Handling the Horcruxes

Harry’s Point of View

“We know that there are horcruxes. We are pretty sure that there are exactly seven, since Vol — Tom considers seven to be the most powerfully magical number. Once all of the Horcruxes are destroyed, then we think it will be possible to destroy the portion of Tom Riddle’s soul that resides in his ‘body’,” Hermione offered.

Who is she kidding? We don’t know for sure if we will ever be able to destroy Voldemort. What if I can’t destroy him? What if I have to die?

“We know that Tom Riddle’s diary was a Horcrux, and that it has been destroyed.” Ginny went first, getting her most painful memory out of the way.

Ginny…I’m so sorry.

“Marvolo’s ring was also destroyed,” Ron added.

Dumbledore…I’m so sorry.

“We are looking for Slytherin’s locket. We found it once, but it has been moved,” Ginny continued.

So many people hurt by the madness of one man. It ends with me.

“And Helga Hufflepuff’s cup,” Ron added.

How many people suffered for Tom to collect his treasures?

"Nagini, the snake, might be a Horcrux," Ginny continued.

I wonder if I’ll be able to talk to Nagini?

"I don't think she is," Harry interjected. "I don't think that Tom would trust another living creature with a portion of his soul." He’s too smart for that.

Luna surprised everyone by saying firmly, “The only way to destroy him is to change him back into the boy he was when he was Tom Riddle. Since that’s the way he will be during the final battle, it’s best to think of him that way now. We are starting with his name, which will destroy the power of his chosen name.”

Way to go, Luna! I can’t believe I ever doubted her.

Ginny smiled broadly at her classmate. “Exactly what I was thinking, Luna.”

“If Nagini is not a Horcrux, then that leaves two Horcruxes,” Harry said, knowing it was time for them to tread lightly. “Before he died, Dumbledore shared some of his theories with me. I believe that the last two Horcruxes belong to the remaining two founders of Hogwarts.” We need to tread lightly here. I don’t want them to be in danger because of something I told them.

“You know where they are?” Luna asked.

“I am confident that we will be able to figure it out with the knowledge that Dumbledore has passed on to us.” Harry replied somewhat shakily. Uh, yeah. I do. It’s just that I don’t want you to know yet.

“We need to discuss our travel plans once we reach King’s Cross Station,” Ginny said.

Watch what you say, Hermione.

“We will need to meet with the DA to discuss the possibility of a Death Eater attack,” Hermione began. “First we will have to go to Harry’s Aunt and Uncle’s house. We will be there for a fortnight. Then we will be returning to the Burrow for Bill’s wedding. After that, we will have to visit the Headquarters for the Order and Godric’s Hollow. We will need the plans for the DA to be in place before we return from those trips. We are fairly certain that there will be some heavy Death Eater attacks once they find out we have begun our search. The only time for us to meet before we leave on our journey is at Bill’s wedding.”

Perfect, Hermione. Tell them everything.

“You can count on us, Harry,” said Neville strongly, “we won’t let you down.”

I’m more worried about letting you down.

“If my Dad can find the elusive Narglesap, Neville and I can locate the members of the DA,” Luna said. “We will meet you at the wedding.”

I hope so. We’ll need everyone we can get.

“Neville, you want to see something really fantastic?” Ron asked.

I can’t believe it’s over. It went better than I thought it would.

Ginny’s Point of View

“We know that there are Horcruxes. We are pretty sure that there are exactly seven, since Vol — Tom considers seven to be the most powerfully magical number. Once all of the Horcruxes are destroyed, then we think it will be possible to destroy the portion of Tom Riddle’s soul that resides in his ‘body’,” Hermione offered.

I guess I’d better start with the diary, I don’t want to save the ‘best’ for last.

“We know that Tom Riddle’s diary was a Horcrux, and that it has been destroyed.” Ginny started. Phew!

“Marvolo’s ring was also destroyed,” Ron added.

Dumbledore did that on his own. He barely survived. How are we going to be able to destroy the rest of them?

“We are looking for Slytherin’s locket. We found it once, but it has been moved,” Ginny continued.

What happens if we can’t find it?

“And Helga Hufflepuff’s cup,” Ron added.

Where could that be?

"Nagini, the snake, might be a Horcrux," Ginny continued. I’m not even sure where to begin on this one. I don’t even want to think about a gigantic snake that follows Voldemort’s orders.

