ZEKIAH XYRIEL'S POV
"The contestants from the Lady Of Fatima University just arrived. You should fix yourselves immediately."
Tiningnan ko si uncle sa salamin kasama ang buong varsity team niya. Kanina pa ako naiinis sa presensya ng mga lalaking 'to. They aren't supposed to be here in the dressing room. My girls were fixing themselves and they're disturbing.
"Thank you for the information, Mr. Rivera. You can go now. We're not yet done. Makakapaghintay ang mga contestant at kung hindi naman, hindi ko na problema 'yon." Tumalikod ako ulit at inayos ang suot ko.
I should be the most attractive in all of them. Even though I just wear a light make up, I'm still the most beautiful girl and no one could replace me. At kahit hindi ako kasama sa contestants, dapat maipagmamalaki pa rin ng mga trainees ko na ako ang mentor nila at wala nang iba.
"Did you remember what I taught y'all?" I asked, crossing my arms over my chest.
They all nodded while smiling widely. Tumango na lang din ako at kinuha ang phone ko para i-text si Caroline. I want her to inform that the contest will start an hour from now. She knew that I agreed to teach the freshmens on how to be a model. Sinabi niya kase na manonood daw siya since live naman.
"Get ready girls, we're going to the ground now. Our school will cheer you up, just chill." I faced all of them and stared on their outfits that I picked for them.
"Dito na lang ako manonood dahil may TV naman dito. I'll prepare your clothes before the first round will end," singit naman ni Katria sa gilid ko.
Right. She's always with me all the time. Palagi niya akong tinutulungan kahit na tumanggi pa ako. I don't know what's with her. Nakakainis na nga rin siya minsan eh.
"I hired two designers to prepare for it so you don't have to stay there. Sumama ka na lang sa'min sa baba." I didn't wait for her answer and started to walk away.
"Wow! Bumait ata ang kaluluwa mo ngayon pero sige. You might change into a demon later." Sumabay siya sa lakad ko pero hindi ko siya tinapunan ng tingin.
Since she also helped me in settling down this contest, I get her an off-shoulder black dress that fits her body and a pair of sandals. Kita rin ang dibdib niya ng konti kaya medyo strikto ang boyfriend niya kanina pa.
When we get outside, Mr. Rivera together with his varsity team were waiting for us. Ako ang nangunguna dahil alam kong hahanapin ng mga estudyante rito ang presensya ko. They know from the very start that I'm their mentor so they were so excited about the outcome. I even heard about the rumors that they would never let this pass.
"Grabe, ang sikat ko na. Nakatingin sa'kin lahat ng babae," I heard one of uncle's player at my back, gossiping.
"Gago! Feeler mo naman masyado. Sa paningin nila, alalay ka lang ng mga contestant na nasa kasama natin." Tinawanan pa ni Shael ang teammate niya kaya nakisama na rin 'yong iba.
A slave, huh? Well, he looks like one of them too.
"Can you hold my bag until the first round will end? Para naman magkaroon ka ng silbi, 'di ba? And please, don't touch my things. I forgot to bring a sanitizer." Hinagis ko ang sling bag ko sa kanya na ikinataranta niya naman.
"Takte! Bakit sa'kin mo ibinilin 'to? Ang dami kaya namin dito, favoritism ka naman masyado." He scratches his head, didn't know what to do on it.
"Bakit? May problema ka?!" I raised my eyebrow at him.
He shook his head like a kid that was scolded by his mother."W-Wala naman pero---"
"Then it's fine! Tumahimik ka na lang." I turned my back on him and walked in the red carpet that connects to the mini-court where the crowd was.
As what I've expected, students were screaming when they saw us walking in the carpet. If I know, their scream were just for me. Maliban sa sinisigaw nila ang pangalan ko, hindi na rin mawawala ang pangalan ng mga lalaking nagmamay-ari dito. Katria's name was even included since she's Daron's girlfriend.
"Hello, Zeriel. I heard that you're the mentor of this girls." A girl who's wearing a cocktail dress same as mine appeared in front of me.
Nginitian ko na lang siya ng peke dahil sinadya niya namang harangan ang daanan ko."Oh, it's you Sophie. Hindi kita napansin. Alam mo naman na hindi ako mahilig mang-entertain ng mga walang kwentang tao kaya pasensya na. By the way, I appreciate your kindness for approaching me but I don't have time for some nonsense things so will you mind if you step aside? Nakaharang ka kase sa dinadaanan ko eh, baka matapakan pa kita."
