This chapter is courtesy of me,as today's celebrant. Happy birthday to me🥳.

Daryl

"Omo,John Boko dey crase oh,he is now having mind abi" Yomi exclaimed, banging our room door against the wall and making our arrival known to the full block.

"Its not now we will answer that guy, leave his matter first. Make we chop" Sele suggested as he and Andrew plopped down on the cream tiled floor in Yomi's corner.

"Where Temi say he dey go?" Yomi directed at me,joining Sele and Andrew on the floor. "They are preparing for J1 people na,him and Oghale have work" I explained to them.

"Chai, ehya. Abeg make him no forget our match for evening o" Yomi told me as I got to straightening the black, with white polka dots sheets of my bed which I hadnt been able to do before I left.

"Daryl, you get extra sauce? This bread dey do me dry dry" Andrew questioned,I noticed Collins take a seat on Yomi's bed as he did.

Before I could give Andrew a reply,Yomi beat me to it. "This one wey carry all the  extra sauce for this life put for babe" Yomi hissed.

"Ahah, new babe already? Who abeg?" Andrew questioned. "Shut up idiot, its not any new babe" I fired at Andrew.

"Guy calm down na,no be fight o" Sele laughed. "Na girl dey make you vex like this?" Yomi added with a chuckle. Sometimes I wondered why I still kept Yomi as a friend.

"What happened?" Temi's voice cut through our conversation as he walked into the hostel. "Omo,na babe dey make Daryl dey para o" Sele laughed.

"Why una dey do like this na? I don talk anything about babe since?" I questioned, taking out a bucket from under my bed, placing a pillow on it and then using it as a chair.

"Wait o,Daryl how far our bet na?" Collins finally spoke up,I felt my gaze grow fiery as I averted it to him. "Anytime you dey open mouth,na so so nonsense dey fall comot" I fired at him.

"But deal is deal na,abi make we run check on Kainene..." I cut him off, feeling disgust creeping up my skin just hearing him talking that way about her. For the first time,I felt disgusted for actually subscribing to Collins's madness,I should never had agreed to his stupid bet.

"Shut up guy,abi na 10k,I go give you. Just shut the fuck up" I told him. "Nawa o,Okay" Collins shrugged, not being able to hold back his happiness from winning our bet seeing how a smile graced his lips even though he tried to hold it back.

"Nawa o,Collins you sef you no dey give up something?" Temi questioned, taking something out of his wardrobe which sat at the extreme end of the aisle of the room.

"I no even know for the guy. Abi e don reach you Collins" Yomi added before taking a huge gulp from his tea mug. "Abeg,Daryl you don chop?" Sele questioned, turning to where I now lay on my bed in a white singlet and a pair of boxers as I'd taken off every other thing.

"No abeg,I go chop later" I told him, shutting my eyes and willing myself to sleep. "You sure say you dey okay guy?" Temi questioned.

"I dey okay abeg,I just wan sleep. You're going to auditorium right?" I questioned Temi. "Yeah,we have stuff to arrange" he told me.

"Okay no wahala...Abeg you guys should wake me up by 10,Andrew you can take my sauce if you want" I suggested, feeling a slight pang in my head as I rested it down on my pillow.

I'd been through a whirlpool of emotions in just one week and I couldnt understand why I was letting it happen. Why wasn't I stopping myself from wanting? Why did I keep allowing myself to slowly get attracted to her?

Why did I get so upset on Friday after seeing what she did? Even though I'd been upset, why did remorse hit me the moment she walked away? Why did a part of me want her to actually get angry instead of acting like I could never be a bother to her?

Why did every rational thought in my brain drain the minute I saw her in distress? I could neither understand nor comprehend what I felt when she'd clung unto my arm and somehow,I longed to feel it again. Why did I feel so relieved after calling off the bet with Collins? I'd felt like I could finally breathe fresh air, like I'd just been released from chains.

I shut my eyes tight, willing my headache to stop and trying to catch the littlest amount of sleep I could before heading to the school block to get our debate done. Why did that thought bring me a weird form of happiness?