"I don't think she is," Harry interjected. "I don't think that Tom would trust another living creature with a portion of his soul."

He might be that stupid.

Luna surprised everyone by saying firmly, “The only way to destroy him is to change him back into the boy he was when he was Tom Riddle. Since that’s the way he will be during the final battle, it’s best to think of him that way now. We are starting with his name, which will destroy the power of his chosen name.”

Ginny smiled broadly at her classmate. “Exactly what I was thinking, Luna.” Tom is going down.

“If Nagini is not a Horcrux, then that leaves two Horcruxes,” Harry said, knowing it was time for them to tread lightly. “Before he died, Dumbledore shared some of his theories with me. I believe that the last two Horcruxes belong to the remaining two founders of Hogwarts.”

That leaves Gryffindor and Ravenclaw. I wonder what the items could be?

“You know where they are?” Luna asked.

I sure hope Harry does.

“I am confident that we will be able to figure it out with the knowledge that Dumbledore has passed on to us.” Harry replied somewhat shakily.

I know that you’ll figure it all out. We’ll help you along the way.

“We need to discuss our travel plans once we reach King’s Cross Station,” Ginny said. I don’t want Neville and Luna to think that they’re coming with us.

Good job, Hermione.

“You can count on us, Harry,” said Neville strongly, “we won’t let you down.”

None of us want to let him down.

“If my Dad can find the elusive Narglesap, Neville and I can locate the members of the DA,” Luna said. “We will meet you at the wedding.”

Yeesh, Luna, don’t talk about the Narglesaps at the wedding, please.

“Neville, you want to see something really fantastic?” Ron asked.

Here we go!

Hermione’s Point of View

“We know that there are Horcruxes. We are pretty sure that there are exactly seven, since Vol — Tom considers seven to be the most powerfully magical number. Once all of the Horcruxes are destroyed, then we think it will be possible to destroy the portion of Tom Riddle’s soul that resides in his ‘body’,” Hermione offered. I hope we’re right.

“We know that Tom Riddle’s diary was a Horcrux, and that it has been destroyed.” Ginny went first, getting her most painful memory out of the way.

Ginny. Just remember that you survived that ordeal, and it has only made you stronger.

“Marvolo’s ring was also destroyed,” Ron added.

How did Dumbledore do it?

“We are looking for Slytherin’s locket. We found it once, but it has been moved,” Ginny continued.

We found it? Oh. We’re not telling them everything. Why not?

“And Helga Hufflepuff’s cup,” Ron added.

Do we know anything about this one?

"Nagini, the snake, might be a Horcrux," Ginny continued.

Not a chance. Tom isn’t that insipid.

"I don't think she is," Harry interjected. "I don't think that Tom would trust another living creature with a portion of his soul."

Exactly.

Luna surprised everyone by saying firmly, “The only way to destroy him is to change him back into the boy he was when he was Tom Riddle. Since that’s the way he will be during the final battle, it’s best to think of him that way now. We are starting with his name, which will destroy the power of his chosen name.”

When did she get so intuitive? She still astonishes me.

Ginny smiled broadly at her classmate. “Exactly what I was thinking, Luna.”

She and Ginny have been getting pretty close. I’m happy for her. She needs a close friend. Maybe she won’t feel on the outside as much.

Two Horcruxes left, from Ravenclaw and Gryffindor. Ravenclaw is probably some sort of an educational object. She was the smartest of the founders. Gryffindor, hmm. Didn’t Dumbledore say something about there being no relics left? He mentioned something. What was it?

“You know where they are?” Luna asked.

I have no clue. I hope someone else does.

“I am confident that we will be able to figure it out with the knowledge that Dumbledore has passed on to us.” Harry replied somewhat shakily.

Stay strong, little brother. Dumbledore has prepared you well. We are all here beside you. Everything will work itself out.

“We need to discuss our travel plans once we reach King’s Cross Station,” Ginny said.

My turn.

The only time for us to meet before we leave on our journey is at Bill’s wedding.” Phew.

“You can count on us, Harry,” said Neville strongly, “we won’t let you down.”

You have made such a difference just by being here. You couldn’t let us down.

“If my Dad can find the elusive Narglesap, Neville and I can locate the members of the DA,” Luna said. “We will meet you at the wedding.”

