by lunch time, melanie found herself sitting next to bella, joori, shotaro, and chenle as the others were still probably just leaving class. renjun and lucas typically ate lunch by themselves unless they were interested in what the rest of the crew was doing.
yangyang sat with hendery a lot of the time, and so did sooyoung which did piss off melanie. it bugged her that yangyang is aware of the bad things she did and still maintains the friendship with her. it was either pity or love, but either way, it irked melanie.
or maybe she was just telling herself that, because she was actually bugged that hendery was okay with it. but she had to let that go.
xiaojun typically sat with them, but because of the sooyoung drama he would rather not. instead mark and him would go around the school and trying to get things done before graduation. mark was a bit of a nerd.
donghyuck would regularly go with mark, but clearly mark replaced him. and melanie doesn't even see donghyuck at lunch anymore, so she assumes he might go with jisung.
park jisung was a part of the robotics team, so he would spend his lunch with his group trying to perfect the robot. secretly though, he just needed to be away from bella for at least a little bit longer.
jaemin was a popular dude. the entire group was very well known around the school, but hearts skipped for jaemin, so he is quite a social butterfly. he jumps from table to table, it keeps him entertained.
then there was jeno who also sat by hendery and them, but the tables were really close so it was a back and forth kind of thing.
"it's either harry styles or zayn malik, and zayn has a baby so clearly harry is the winner." shotaro included his input in the argument of who got the best after the split of one direction.
bella gasped, shaking her head, "zayn got a baby! and a model wife! and a successful ass career. he is obviously the winner?"
"in what world would a baby be better than like.. harry styles?" chenle asked, siding with shotaro. "joori, please decide."
"look.. if i had to pick a life.. it'd be zayn." joori slowly agreed with bella, both of the boys groaning.
"why did we ask the lesbian if she'd rather be married to a hot girl or be talented. she will always choose the hot girl!" chenle yelled, and then the four turned to melanie. "well?"
melanie furrowed her eyebrows, looking between the two groups. oh great, she had to be the last one. "i decide... that i want a coke."
mel stood up, chuckling at her friends who all yelled for her to return as she walked to the vending machine at the end of the cafeteria.
she arrived at the vending machine, and put her dollar in only to have it spit it back out. that happened at least four more times, and the girl became frustrated, kicking the machine lightly. "asshole."
"it's backwards." the familiar voice behind her said, as melanie turned to look at him. "the dollar, i mean. doesnt matter how many times you straighten it out it's gonna be backwards."
"thats— i knew that." melanie nodded, giving him a smile as he gave a small chuckle. "do you also want a coke?"
"no i just came to stand behind you awkwardly and correct your vending machine skills." hendery responded sarcastically, and it melted her.
"i forgot that breathing and sarcasm is basically the same to you."
"that hurts, sarcasm is quite literally my only personality trait and you forgot it?" hendery grabbed onto his heart.
"thats not your only personality trait, you seem to forget the cooking one. i think your cooking trait trumps your sarcasm trait." melanie pointed, making a good point as she bent down to get her coke.
she moved slightly, allowing hendery to put in his dollar, but still didn't walk away in hopes of continuing the conversation.
"okay well then your personality traits are making inappropriate jokes and fighting with sooyoung." hendery raised his eyebrows, mel gasping and then the two laughing after. "okay no, your personality trait is bad driving."
"bad driving?" melanje gasped, raising her voice as hendery got his drink.
"oh come on, i literally saw you drive on the curb while pulling into school this morning." hendery argued, but his point was already made.
"as bad at driving as i am, everyone still seems to want me as a chauffeur." melanie replied, the two beginning to walk to an empty table, having fun while the caught up.
"that's because you're the only person nice enough to give them rides. notice how renjun hasn't needed a ride at all since he got his boyfriend." hendery told her, and mel looked up, realizing that was true.
"i'm not that nice, you know. i can be a total bitch if i want."
"ah yes, a bitchy melanie. everyones worst fear." hendery smirked, being sarcastic once again.
"okay, asshole. i am a bitch, why do you think sooyoung hates me?" melanie raised her eyebrows, using her unfortunate drama to her advantage.
hendery smiled, looking up at the girl as they both sat down at the lunch table, opening their drinks they just got from the vending machine.
