Cooking with Dave at his side was the first of a long line of exercises in patience. The dinner turned out just fine but Caleb found it hard to stop and explain every step of the way. Normally he would just chop the ingredients up, throw them in a pan with some spices and cook the lot until it was done.
Now he found himself having to explain how a cooker works, how pans were made, where the meat and vegetables came from and why putting them in the pan was necessary at all. He couldn't help but smile as Dave's young, inquisitive mind reminded him of his early school years, wanting to know the why and how behind everything that came his way.
He also remembered how that used to frustrate parents, aunts, uncles, teachers and the like and how they would sometimes just tell him 'because' in order to move on to doing something else. He did find it enjoyable if a little tiresome and had the sense to tell Dave to write all of these things down.
After all they would undoubtedly forget some of the information so having documentation on the whole thing would become very useful. The other reason Caleb was keen to have Dave detailing everything he had learned was so he could use the same document to answer some of the questions Nathan would be asking as well.
'Speaking of Nathan', Caleb thought as they sat down at the kitchen table to eat their thoroughly examined and explained meal, 'Perhaps I ought to tell him about Nathan as soon as possible to keep it from being too great of a surprise.'
The first appointment to go see his Nathan was only a week away. He couldn't bring Dave with him as some Numan employees might recognize him and try to 'recall their faulty product' on the spot. Reminding himself to check Numan's policies on transferring CML ownership on their information page he glanced at Dave.
Dave was still working out how forks came in to existence and he chattered away merrily as he gathered pieces of this puzzle. Caleb told him at length about metal ores that could be found under ground and in mountain ranges after which he had to explain what a mountain was, exactly. Once they had worked their way through tectonic plates and the movements of the Earth's crust Caleb tried his best to describe Man's history of metal working without it becoming too complicated.
To his surprise and relief Dave wasn't finding any of it hard to understand. Caleb noted that Dave's brain was as eager to absorb new information just as a dry sponge gladly soaks up water. Even though Caleb's knowledge on foundries and construction was limited together they managed to get a fairly good picture on paper of the whole process from mining operation to finished products leaving the factory on their way to consumers.
Now that the cutlery had been researched Dave used the fork to push some of the food out of the way so he could get a better look at the ceramic plate on which it all sat. He looked up as the next questions started forming in his eyes when Caleb smiled at him and held up a single hand.
"We'll get to that some other time. For now just make sure to eat the food before it gets cold." He told him, winking cheerfully at him.
Dave looked like he wanted to say something in mild protest but then changed his mind, focusing on cutting the meat instead.
"What happens when it gets cold?" He asked as he chewed a small chunk of meat carefully.
Caleb shook his head lightly as he piled some vegetables on to his fork.
"Nothing really, it just tastes better hot. Food that's been cooked and has been left to go cold always feels like such a waste because everybody knows it could have been better if they had eaten it sooner."
Dave thought it over, still chewing slowly.
"Once something's been hot and gone cold it can't become hot again?" He asked quite correctly.
