The logic behind the question threw Caleb off balance for a moment. He wondered to himself why he hadn't considered it even though he knew it was certainly possible to reheat food. Cooking something and eating it straight away was such a given that he hadn't bothered mentioning being able to heat it up again for later consumption.
"My dear Dave, you've caught me trying to impose a norm on you regarding when one should eat their food. In fact; food and most everything else that was once hot and has since gone cold can be reheated.
I suppose I told you to eat it while it's hot because it's such a habit to do so. Although I do have to say that the food does taste best directly after it's been cooked. You can eat it cold or make it hot again and eat it then but it'll be slightly less tasty the longer you wait with actually eating it, cold or otherwise."
This answer pleased Dave and he looked at his plate with a renewed sense of interest.
"I'll eat it now." He said decisively.
Caleb nodded at him and smirked. Then he recalled his intention to tell Dave about his origins and the impending arrival of another one such as him in a month's time. Pushing some of the meat around on his plate he wondered how best to begin the conversation.
"Dave," He started. Dave looked up from his plate, saw the thoughtful expression on Caleb's face and gave a slight, confused frown.
Caleb cast him a comforting smile which Dave returned, feeling relieved.
"I'd like to talk to you about something that might be very confusing for you. I'd like you to know, before I start, that it's perfectly alright for you to feel confused. I'll try to answer as many questions as I can. Just know that you're every bit as valuable as other people, perhaps even more so.
Alright?"
The small speech had the intention to make Dave feel calm and safe but Caleb noticed the slight frown returning. Perhaps he sounded a bit too serious. It was something to watch out for.
"Okay," Dave replied as he put his fork and knife down in anticipation.
"Okay," Caleb echoed as he fished around in his mind for the first words to get them started.
"I'm going to assume that your first memories are of being about the same size and age as you are now, living inside a small room in a place where you were told lots of different things, had tests taken and the like. Am I right?"
Nodding, Dave regarded him with a hint of caution in his eyes.
"Right. And then after a while you were brought in to a room to meet some people, one of whom you instantly recognized."
Feeling slightly perturbed Dave cast Caleb a worried glance.
"How do you know all this? Were you there?"
Caleb shook his head.
"No, but when I found you you were wearing clothes from the Numan corporation, which is the place you remember being before I met you on the monorail."
"Numan," Dave repeated.
"Yes," Caleb confirmed. "It's a place where, ehh...
Well, let me try something else. We've already been through a few things with regard to technology and such. The people in this world are capable of creating many great things. We've only just scratched the surface.
One thing in particular will be of interest to you and that is the capability of some companies, such as Numan, to create life."
"How can one create life?" Dave asked as Caleb noticed that they were already catching on but seemed unwilling to spell it out just yet.
