NINETEEN

LARISA

Twirling my phone in my hand once more, I glanced up as Zaynab and Maina joined us at the table, laughing. It was 10:37AM, meaning that we had less than thirty minutes to finish up with breakfast, return our plates and just hang around before workshop, and in all honesty, I couldn't wait to get off this table. To make matters worse for me, we'd all just picked up our breakfast, due to Chimdindu's insistence on us "doing things together".

The boy ehn.

On a normal day, I'd have laughed. Not today, though. Not today.

There was a very unsettling feeling in the deep of my gut, which I'd had since I saw her with Evan yesterday. As much as I wanted to convince myself she'd told him nothing about what she saw, and caught on camera as a matter of fact, there was something that just told me that Evan knew.

Guilty conscience?

I noticed how Maia shifted her seat slightly away from her brother's as he sat down while Dindu led the breakfast prayers, to which everyone except Zaynab and Evan echoed "Amen". I stared at the boy, wondering and trying the best to figure out if he knew anything about me based on his demeanour.

Seeming to have felt someone staring at him, Evan raised his head slowly, strangely making my heart skip a beat. Immediately, I turned away, not daring to have him look me in the eye.

"God forbid," I muttered under my breath at the near chance of Evan gazing into my eyes and soul, finding me guilty, and tearing me apart with judgement. I won't be surprised if he told the rest as well. I was no different from the boy I'd slapped.

And to think you're a pastor's daughter.

"Hah!" Ziora's voice caught our attention instantly, robbing me of the chance to reply that thought in my head. All heads were turned in her direction yet, the girl who had ceased all conversation on the table said nothing to us as her eyes remained on the screen of her phone.

Ah ah.

It was obvious she wasn't typing anything, I only wondered what she'd seen or watched that made her exclaim like that, then act like nothing had happened. I wanted her to speak, desperately and urgently, at least to say something that'd rid me of the thoughts that were beginning to sleep back into my mind, and temporarily distract me from my impending doom.

"Iris," Maina's voice called out to her, making me turn to look at the boy. His voice was completely laced with the tone of admiration and whatnot, it almost seemed as though he meant to lull her to sleep. The sound of his voice as he said her name could've been described as "sultry" , but then it was too soft and gentle to be sexy. I smirked, looking at his eyes which were fixed on the black model.

It was all too obvious, Maina was whipped.

"What happened? You yelled" Zaynab snapped rather aggressively, breaking the chemistry packed eye lock occuring between Maina and Iris, and making either party look at her.

Ah. What's her own??

Of course, I wasn't the only one taken aback by her unnecessary intervention and rudeness towards Iris, a girl who was at least two years older than her. I was about to speak and scold that spirit out of her when Maina beat me to it.

"There wasn't any need to speak to her that way, Zee. She did nothing wrong". That seemed to do the trick, as Zaynab just sighed, stuck her spoon into her tea and turned away.

Hah. Wahala be like wetin again?

"Oh, I-" I heard Iris giggle to herself for a bit, before she cleared her throat and spoke again. "I'm sorry oh, I just saw this post on Instagram. Secondary schools these days be wilding"

"What happened again, and which school?" Dindu asked in a bored tone, as if he expected what ever she was going to say next.

Honestly, secondary schools had been making Nigerian top headlines for the past couple of months, and for the worst reasons. The talk on moral decadence yesterday was very necessary, in my opinion, and I felt that needed to be broadcasted for the whole of Nigeria. From drugs, to sex, to cults, you see them all in secondary schools nowadays.

And I thought my set was immoral.

"A group of Ss3 students have been accused of gang raping a teacher of theirs, then beating her to death oh, after she refused their advances. Imagine" Iris scowled, expressing every form of disgust and disapproval on her face. "If this is true eh, those students should be tortured every single day on earth until they die. What rubbish?!"

"Nna eh, I don't even like hearing about all these things" Dindu leaned back in his seat with an undecipherable look on his face. He seemed to stare into space for a minute, before looking down at the half empty plate of Indomie in front of him.

"I'll admit my set was bad, as in rotten, corrupt," Maina raised his hands in mock surrender, continuing what he was saying. "But we never went this far nah. Yes oh, we chyked our fine teachers and corpers, but it wasn't like we'd force them to accept anything from us"

"What's this world turning into?" I asked lowly, and instantly, I felt a pair of eyes on me. I knew exactly who it was, and that confirmed everything. He knew everything. I didn't bother raising my eyes from my plate to meet his, as the others continued talking about their high school days and how they weren't this bad.

Evan, however, said nothing. Not in contribution to how secondary schools these days lacked limits, nor in contribution to what and what they did and didn't do in his secondary school. As for me, the most we did was play truth or dare to tongue kiss your friend's babe in front of everyone, or pay a fine.

You, nko? My subconscious mocked and I mentally scowled at myself, regretting the possible mess I'd gotten myself into.

What if he wasn't the only one she showed?

Looking at Evan once more, I noticed him typing into his phone, something he usually didn't do at the table, and immediately my phone chimed with a notification as soon as he dropped his, making my heart sink to the pit of my stomach.

<Meet me during leisure.

9:53AM

That was all the text showed, nothing more, nothing less, and I needed no one to tell me that it was Evan. He didn't even need to introduce himself, his self conceited aura was very dominant, even in his method of typing. It sort of seemed like a command.

A command I wouldn't dare go against.

Finally, I managed to leave the breakfast table with shaky hands and without making eye contact with Evan, moving into the nearest toilet to gather my thoughts, and then, there she was. The person I'd dreaded seeing the most since two nights ago. I expected her to talk to me, but she said nothing, didn't even act as if I was in the same space with her, she just washed her hands, dried them and left without so much as a second glance at me through the screen mirror on the wall, which scared me even more as I began to question whether I was imagining everything and feeling guilty for no apparent reason.

Guilt.

Splashing the cold water on my face, I stared at myself through the mirror.

God, get me through this, I promise I'll stop.

That sounded like a promise I'd made and broken so many times before.

What if the rest of the gang found out? How would I face them then?

Larisa Adenekan, shebi her father is General Overseer of Victory of The Word Christian Church of God, and see the dirty act she's doing.

Later she'll be asking us to pray like she's the holiest among us, my foot.

Leaning on the porcelain sink, I had no idea when tears escaped my eyes. There was nothing I wasn't ready to do to make sure the rest never found out about this, about me, even if it meant taking Evan down first.

It was time to stop.
