sure of it.

he loved the way sarcasm flowed from her lips, the way she'd toss her hair over her shoulder and raise an eyebrow when she was challenging someone, and the way her teal eyes told a million stories with her ever-visible emotions and exaggerated expressions.

he loved the way she encouraged him to experience and exhibit the emotions he never felt comfortable feeling before, the way she never hesitated to stand up for anyone, and the way she loved fiercely.

he loved the spike of serotonin he got whenever they touched, the way he felt truly happy whenever she was around him, and how she made him feel truly loved.

[ and so it goes
you two are dancing in a snow globe, round and round
and he keeps the picture of you in his office downtown
and you understand now why they lost their minds and fought the wars
and why i've spent my whole life tryin' to put it into words ]

on the night of their wedding, tam spun biana round and round. her white gown swished all around their feet, and she stumbled in her heels as it got later and later in the night. he had loosened his tie ages ago, and it had fallen from his suit, and biana was stepping all over his polished shoes.

but neither of them seemed to care.

they were in their own world, just the two of them.

and no one— and nothing— else mattered.

as they held each other throughout the night, both of them promised to never let go.

because they were in love, and this love was to last.

[ 'cause you can hear it in the silence, silence, you
you can feel it on the way home
you can see it with the lights out
you are in love, true love
you are in love ]
