Zee:
Zee slid off her shoes and walked onto the sand. Across the empty playground, in the shadows, Aria and Arianna sat on the swings. The breeze ruffled the leaves of the trees, and the shadows of the equipment gave the whole park an eerie effect.
Zee walked towards the other two girls, the fine sand embedding itself in her feet. She walked slowly, wondering if she was doing the right thing. Was it worth keeping her friends if it meant putting them in danger? Was it worth risking her entire career? But then she thought of him. He would have wanted her to tell them. And she decided to listen to him.
She stopped in the shadows of a slide, and waited for Aria or Arianna to say something. They didn’t. The three girls stared at each other, waiting for one of them to say something. No one did.
They stood like that - Well, Zee stood. The other two sat - for a few minutes. Finally, Arianna got up and walked a few steps ahead, and Aria followed suit. Soon, there was only a few feet between them.
A few more minutes of silence. Arianna awkwardly fiddled with her hair. Aria nervously tapped her foot on the ground, so the only noise was the sound of crunching sand, and the occasional rustle of leaves.
After another few agonizing moments, Zee broke the silence. "Sooo...."
Aria replied, "Soooo...". Then the silence returned. Arianna shook her head, hair bouncing under her beany. "We came here for a reason. Can we get it over with?"
Zee smiled to herself. Aria had always been the more down to earth one. Yet, something seemed to be holding her back. Zee shrugged the thought away. Aria was probably just wondering what Zee was about to tell them.
"Are you sure you want to know?"
The girls nodded.
"It’s a long story, one that would probably put you in grave danger. Probably make you hate me. Probably get me killed, or worse, you guys killed." Zee said, her voice grim, "Are you absolutely sure you want to know?"
The girls nodded again, though slightly hesitantly. "Well, this will be a lot to take in, so why don’t we have a seat," Zee said, gesturing to the slide. Aria sat on the slide, and Arianna sat on one end of the see-saw. Zee chose to settle on the sand.
She picked up a small leaf and began unconsciously tearing it apart, letting the bits be carried away in the breeze. She began to speak, nervously, "See, my parents were assassins. Well, they were assassins by todays standards. back that time, they were considered common criminals. When I was about seven, they were killed by the government.
Now, I knew nothing about this, their background, who they actually were. I was told that they were killed in a fight at the bar. I never questioned it. After all, the police were always right, weren't they?" Zee stopped to let out a bitter laugh.
"When I turned fifteen, doubts entered my mind. I had been shipped off to live with my aunt, here, in the states. But I hated it." She continued, then paused. "No offence," She added as an after thought.
"None taken," Aria murmured.
"Anyways, I knew that UK would always be my home. I ran away and managed to sneak onto a small ship which was going to Europe. The moment I stepped foot on that ship, my life as a fugitive began. I got to Europe, and uncovered the truth about my parents.
By finding the right people, and talking my way up, I managed to learn and do just what my parents had done, if only to get revenge on the police.
They weren't even good police, who cared about the people. No, they were corrupt. All they wanted was money. Either way, I did the world a favor when I killed them, fat ugly slobs that they were."
She stopped for a breath, then continued. "Well, after that, I just got better and better. I became the best in my profession, there was only one who could call himself equal to me..." The last part was barely a whisper.
"Basically, im here on assignment. I'm older than I seem. But..." Zee wanted to say, that she didn't want to do it. She wanted to say that she couldn't. But her friends wouldn’t believe her. They would think she was making up petty excuses. So she kept her mouth shut.
So instead, she decided to see what her friends thought. Zee stared at her friends faces, judging, calculating their reactions. Unfortunately both faces were annoyingly blank.
Arianna spoke first. "So what you're saying is that you're an international criminal, and you're here undercover?"
Zee nodded. Aria spoke up, "You can't expect us to belie-".
Arianna elbowed her in the ribs midsentence. "What Aria means to say, is, say hypothetically, we believe you. But why should we trust that you wont, i dont know, shoot us after this is all done because we know too much?"
Zee bit her lip, not answering.
"That's what i thought. We cant trust you. You've probably been lying to us all this while." Aria spat.
Arianna shot her a look that said 'calm down you're making the situation worse' but Aria continued. "Zee probably isn't even you're real name! You probably look totally different! Is anything about you not a lie?"
"My eyes" Zee said softly, looking up at Aria.
"What?"
"My eyes. They're real." Zee said, her voice stronger, "Now look into my eyes and tell me if I'm lying when i say that I'm asking you to trust me because I trusted you enough to tell you who I am and i trusted you enough to keep my secret because that's the kind of people you are. You don't know how big of a risk I'm taking telling you this! I don't care though, because I trust you! But if you cant trust me back, maybe i was wrong!"
And with a swish of her hair, Zee got up and strode out of the room, not glancing behind her until she exited.
