Ever since you moved in with your girlfriend Ayame, your apartment was never quiet. There was always some sort've noise, whether it was her streaming noises in the background, or her contented humming or even just the sound of her katanas clinking together.
So to say you were on high alert when you could hear a pin drop, was an understatement.
Even if Ayame was trying to prank you, you were certain you'd be able to hear the sound of muffled giggling. She could be out doing things, but Ayame would've told you if she was going out. Plus, her twin katanas were still in their display case and she never went anywhere without them.
That was until you felt your hair be tussled by an silent breeze. You instantly turned your head around to see who was there, but only Jirusuke stared back at you from his cat tower. The cat flicked his ear before curling up into a ball of fur.
You were getting a little worried now. Ayame was missing or hiding from you, and then a sudden breeze was in the apartment, which was impossible since all the windows were closed and you didn't have the air conditioner on.
A quick tap on your left shoulder made you spin around again. You leaned against the back of the couch and looked around the apartment once more, still seeing nothing out of the ordinary.
Then, right in your right ear
"Yo dayo~"
You almost jumped out of your skin hearing the sudden voice. You turned around to see Ayame laughing in that adorable fashion she did. She was dressed in an oversized sweater, one of your own. It hung down past her hands, which made it even more adorable when she tried to hide her smile behind her hands.
You sighed and placed a hand of your now calming down heart and gave her a playful glare, which Ayame just smiled at, showing off her pointed canines.
"Ayame, you almost gave me a heart attack" You took a deep breath. Ayame suddenly frowned a little, not really understanding you weren't being literal. The oni jumped forward, sending you both tumbling on to the couch. you were about to say something, but Ayame pressed her ear up to your chest. Neither of you said anything for a few moments.
"Uhm, Ayame? What are you doing?" The oni didn't say anything and just sat up, staring you in the eyes. She was still frowning somewhat, looking guilty.
"Is your heart ok?" She whispered, her tone somewhat tentative. You reached up and gave her a few gentle headpats, leaning up somewhat.
"It's okay, Ayame. It's just an expression! It just means you scared me, you don't need to worry" Ayame still seemed unconvinced as she tugged at the oversized hoodie sleeves nervously. She just nodded and gently lowered her head to listen to your heartbeat again. You had to move your head around in order not to be poked by her horns.
"What are you doing hun?" She saw hints of pink appear on Ayame's face as she became flushed at the pet name. She just hummed and tilted her head slightly to look up at you while keeping her head on your chest.
"I'm listening to your heartbeat. I need to make sure it's okay".
You smiled and pulled the oni into a tight hug, running your fingers through her hair comfortingly. Ayame smiled too, returning the embrace, listening to the rhythmic beat of your heart.
Feeling the comforting heat Ayame radiated, you felt your eyelids sliding close as a pleasant warmth spread throughout your body. Just as you slipped into unconsciousness, you heard a high-pitched yawn escape Ayame's lips before she settled her head on your chest again before she too fell asleep.