I heard some gasps around us and some were laughing secretly. Alam kong natamaan siya sa sinabi ko at tumagos 'yon hanggang sa itim niyang kaluluwa. Though, she still manage to smile so that she wouldn't look affected. Napahiya na kase siya, mas nakakahiya kung ipapakita niya ang tunay niyang kulay.
"Ow, really? If that's what you want, sige. Pero bago mo'ko tapakan, linisin mo muna 'yang heels mo.'Yon bang pati ugali mo malinis din," ganti niya naman habang nakangiti pa rin.
I just laughed at her sarcastically."Hindi ko kailangang linisin ang sarili ko para sa'yo. My bad attitudes are making me who I am. Kaya kung pwede, tumabi ka na kase sinasayang mo ang oras ko."
If we're going to talk about mouth to mouth battle, well, I'm pretty sure that I'll get the crown. My mouth is like a machine gun that has a lot of bullets to throw. And as of her, she's also a fighter but easily gets defeated when her ego is involved. I know every single detail of her yet she doesn't know any of mine. I was known as a secretive person about my life and I immediately refuse when it's the topic.
Hindi niya lang matanggap na matatalo ko siya kahit na anong gawin niya.
"Uhm... una na kami. Pasensya na." Katria pulled my wrist to avoid her which I don't like.
Hell! I never like running away from anyone that messed up with me.
"We're not done talking, Katria. Why did you drag me away from there?"
Actually, we're not that far from the middle path where we stand earlier. Nasa East lang kami dahil dito ang pwesto ng University namin. While the other University that is supposed to be Sophie's was on the West side.
She sat properly beside me, crossing her legs and arms."And what? Gagawa kayong dalawa ng eksena sa gitna? Just to remind you, Zeriel, they are the guests of our University so we need to show a little respect to them. Kahit naman na alam kong wala kang respeto kaya manahimik ka na lang."
"Alam mong hindi ako marunong manahimik kapag inuunahan ako eh. Argh! Why is she here by the way?! We don't need her presence and she has nothing to do with this event. Trying to suit herself, I see." I keep my eyes in front, gathering my energy later.
That bitch is stressing me out and she's not even worth it. I really need to control my anger.
"Hindi mo nga siya kailangan pero ang University nila kailangan siya. She's the mentor of the model participants that is your opponent. Bakit hindi mo alam?" she whispered with annoyance on her voice.
I shrugged my shoulders."Maybe because I don't give a damn? Hindi ko alam na pinipilit niya pa rin talaga ang sarili niya para lang magka-level kami. She's always like that. Well, let's see what she got. Competing with me, huh?"
We didn't talk again until the event started. There was an introduction song and dance before the principal's message and the welcome address for that stupid shit University. When everyone clapped their hands for them, I remained silent and didn't gave any reaction towards them. For what? They don't deserve my smile or even my clap.
"And now, let us welcome the contestants of University Of The East." The host stepped out from the stage to give way of the girls.
All of the students in our University stand up to cheer them, except me. Pumalakpak pa rin naman ako dahil ako ang mentor nila at kailangan din nila ang suporta ko. They smiled widely when they saw me clapping my hands for them but I just nodded in response.
"And their mentor is no other than, Zekiah Xyriel Knoxville. Please stand up and turn around."
I hate being demanded by anyone but I have to behave myself since I'm surrounded with many students. I gave them my sweet fake smile before sitting back and immediately changed my expression into a normal one.
"Hindi naman halatang peke ang ngiti mo, promise."
I simply rolled my eyes on her."Whatever you say."
The contest started and I didn't waste a chance to blink my eyes. Pinag-aralan ko ang mga galaw ng kalaban namin dahil alam ko kung ano ang dapat na maging galaw nila. Though, they didn't choose me nor Sophie as a judge because we're both mentors in each group. I can't deny the fact that they were also good but it's just the beginning of the game. Titingnan ko pa kung may ibubuga ba talaga sila at may sense ang pagtuturo ni Sophie sa kanila.