The wedding. I need to get them a gift.

“Neville, you want to see something really fantastic?” Ron asked.

Ron!

Ron’s Point of View

“We know that there are Horcruxes. We are pretty sure that there are exactly seven, since Vol — Tom considers seven to be the most powerfully magical number. Once all of the Horcruxes are destroyed, then we think it will be possible to destroy the portion of Tom Riddle’s soul that resides in his ‘body’,” Hermione offered.

Ugh. Creepy thought, that is. A shattered piece of your soul inside your body.

“We know that Tom Riddle’s diary was a Horcrux, and that it has been destroyed.” Ginny went first, getting her most painful memory out of the way.

I’ll kill him if he ever tries to harm Ginny again.

“Marvolo’s ring was also destroyed,” Ron added. How? How did Dumbledore do it?

“We are looking for Slytherin’s locket. We found it once, but it has been moved,” Ginny continued.

I’ll bet that creepy Kreacher hid it somewhere.

“And Helga Hufflepuff’s cup,” Ron added.

No clue on this one. It could be anywhere.

"Nagini, the snake, might be a Horcrux," Ginny continued.

Snakes. They’re almost as bad as the bloody spiders. I can’t believe Harry went up against the Basilisk. They have creepy fangs, beady eyes, and slithery, scaly skin. Ew.

"I don't think she is," Harry interjected. "I don't think that Tom would trust another living creature with a portion of his soul."

Can someone who’s evil trust?

Luna surprised everyone by saying firmly, “The only way to destroy him is to change him back into the boy he was when he was Tom Riddle. Since that’s the way he will be during the final battle, it’s best to think of him that way now. We are starting with his name, which will destroy the power of his chosen name.”

Woah. What else is there to say?

Ginny smiled broadly at her classmate. “Exactly what I was thinking, Luna.”

I didn’t know that they were that close. It’s good for Ginny to have her own friends. Maybe she and Harry will stop drooling over each other. No, on second thought, that’s a bad idea. Harry and Ginny need to spend more time together so I can get Hermione alone.

“You know where they are?” Luna asked.

No idea. I sure hope Hermione has this figured out by now. We all know she’s going to be the one to figure out what they are and where to find them.

“I am confident that we will be able to figure it out with the knowledge that Dumbledore has passed on to us.” Harry replied somewhat shakily.

I sure hope Hermione was paying attention, because I have no idea what he’s talking about right now.

“We need to discuss our travel plans once we reach King’s Cross Station,” Ginny said.

I’m really feeling left out here, people. Why don’t I know about any of this?

Oh. I knew all of that.

“You can count on us, Harry,” said Neville strongly, “we won’t let you down.”

Last time I checked, we could only count on Neville hanging from the chandelier. Which, technically, is up.

“If my Dad can find the elusive Narglesap, Neville and I can locate the members of the DA,” Luna said. “We will meet you at the wedding.”

I don’t even want to know what a Narglesap is.

“Neville, you want to see something really fantastic?” Ron asked. Someone has to be impressed by my transformation.

*****

Neville’s Point of View

“We know that there are Horcruxes. We are pretty sure that there are exactly seven, since Vol — Tom considers seven to be the most powerfully magical number. Once all of the Horcruxes are destroyed, then we think it will be possible to destroy the portion of Tom Riddle’s soul that resides in his ‘body’,” Hermione offered.

He split his soul? That must have taken very powerful dark magic.

“We know that Tom Riddle’s diary was a Horcrux, and that it has been destroyed.” Ginny went first, getting her most painful memory out of the way.

That must have been what happened in the Chamber of Secrets.

“Marvolo’s ring was also destroyed,” Ron added.

Who is this Marvolo bloke? Whoever he is, he must be related to Voldemort somehow. Why else would his jewelry be important?

“We are looking for Slytherin’s locket. We found it once, but it has been moved,” Ginny continued.

Who would take it?

“And Helga Hufflepuff’s cup,” Ron added.

How could Voldemort get that?

"Nagini, the snake, might be a Horcrux," Ginny continued.

Nagini? His pet snake? How do you make a Horcrux out of a living creature?

"I don't think she is," Harry interjected. "I don't think that Tom would trust another living creature with a portion of his soul."

He would have to be fairly daft to do that, wouldn’t he?

