I hopped down each step one at a time as I made my way downstairs for dinner. My phone was still clutched in my hand as I rattled it anxiously, relaying the group chat's messages over and over in my head. I couldn't help but overthink every aspect of Hoseok and Namjoon's arrival home earlier that day; even Seokjin flitted in and out of my head and I began to feel even guiltier than I had ten minutes before. A sigh escaped my throat as I made it off the final step and rounded the corner towards the kitchen. Before I could pick my gaze up off the floor, I ran into something solid with a huff, stumbling back for balance.
"Fuck- Watch where you're going."
Namjoon's voice ran roughly through my ears and I shook my head before glaring up at him.
"Sorry. I wasn't looking-"
"Well pick your gaze up and start looking."
His words made me feel inferior to him and I could sense a fire began to build up in my stomach.
"Sorry," I spat out.
"Watch your tone, Yumin."
Fuck your formality, I seethed to myself.
"Fuck you."
"What'd you just-"
"Namjoon, knock it off."
Yoongi stuck his head out from the kitchen entryway and glared daggers into the younger man. The look on his face showed that he'd already been through this once before and I could imagine what conversations went on in the group chat for the seven of them.
At the sound of their hyung's stern voice, Jimin and Jungkook wandered out into the living room, Yeontan padding along behind them like a lost pup as he stared up at them with glossy eyes. They blinked over at the two of us standing on either side of the staircase with a sense of concerned innocence that made my blood boil. I didn't want to hate Namjoon, but he was beginning to make it hard not to.
"I said I was sorry."
Namjoon locked his jaw in irritation, eyes slit with annoyance as he glared down at me.
"I didn't ask for your apology, mutt."
"What the fuck? What the fuck is your deal, you fucking jerk!?"
Jungkook took a step towards me with his hand outstretched. "Yumin-ah, don't."
I pushed his hand away with teeth grit in growing anger. "No! Don't 'Yumin-ah' me. What the fuck did you call me?"
Namjoon swiped his tongue along his inner cheek. "I called you a mutt...because that's what you are. Look at you."
I didn't have to look down at myself to understand his words. My teeth grit in anger as I stared him dead in the eye, finding myself growing more heated as the seconds ticked on into minutes. It wasn't just the fact that I was a stranger. It wasn't just the fact that I was a woman. It wasn't just the fact that Namjoon would have to see my face from here on out. I was an outsider; I was nothing like him or the others in more ways than just one and he hated that I was now his equal in the household.
"Why do you have to be like this?" I hissed.
Namjoon took a few steps closer until I had to recoil. He towered above me and I felt an uneasy shiver work its way down my spine.
"I'm sorry that I don't associate well with sluts like you."
"NAMJOON!"
I sat in awkward silence as the platinum-haired man pulled away from me, his brows furrowed defensively. He shoved both hands into the pockets of his shorts and leaned back with a sense of calmness that made me feel more than unwelcome in the same house he slept in. My eyes narrowed more in exhaustion than anger and with the pop of my tongue, I shoved past him and the others through the kitchen and exited the front door without another word.