The next is sports competition but before that, there will be a little chitchat to give the contestants a time to change their outfits. Hindi na ako sumama sa kanila dahil nakakapagod maglakad sa ilalim ng araw at masakit din sa paa dahil naka-high heels ako. The stylists will be the one to assist them and they already know what to do.
"What do you think about her?" she asked out of a sudden.
"What her?"
"Your rival, Sophie."
My calm expression suddenly faded and changed into a pissed reaction."You know how I hate it whenever someone mentioned her name on me. And why are you asking me that? Isn't it obvious that we're common enemies? The hell! Magkasabay kaming pumasok sa model industry pero hindi talaga kami nagkakasundo. We're both bitch in our own way but she couldn't reach my level."
"Confident, as always. Para namang ang laki ng atraso niyo sa isa't isa ah. Pero sabagay, at least ikaw mukhang mapa-pakiusapan pero siya hard to get talaga." Nilingon niya ang kinaroroonan ng babaeng 'yon.
Pagak naman akong natawa."Hard to get? I don't think so. Siya ang pinaka-malanding babae na nakilala ko."
"Ha? That's not what I mean. Ang sabi ko mukhang mahirap siyang kausap."
"At malaki rin ang atraso niya sa'kin," I whispered and gritted my teeth.
The second round started and they should prove that they are worth the votes of the audience. This time, they're going to dance with the theme song that we practiced. Hindi naman 'yon mahirap sa kanila dahil mga dancers daw sila since highschool and two of them were part of the cheerleaders squad kaya flexible ang katawan nila. Nang matapos sila ay umalis na sila ng stage para makapagpalit ulit.
There were three competitions left. The swimsuit competition that is next after this song that everybody requested. And after that is the best costume followed by the long gown together with the question and answer portion.
The crowd was in a mess when the contestants revealed their body on stage. Nagkakagulo ang lahat at halos hindi na marinig ang pagpapakalma ng host. Tsk. Every guys favorite and makes them crazier. Kung hindi ba naman manyakis ay uhaw sa katawan. No wonder why everyone's getting energetic in this most awaiting part of this competition. Palamangan ng ganda at pagalingang rumampa.
"Love naman! Anong ginagawa mo sa cellphone mo? Nagsisimula na oh."
Hindi ko sinasadyang mapalingon sa katabi kong si Katria at saka sa likuran niya kung saan nakaupo si Daron. He's busy tapping on his phone but he slightly raised his head when his girlfriend called him.
"Nah. That's boring, love. I'd rather want to stare your picture on my phone than to watch that fucking swimsuit competition."
Katria giggled and pinched his cheeks."My love is so sweet. Pero hindi naman kita pagbabawalan kung manood ka. I'm not controlling you."
"I know, love. It's just that, I'm not interested on it. Ikaw na lang manood, okay?"
I immediately looked away because they might caught me staring on them, eavesdropping also. Sabihin na lang nating medyo iba nga si Daron sa mga lalaking kinamumuhian ko pero ano bang alam ko kung manloloko rin pala siya. Kawawa lang din si Katria 'pag nagkataon.
Of all the guys here in the crowd, Daron is the only one who's silent right there. Ni paglingon hindi niya magawa dahil hindi naman daw siya interesado at mukhang totoo nga. Lahat kase ng lalaki rito kahit na may girlfriend na, lumilingon pa rin sa iba lalo na sa mga contestants. Gaya na lang ng nag-aaway sa hindi kalayuan dahil hindi raw siya pinapansin ng boyfriend niyang nakatutok sa mga naka-swimsuit.
See? Such a jackass!
"Kanina ka pa palingon-lingon ah. 'Wag mong kalimutan na nandito lang ako sa likuran mo."
I almost lost my temper when he talked at my back."You jerk! Why do you love pissing me off?! Bakit hindi ka na lang makisigaw ng bet mong contestant kagaya ng ginagawa ng mga kaibigan mo."
Masyado siyang malapit sa likuran ko at hindi ako makagalaw dahil sa nararamdaman kong pagsingot niya sa buhok ko. Why the hell is he sniffing my hair?!
"Ayoko eh. Mas maganda ka pa naman sa kanila at mas magaling pero wala ka do'n kaya 'wag na lang."
Hindi ako nagpadala sa sinabi niya dahil halos ilang beses ko na 'yang narinig sa iba. They can't fool me on their sweet words because mouth can lie 98% and the rest 2% is maybe the truth. Pinag-aralan ko na 'yan kaya hindi ako tinatablan.