"sooyoung hates you, because she's the bitch." hendery giggled, feeling like he just did something evil. even melanie had to hide her smile.
"a bitch you eat lunch with." melanie pointed out, regretting it afterwards.
"oh yeah, who am i with right now?" hendery asked, and the girl failed to hide her happiness.
after a couple second of quiet, the both opened their mouth to talk, but then stopped talking to give the other a chance to speak, it was horrible and awkward to the two.
luckily, the girl was saved as her friend slid into the seat with them, throwing down his baseball bat on the table and seemed quite exhausted.
"okay, baseball is officially over for the year so no more staying after school for that god awful man who makes us run like four thousand laps. now i wont be sweaty and you won't have to complain anymore." sungchan rambled and then looked over at hendery, waving at him with his delicate hands, "hi."
"hey sungchan, i completely forgot you were on the baseball team." hendery continued the conversation, not having spoken with sungchan for a small while.
"yeah, i joined a while ago because the coaches here would not stop forcing me to join a sport. i think my height definitely made them assume i was athletic." sungchan shrugged, being a natural at conversations when he was comfortable.
mel patted her friends shoulder, then realizing he was sweaty. "but you are athletic. everytime i stay after school and watch you play, you are an alpha on the field."
"ew, mel, don't say alpha." sungchan told her, the two laughing.
"hendery used to play football." mel brought up, as sungchan turned to face the older one. hendery nodded, but he felt uncomfortable with the attention.
"i played for like two days, melanie." hendery laughed, "and in those days i managed to get a concussion."
"see, we are all talented in different ways." mel clapped, the other two laughing.
as they continued their conversation, melanie turned to see a random freshman taking a photo of her and realized she was definitely on student council.
only then, did she remember she was a prime victim in the school gossip. and she was sitting with two boys, which made her all the more guilty.
the girl looked around as sungchan and hendery spoke, and realized their were multiple people whispering or talking judge-mentally and melanie was convinced they were all speaking about her.
melanie looked down, her eyes watering but she tried to hide it. she didnt want to be the schools slut and also the schools crybaby.
hendery was the first to notice, and he slowly stopped talking. however, he knew melanie would hate the shift of conversation to fall on her so he instead kept talking.
but sungchan noticed after, and didn't keep talking. "melanie.. let's take a walk."
melanie didn't feel like standing up or talking, but sungchan was a very convincing person.
"hendery dude, you should join the groupchat again. you're fun to talk to." sungchan waved to him, the two younger students walking away from the quad.
melanie felt the eyes on her, and tried not to be noticeable to others because she hated the attention she has been getting.
"are you okay? lets sit here." sungchan told her, leading her inside of the empty multipurpose room. "i dont really know what to do in these moments but i'm here so just talk.. or don't.. whatever you feel comfortable with."
"i'm just feeling a bit anxious." melanie stated, wiping her tears away, because she of course failed at not crying. "and im so sick of crying."
"why anxious?" sungchan asked.
"because i felt like everyone was talking about me. they hate me, i didn't even do anything." melanie explained, feeling even sadder.
"i know people are being mean to you, but i promise you not everybody was talking about you." sungchan replied, then lowered his head as he realized his mistake.
melanie smiled at him, "wow you really do suck at this."
"well i'm not a liar!" sungchan joked around, then watched as she wiped away another tear. "you dont need to hate crying. crying is good."
"stop it, crying is good but when you do it all the time its awful. i cry so much, i guess this is the part where i blame my zodiac sign." melanie argued, and thought about her cancer tendencies.
"i think you are the most you when you cry." sungchan shrugged, punching her lightly on the shoulder.
"why do you want to be around me when i'm most me? thats the worst me there is!" mel asked dramatically.
sungchan smiled, "i'm a big fan of people being exactly who they are. sue me."
after a bit of quiet, sungchan decided to voice his thoughts. "does this have to do with hendery?"
"what?" mel looked up, shocked. "no."
"oh, okay."
"i mean its a bit odd that we just talked like nothing, but no. he wasn't making me anxious at all." melanie nodded, and sungchan just decided not to talk on that subject anymore.
"maybe it was the orange juice."
"orang— what?" melanie laughed, and sungchan just shrugged.
"i just wanted to ease the silence?"
"you're so weird."
"sorry."
"its a good thing, sungie."