Kainene

The sound of an alarm cut through the eerie silence of my room, bringing me out of the Economics assignment I'd been battling with.

Onome and Jade had drifted off the sleep immediately after having their baths, the junior students had cleaned and scrubbed the room and most of them had now exited the hostel as a whole,in their attempt to run away from the errands of senior students.

"Abike, what's the time?" I questioned the last of the junior students, who sat knelt before her bunk as she'd been punished by her SS2 bunky for reasons best known to her.

"10:05" she told me and I nodded, shutting the books before me and climbing off my bed. "Rosemary, you're the one that punished Abike right?" I questioned the girl who just walked into the room with her two bathing buckets in hand, clad in her pink fluffy housecoat and a towel resting over her shoulder.

"Yes o. Kainene, you wont even believe what she did" she started, dropping her buckets before her bunk. I nodded, getting ready to listen to her whole story and I took out my daywear from beneath my pillow and began to straighten my bed.

Rosemary and I had a slight cordial relationship, rather than the other SS2 student and SS1 student who occupied the last two beds at the down of the bunks,on the opposite side of the room.

"I told this girl to sweep and scrub since morning,no o,she did it after food. Okay fash that one. On top of everything, she na still came and misplaced my Sunday school shoe,I dont know if she wants me to wear her head tomorrow to church" She explained, placing a knock on Abike's head afterwards.

"Abike why na?" I questioned, zipping my gown up and taking out my palm slippers. "Just leave her,her own has finished today" Rosemary finished off with a hiss. I pitied Abike inwardly, knowing that Rosemary wasnt the type to joke.

"Kainene, this one you're spraying perfume,is there a special occasion?" Jade slurred from where she lay on Onome's bed as they'd done a funny switch.

"Abeg e,I'm going to do my debate something, see you guys later. Rosemary, please try not to kill Abike abeg" I called out. "Tell her to find my school shoe ni" Rosemary called back, earning a chuckle from me as I walked out of the hostel.

I threaded at a comfortable pace, believing that I wasnt in any way rushing for anything. As I walked,I got engrossed for the first time,in trying to gather points on my debate topic.

"That one wont really make sense like that" I murmured under my breath as I found myself already ascending the stairs which led to my classroom. I'd been so deep in thought that I hadnt realised when I'd gotten to the school block.

The shuffling of feet behind me as I turned on the second flight of stairs had me looking down, finally noticing that someone was walking behind me,I felt almost startled.

"Jesus,Daryl don't tell me you've been behind me since" I commented as we walked into the class. "I actually have,I can't believe you didn't notice all the while" he replied, his voice coming out a bit more raspy than usual as he settled into his seat, two seats behind mine.

"I was thinking about the debate something, that's why I didnt notice" I told him, sitting in such a way that I was facing him, which was opposite the normal way one would normally sit,so my legs were sticking out under the table behind mine.

"Ohhh" he replied, turning to the junior student who' d followed him all the way here. "Drop it and go na" he ordered, referring to his books and food which the junior student had carried for him. He did just as he was told before walking out of the class.

"You've not eaten?" I questioned, flipping my jotter open. "Not yet" he replied, grabbing the small loaf of bread from the table.

"Thank you for the sauce sha,but how did you know my room? I asked. "I asked Temi, you're welcome" he replied lowly, clearing his voice afterwards and still fumbling with his loaf of bread. I watched him silently, noticing his reluctance to eat the bread.

"What about your own sauce? Or are you going to eat the bread dry like that?" I questioned again. "I dont even want to eat it" he confirmed my suspicion, placing the bread back on the table.

"Daryl, are you sick?" I questioned after a while of silence, making him look to me. "Why? Do I look sick?" He questioned back.

"Sort of,your body felt kind of hot in the morning" I shrugged, not wanting to come off like I'd worried too much about it because I actually hadnt.

When I didnt get a reply,I looked back up only to noticing that he'd been staring right at me,he looked away when I caught his gaze though.

"I've been feeling somehow since yesterday" he told me. "Was that the reason for your attitude yesterday?"I questioned.