"If you don't have a bet, then shut up. Wala ka naman pa lang magandang sasabihin."
"May crush ka ba kay Kuya Daron?"
Mabilis akong napatingin sa kanya dahil sa sinabi niya."What?! Ginagago mo ba ako?! I never did like someone for goodness sake!"
"Nahuli kase kitang nakatitig sa kanya kanina eh. But whatever it is, he has a girlfriend and it's Katria so you don't have any chance. Bakit kase sa Kuya ko pa, gwapo rin naman ako." I heard disappointment on his voice.
Anong pinaglalaban ng isang 'to?!
"I don't like him, duh? I was just staring at him earlier to confirm that he's not a liar like all the guys in the world. Maybe Katria and I aren't that close but I'm going to warn her if I smell something fishy." Binalik ko ang tingin ko sa harap at napagtantong wala nang contestants do'n.
Argh! This guy is completely a distraction to me.
SHAWN AXCEL'S POV
I don't know why I felt irritated when she admit that she stared at my brother. Alam ko namang sila na ni Kat pero tumitig pa rin siya eh. And what bothers me the most is that why am I affected like this? We're not even close like what she'd said. No matter how I tried to be good to her, still she's playing hard like a stone. Minamasama niya pa nga ang trato ko sa kanya.
Ibang klase, tsk!
After the question and answer portion, the host gave us a little break while the judges were busy making the final scores. My teammates including Katria went to the cafe since they forced Kuya Daron to treat us. Syempre, sobrang lakas ni Kat kay Kuya kaya napapayag agad siya.
"Oh? Asa'n si Miss Model? Bakit hindi mo dinala rito?" biglang tanong ni Mark.
Ayan na naman sila! Hindi talaga nila ako titigilan kakaasar kay Zeriel.
"Why do I have to bring her? Hindi ko pa aayain hihindi na siya. 'Yong ugali niya hindi kakainin ng aso." Nagpatuloy ako sa pagkain at napansin kong natigilan sila.
"Wala naman talagang hayop ang kayang sikmurain ang ugali ko."
Bigla kong naibuga ang kinakain ko nang marinig ang boses ni Zeriel sa likuran ko. I even hit my chest so that the food will go straight to my stomach. No one handed me a glass of water that's why I reach for it by myself.
"Masamang tumalikod kapag may kumakausap sa'yo, Shael." Katria gestured me to turn around and I just gave her an 'are you serious look'.
Kahit nakatalikod ako alam ko namang mukhang leon ang itsura ni Zeriel ngayon. Siya pa eh, best expression niya ang death glare. I might pass out even before I could speak.
"Never mind, I'm not here to talk some nonsense things. Just gave me back my bag because I need to call someone. Bibilangin ko rin ang cards ko, baka sakaling ninakawan mo."
Dito na ako tuluyang napalingon sa kanya."Itong mukhang 'to, magnanakaw? Even if you hand me millions of money, I would never get a chance to steal a peso. Bakit pa kase sa'kin mo binigay ang sling bag mo."
"Pinagtataasan mo ba ako ng boses?!"
Napalabi naman ako."H-Hindi naman."
"Just give me back my sling bag and we're over." She held me her hand, waiting for me to give it back.
"Bakit? May tayo ba?"
"Hindi 'yon ang ibig kong sabihin, bobo!" Siya na mismo ang lumapit sa pwesto ko para abutin ang bag niyang nakalagay sa gilid ng mesa.
I can smell her sweet scent coming from her hair. I wonder what kind of shampoo is she applying on it. Mukhang naadik ako sa amoy no'n kanina habang nasa ground pa kami. Did she even noticed that I was sniffing her hair?
"Ang hilig mo talagang mang-inis ng babae."
Napabalik ako sa reyalidad at napalingon kay Jake."What? Siya lang naman 'yong madaling mainis eh. Her blood is boiling whenever she saw me."
"Para namang ngayon niyo lang napansin na hindi naman talaga sila nagkasundo kahit kailan. There's no chance between them," singit naman ni Clarence.
"Chance? Anong chance ang pinagsasasabi mo?"