Luna surprised everyone by saying firmly, “The only way to destroy him is to change him back into the boy he was when he was Tom Riddle. Since that’s the way he will be during the final battle, it’s best to think of him that way now. We are starting with his name, which will destroy the power of his chosen name.”

How did I get so lucky? She is such a smart witch. Not to mention wonderful and beautiful.

I believe that the last two Horcruxes belong to the remaining two founders of Hogwarts.”

We have Slytherin and Hufflepuff. That leaves Gryffindor and Ravenclaw. What kind of token would Vold- Tom choose?

“You know where they are?” Luna asked.

I hope he does!

“I am confident that we will be able to figure it out with the knowledge that Dumbledore has passed on to us.” Harry replied somewhat shakily.

You don’t know where they are? How are you going to find them?

“We need to discuss our travel plans once we reach King’s Cross Station,” Ginny said.

Oh, yeah, the DA meeting. I wonder when that will be? It’s going to take a while to find everyone.

Right. So we’ll meet at Bill’s wedding and make our plans for the DA meeting.

“You can count on us, Harry,” said Neville strongly, “we won’t let you down.” I won’t let you down.

“If my Dad can find the elusive Narglesap, Neville and I can locate the members of the DA,” Luna said. “We will meet you at the wedding.”

I don’t think that was the best way you could have said that.

“Neville, you want to see something really fantastic?” Ron asked.

Do I have to?

*****

Luna’s Point of View

“We know that there are Horcruxes. We are pretty sure that there are exactly seven, since Vol — Tom considers seven to be the most powerfully magical number. Once all of the Horcruxes are destroyed, then we think it will be possible to destroy the portion of Tom Riddle’s soul that resides in his ‘body’,” Hermione offered.

Seven pieces total, or seven Horcruxes plus the battered piece in Tom Riddle?

“We know that Tom Riddle’s diary was a Horcrux, and that it has been destroyed.” Ginny went first, getting her most painful memory out of the way.

That diary caused so many problems for Ginny. I can’t believe she survived that ordeal. I’m sure it had something to do with Harry.

“Marvolo’s ring was also destroyed,” Ron added.

Who is Marvolo?

“We are looking for Slytherin’s locket. We found it once, but it has been moved,” Ginny continued.

Why would anyone move the locket? Who knows about it? Who had access to it? I wonder if they knew of its importance?

“And Helga Hufflepuff’s cup,” Ron added.

That’s new to me. What cup?

"Nagini, the snake, might be a Horcrux," Ginny continued.

I hate snakes.

"I don't think she is," Harry interjected. "I don't think that Tom would trust another living creature with a portion of his soul."

Lalalalala. I’m not listening to you talk about snakes. Hold up. Tom? What are you saying about him? Noting important, I gather. Why is Neville looking at Harry like that? Oh.

Luna surprised everyone by saying firmly, “The only way to destroy him is to change him back into the boy he was when he was Tom Riddle. Since that’s the way he will be during the final battle, it’s best to think of him that way now. We are starting with his name, which will destroy the power of his chosen name.” Was that helpful?

Ginny smiled broadly at her classmate. “Exactly what I was thinking, Luna.”

Ginny got it. I hope everyone else did too.

Ravenclaw and Gryffindor. Our houses. Did anyone else notice that? I wonder if it’s significant?

“You know where they are?” Luna asked. Of course you do.

“I am confident that we will be able to figure it out with the knowledge that Dumbledore has passed on to us.” Harry replied somewhat shakily.

So…yes, you do know where they are, you just don’t want to tell us. That’s understandable.

“We need to discuss our travel plans once we reach King’s Cross Station,” Ginny said.

I forgot all about Bill’s wedding. I wonder if Neville got them anything.

How are they going to be able to do all that? They are going to need help.

“You can count on us, Harry,” said Neville strongly, “we won’t let you down.”

He always knows the right thing to say.

“If my Dad can find the elusive Narglesap, Neville and I can locate the members of the DA,” Luna said. “We will meet you at the wedding.” Damn. Why did I have to go and ruin the moment just because I was uncomfortable?

“Neville, you want to see something really fantastic?” Ron asked.

Maybe Neville’s story wasn’t quite as exciting as he’d hoped. Maybe he should have told them the rest of the details of his stay. That might have been a bit more interesting.