"Not really though" he replied. "Oh,so you agree you were giving me an attitude yesterday?" I asked him, earning a slight chuckle from him.

"Anyway sha, please eat your bread so that we'll do this thing and then we can go to the infirmary" I told him. "Okay,as long as you're going with me sha" he smiled, picking his bread up again.

Looking to him one more time,I decided to shrug off his last comment. I didnt see the need to keep dissing him anymore because if I was going to get over with this debate as soon as possible. Besides,at least he'd been nice to me this morning and I felt grateful for that. Maybe he wasnt all that bad a person, just maybe.

"Goodday ladies and gentlemen..." I was caught off immediately I started by the only person I was currently in class with on this faithful saturday morning.

"Who is the ladies and gentlemen? These my yeye classmates?" He laughed. "Daryl be serious na" I complained, even though I'd found it funny too.

"Sorry sorry, continue" he urged. We were currently in the process of trying to present our points which we'd managed to rack out of our brains in the past one hour.

"I really think we have to research some of these things" I suggested yet again after we'd practised, propping down tiredly on my seat. "But the points we have arent bad na" he cleared his throat for the nth time since we entered the class.

"I know but let's just do small research on it,maybe we will get more points." I told him. "But it's not that hard na. You said it that time, everybody knows English has made our mother language a bit forgotten. Like how in the days of the old, people practically conversed in our mother tongue but since these British people came and brought their language, kids of nowadays cant even hear their language, not to talk about speaking it" he explained. My lips etched downwards as I watched him babble.

"Ehenhen,so if you have all these things in your head, why am I the one gathering points and you're only expanding them?" I questioned. "Because maybe as I'm expanciating,I'll add some extra effects na" he replied.

"Okay o,let's be going then." I declared, taking to my feet and gathering my things. "Ahah,we are going already?" He inquired,I detected the slur in his tone.

"We've practically divided the work so we know what we are both doing. Theres no issue again" I told him. "And we have to stop by the infirmary before while it's still morning so that you can take at least something that can help you" I told him.

"Oh,its true. I almost forgot we were going there too" he chided, taking to his feet too and gathering own things.

"I thought you said you would be busy today?" I mocked as we descended the stairs, earning a chuckle from him. I felt like I was getting used to the sound if his frequent husky chuckling.

"Its in the evening,I have a match with my guys" he explained. "As you're sick so,you'll still play football?" I questioned.

"I might not play full time sha,so it will be okay" he told me. "Okay o,I wish you the best of luck" I shrugged as we walked down the apian way.

"You sound like you're waiting for me to break my leg" he laughed. "Actually I am,it will be like film trick" I found myself actually laughing too as we reached the front of the infirmary.

Luckily, the nurse didnt take much time to prescribe a medication for Daryl. He took his morning dosage and we were back to our walk to our hostels.

"That breaking leg thing is scary sha" he was the first to initiate a conversation in our silent walk. "Why do you say so?" I asked.

"One junior guy in my hostel broke his leg one time and started having nocturnal enuresis" he told me.

"What's nocturnal...." I was just about to ask when it clicked in my head and I looked his way. He nodded, confirming that what had come to my mind was exactly the case, which had me bursting into a fit of laughter.

"Its not funny but like...its the way you just said nocturnal enuresis that's funny, when you could have just said bedwetting." I panted between my laughs, looking at him to catch him yet again staring at me,this time with a smile etched on his lips.

"What na?" I chuckled. "Nothing nothing" he smiled. "I know sha,I just decided to say it like that" he replied my question. "So he was na bedwetting,chai.. ehya" I sympathised. "Did he sha stop?" I questioned.

"He stopped sha,but it was later later" he told me. "Abi you're seeing,if you like still go and play football this evening yeah. What I will tell you when it happens is sorry" I laughed as we got to the normal parting intersection.

"Nothing will happen joorh" he breezed. "Okay o,bye!" I called, walking off in the direction of my hostel. "Yeah, bye" he called back. I gave a low chuckle as I walked, thinking about our conversation again. Well, perhaps I was right after all. Perhaps he wasnt that bad.