They didn't answer me and just continued eating their dessert. Pagkatapos namin do'n ay saka naman nagpatuloy ang contest pero si Katria lang ang bumalik kase kailangan naming lahat na magbihis. An hour after the event is our basketball tournament that's why we need to double our time so we could prepare for our game.
I went to the men's room to change my attire and I made sure that girls will be dead over me. I sprayed a little Matte to my hair so that it will remain on it's style whatever I do. Pandagdag points na rin 'to sa fangirls ko lalong lalo na kay Ze---no don't go there.
"Kuya, briefing na raw tayo sabi ni coach." Kumatok si Akken sa pinto kaya agad kong inayos ang sarili ko at binuksan ang pinto.
"Am I handsome, dude?" I winked at him but he just winced.
"Gasgas ng galawan mo, Kuya. Hindi na ako magtataka kung bakit naiinis sa'yo palagi si Ate Zeriel."
Hayst. Kailangan ba sa lahat ng usapan involve siya? Naiinis pa rin kaya ako sa kanya.
"Don't mention her, dude. Ayoko munang marinig ang pangalan niya, baka malasin ako."
"Anong pangalan? Is it Zeriel?"
I rolled my eyes at Cohen when he really did mention it."Iniisip ko talagang sinadya mong sabihin 'yon. Kapag talaga minalas tayo bahala kayo."
"How could you say so? Our school won the event earlier, Kuya. And guess who's the mentor? It's Zeriel or should I say your best enemy."
"Oh, e 'di maganda. As if I would congratulate that maldita." Sumandal ako sa pader at binigyan sila ng matapang na tingin.
Kuya Daron bounced the ball to my direction and good thing I catched it immediately."You said that because she's not here but if you're having an eye to eye contact with her, you will say the opposite. Trust me dude, you couldn't even form a sentence when she's in front of you. Proven and tested."
I couldn't look straight to his eyes because he might found out that I'm nervous because of what he'd said. Hindi ko alam pero tama talaga si Kuya eh. Hindi naman ako ganito dati no'ng una kaming magkita. I always talk directly and enjoys to show her my sweet smirk. But now, she's the one who's doing it to me. Hindi niya lang alam kung anong nagiging epekto niya sa t'wing magkakalapit kami.
Inalis ko muna siya sa isipan ko dahil kailangan kong makinig sa instructions ni coach. I felt relieved when I easily get my part and the moves that I should remember. Okay na sana ang lahat pero bakit kailangan niya pang magpakita sa'kin bago ang laro. I don't think if I could still focus on our game in this matter.
"Hey, love! I just came here to say good luck to you and to your team. Sa first line kami uupo ni Zeriel kaya makikita mo agad ako." Katria gave his boyfriend a kiss on his cheeks.
Umiwas naman agad ako ng tingin ng magtama ang paningin namin ni Zeriel. I don't know if I should congrats her for winning her team or I'll just ignore her to avoid a quarrel. Kahit naman magsabi ako ng congrats ako pa ang lalabas na masama.
"Shael, won't you say anything to Zeriel? Naipanalo ng team niya ang University natin."
Zeriel's eyebrow arched on her and so am I. Why is it me again and again? Ano na namang gustong ipalabas nitong si Kat?
"So, dinala mo'ko para dito? What a nice trick, Kate Chandria." She rolled her eyes in irritation.
Katria looked at her boredly."Thank you, Zekiah Xyriel."
"Whatever. Don't call me like that!"
"Congrats, Zeriel. You're a great mentor." There, I finally said it. Hindi ko pinagplanuhan pero nasabi ko naman.
I can see that she's surprised for a bit but immediately fade away."Y-Yeah, I know. Good luck to your game. 'Wag kang lampa."
And with that, she turned her back on us and started walking away. I can't explain this feeling of mine. Simpleng good luck lang 'yong sinabi niya pero kumalma kaagad ako. She didn't even smiled at me and didn't wait my response. Pero bakit para sa'kin sapat na 'yon?
I stayed silent until we were called in the open court where the game is held. Our team named Red Warriors while our opponents are Maxi Angels. Pagkatapos ng pagpapakilala, may konting rules and regulations na sinabi ang superior ng basketball game na si Mr. Alvarado. It's just a little tips on how to play fair and square.
When the game finally started, girls were screaming till death and cheering for their team. Kung may labanan ng basketball, syempre hindi pahuhuli ang cheerleaders squad. Sayang. Zeriel was one of them if she just agreed to Mr. Rivera's offer. Mas ganado sana ako maglaro. Aish.