Noah:
Noah sat on the grass, his sneakers wet and muddy. He had gotten discharged from the hospital a few days before and the boredom was consuming him. So he decided to take a hike through the woods. He hadn't planned it out that well, and it was taking it's toll now. He was tired, lost and alone. His phone had no reception, and he was probably miles from any civilization.
He was trying to clean some mud off his shoes when he heard the crinkling of a metal fence. He hid behind a clump of rocks, his mind forcing him to think of bears, and even worse, a dog. Noah shuddered, concealing himself as quickly as he could.
He heard a slight thump, and a few moments later, a girl walked into the clearing. It took him a moment to realize that it was Zee. Her hair was tied up in a messy bun, and she was wearing a teal hoodie, but the hood wasn't over her head. Her mascara and kohl was smudged, and she looked like she had walked through hell and back. Her jeans had splotches of mud everywhere, and was ripping at parts. Not that Noah looked any better.
He was about to show himself, when he decided to see where she was going first. She walked out of the small cluster of trees that they were in, into the foliage. He got up as slowly as possible and trailed behind, making sure he was always a meter or two behind.
Once Zee stopped and perked her ears slightly. Noah thought he was compromised, but when she kept on walking, he realized he wasn't.
They finally emerged into a large clearing. Well, Zee emerged. Noah hid behind a tree. From where he was, he couldn’t make out much of what was there, but he could tell that it was beautiful. The grass seemed greener, the sky bluer. The rocks were covered in moss, and a small spring held crystalline water. 'The grass is greener on the other side,' Noah mused, smiling slightly.
He watched as Zee settled down on a rock with her back to a tree. She was facing the entrance with an amused look. "Noah? I know you're there. You can come out now."
Noah froze. So she had seen him after all. With a sigh, he walked out from around the tree and stepped into the clearing.
She raised her eyebrows, "You're a mess, you know."
Noah muttered something about how she didn't look much better, but Zee just laughed. Then they didn’t say anything for a while. Noah took the opportunity to look at her up close. She was wearing a dark shirt underneath her hoodie, and the messy bun and smudged makeup seemed to make her look even more endearing.
He realized her was staring, and he looked away quickly, feeling the heat rise to his face.
"So. Why are you here?" Zee asked.
"I'm kinda....lost" He replied, sheepishly.
Zee smiled, then patted the rock next to her. "Come join me. I can get us out of here, but I like this place. Why don’t we stay here a while?"
"But, its getting dark. Really fast." Noah objected.
Zee shrugged, "You're free to find your way out."
Noah reluctantly settled down next to her.
Zee:
Zee stood in the mirror of her little dorm and hastily wiped away all the smudged make up. She changed into a pair of shorts and a loose tee and settled down for bed. When it was as dark as Zee wanted it to be, she had stood up, and Noah had stood up with her. They had walked out of the clearing and a little way and come to a road. Walking a little more, they came to a fence marking the end of a small children's park. Right before climbing over, she had kissed him, knowing it would probably be her last kiss with him, and then raced over the fence and home.
Sitting in that clearing, the picture of serenity, Zee realized that she had to kill Noah. her time really was running out. The next day, she would invite him over, a quick bullet to the head and she would be gone. Never to be found again. Zee would have died along with Noah. And her actual self, would be far away, probably roaming around in France.
With a smile, she drew her covers up to her head. This would be her easiest mission yet. He didn't suspect a thing. With that happy thought, she closed her eyes.
Yet sleep wouldn't come. Thinking of Noah made her think of...him. How he had died in her arms. She thought back to the day that they had first met...
She leaned against the cabinet, a frown on her face. The burly man in front of her was telling her that she was no longer to work alone. They had found someone worthy of her partnership. The door opened and a lean man walked in. He had tousled dark hair and mischievous blue eyes. He was wearing a dark shirt underneath a teal jacket...
She had kept that jacket to this day. She remembered feeling as though he would screw everything up, but no. He had been the best thing that had happened to her. And she remembered, that, a few months later, they had fallen in love.
The Eiffel tower behind them gleamed in the sun. They sat at that café, a pastry sitting untouched. Slowly, they leaned over, and shared their first kiss. Sweet, slow, steady. With happiness lingering even after it had stopped. His blue eyes had sparkled as he looked into her violet ones. And that was the first time she had felt truly happy. Not smug, not triumphant. Happy.
Zee thought of all their covert operations together. She thought of all the times they had helped each other, all the times the saved each other. Then she thought about how he was the only one. The only one person in the world, who knew her true name.
And then she thought of the day when her world came crashing down around her. He had died in her arms, and it was all because he had been too selfless for his own good...and she too selfish. He had asked her to promise him one thing. Just one, simple thing. yet she couldn't keep that promise. Because she was an idiot. Everyone had thought that she was great, the best. But they didn't realize how much better of a person that he was.
And with that thought, and tears threatening to spill from her eyes, sleep finally came.