"Shael! Ikaw mag-shoot." Cohen passed me the ball and I jumped higher to toss it in the ring.
Napuno ng hiyawan ang buong court nang madagdagan ang points ng team namin at nag-time out para sa 5 minutes break. Lumapit kami sa coach namin para uminom ng konting tubig para madagdagan ang energy namin maya-maya.
"Great toss, Shael. Now, just follow the second plan that we discussed earlier. Got it?"
We all nodded at Mr. Rivera and placed our hands together."Go! Go! Red Warriors!"
Sakto namang pumito na ang referee senyales na bumalik na kami sa laro dahil magse-second quarter na. When I glanced at the crowd, my eyes landed on her like I already know where she's sitting. Nasa gitna kami at malayo siya ng konti dito sa kinatatayuan ko para hindi sila matamaan ng bola. She stared back at me, fighting the urge to win our eye to eye contact.
"Kuya Shael! Mamaya ka na makipagtitigan sa crush mo, magsisimula na."
Napalingon ako sa kinaroroonan nila at ginulo ang buhok ni Akken. He even complained because of what I did to his hair.
Nang magsimula ulit ang laro para sa second quarter, wala namang naging problema dahil maayos naman sila makipaglaro. Aba! Dapat lang 'no. They came from a sacred University and they will ruin their reputation if they didn't play nice. Mga santo pa naman sila habang kami mga taga-simba lang.
"Raizer, ipasa mo kay Kuya Daron. Siya ang gagawa sa three shoots." Tumakbo ako habang dini-drible ang bola at umikot nang may makasalubong akong taga Maxi Angels.
I bet he's the guardian of the base and he wouldn't let me pass the ball to someone. When I was about to turn to the other side, I realized that they were already encircling me and my team were waiting for me to pass the ball to them. Hindi ako masyadong makakilos dahil bantay sarado nila ang bawat galaw ko and konting mali lang maaagaw nila ang bola. Ilang minuto na lang din ang natitira at mag-eend na ang second quarter kaya kailangan kong bilisan.
Ginawa ko ang lahat para aliwin sila at saka ako pumwesto para i-toss ang bola pero may marunong din pala sa kanilang mag-toss kaya nahawakan niya ang bola. The referee whistled and said that it was foul so we couldn't do anything and just accept it.
"Pasensya na, hindi ko napag-aralang maigi ang naging galaw nila." Napakamot ako sa batok ko nang makabalik kami sa side namin.
Mark tapped my shoulder, telling me that it's okay."Okay lang 'yon, may third at fourth quarter pa naman."
"Just do your best whatever happens. Magaling din ang players nila kaya 'wag kayong basta-basta pakampante." Coach gestured us to go back to the game for the third quarter.
Inaamin kong mas nagiging intensive and laro at hindi na 'to basta mapapaglagpas ng team namin at lalo na sa kabila. We played moderately and just go with the flow. Kailangan kong i-reserve ang buong lakas ko sa fourth quarter para siguradong gumana ang plano.
Ilang beses kaming nagka-shoot pero bumabawi rin ang kabilang team kaya ang ending nag-tie ang scores namin. When the fourth and last quarter started, we're getting aggressive with our actions and so as they. Kami ang nanalo sa first quarter, sila sa second quarter, tapos tie kami sa third quarter. Hindi naman pwedeng mabalewala lang ang paghihirap namin at mauwi sa talo.
"Wag kang tatanga tanga, Mr. Cassanova. Agawin mo 'yong bola!"
I don't know if I was just hallucinating or I did heared her cheering me. There's only one person that calls me like that. Nang tumingin ako saglit sa gawi niya ay tinaasan niya ako ng kilay. I can't help to give her my sweetest smirk as I run towards my opponent to steal the ball. I positioned myself meters away from the ring to shoot the ball for three points. I bit my lower lip when the ball rolled at the edge of the ring, hoping that it will shoot directly so we could win.
I closed my eyes when I felt like we're going to lose because the crowd became silent. Ang sunod ko lang narinig ay ang pagtalbog ng bola sa sahig kasabay ng sigawan nilang lahat. Nang idilat ko ang mga mata ko ay pinagpyestahan na ako ng mga ka-teammates ko.
