Adjusting my engagement ring, I tapped my acrylics on the counter, grabbing a bottle of water as I sat waiting for my clients to walk in. My fiancé, Derrick, and I came up with this silly idea: to kick things off right, we had just branched off from our mentor company into our own. Although real estate was his dream business, we were black-owned and successful. I learned to love the business and the competitive closing bets we had.
We aimed to have 10 families or singles signed and happy by our wedding date. Luckily for me, the Brents were our hopeful 10th deal on the table to close. Chanté and I were familiar in college till she switched schools during her junior year. Hearing the knob turn on the front door, I felt nervous, anticipating this small reunion. I straightened my pencil skirt and plum blouse as the sound of her heels grew closer.
"This is such a beautiful place! Alexia, baby, I've got to give it to you, girl. You have good taste when it comes to this housing market. The house won me over with the chandelier in the foyer; that is classy at its finest." Chante stood at least 5'7 without heels, yet with them on she was an easy 5'9, perfect hourglass shape with hips that matched her obvious plastic surgery. The booty she had in college wasn't flat, but it wasn't this huge, and her breasts were a regular B cup compared to the perfectly plump DDs she walked in with.
"If you love down here so much, I can't wait for you to see what the rooms upstairs look like. I must say we got lucky with this home. The previous owner's wife was an interior designer, so this home is move-in ready. The two walk-in closets in the master bedroom are my favorites. I love the his and her concept. Bought in shelves on all three walls with a double-sided vanity in the woman's closet."
"My boyfriend told me to just pick a house I loved, and he would handle the rest. I wonder if this counts as the rest. I feel like a rich-ass bitch! Sorry for the language. I know you weren't too fond of the cursing. I remember you being the good girl of the bunch." I watched as she peeked into the bathroom. Standing to my feet, I guided her down the long hall towards the other four bedrooms. Looking over the banister, I noticed my sign was inside next to the door.
"So it's safe to assume you've made your mind up and are ready to close?" I looked down at my watch as we walked into the nursery. The walls were sky blue with hand-painted clouds; the only thing missing was a crib. I sighed, remembering how hard we'd been trying without a drop of luck insight. This home would have been perfect for us, but clients come first.
"Honestly, yes, I'm expecting, and this right here sealed the deal, you know what I mean? If this isn't a sign, I don't know what one is. My boyfriend should be here soon. Let's just finish looking at the last two rooms. Is there a basement? He said something about a damn man cave as if he needed one." She sucked her teeth while pulling out her now vibrating phone.
"Derrick wants a man cave, too. I told him I was here for it, but after the honeymoon, we could discuss it. I just want to get this wedding over and done with. Do you remember Derrick? He was tall on the football team with smooth waves with that one dimple. I got lucky, and I can now tell you that man is even finer with long legs and locs. Being the man he is, my man dyed his hair jet black with auburn tips to match my hair color. Our wedding is hopefully tomorrow at noon at the old mill, depending on whether or not we can seal this deal.
"Say no more, slide me a pen, and contract! I always wondered if you two were a thing back then. You would be all shy at parties till he came over, we all knew you had it in you." Heading down the stairs, I stepped back, stopping in my tracks as a man with a mustard button-down walked into the home.
"Oh, girl, relax. This is Kenneth, my boyfriend, whom I was telling you about. It's so crazy we all went to the same college and barely spoke yet here we are six years later and you're helping us buy a house. The universe is something I tell you." Wiggling her pointer, Chanté walked into the dining room, taking a seat next to his. Giving her the keys and placing my documents in my bag, I smiled as we walked to our separate cars. Throwing my sign into my trunk, I pulled off blasting Mario's music for love. Running all my last-minute errands before my mini bachelorette party with my girls. I stopped by the barbershop to see my man one last time before we were at the altar.
Derrick was getting him and his boy ready with the best barber in the city, despite him being my ex-boyfriend. Unproblematic, he was happy to see someone loving me the right way. I waved from the window before walking in and sitting down on Derrick's lap.
"What are you even doing on this side of town, nosey? You and I both know yo ass never comes over here; you thought you were crashing some shit, huh? Listen, baby, if the guys wanted to get on your bad side, these little niggas would have done so already. Patting his thigh as I got up, I nodded, agreeing with him. Kissing him goodbye, I drove straight to my sister's penthouse, where my party was.
"So you saw Raggedy Ann today; how was that? Is she still up to her tricks at her big age? That one right there knew every damn trick in the book to secure a nigga that wasn't hers. Shit, I'm surprised you got Derrick's ass before her if we're being honest." Pouring patron shots one by one, Angela sipped the rest from the bottle before giving me the side eye.
"Ang! Can we drop it? The woman signed the papers. We are having a fly-away wedding in the morning. All I want to do is get drunk and enjoy my last night as a regular woman with little to no expectations under her belt. Grabbing the Hennessy, I drank straight from the bottle as the remix for Perfect came on. A double knock at the door caused the room filled with laughter to turn silent. Opening the door, Chanté stood there in the doorway with a six-year-old girl.
"I knew your little good girl act was just that, a fucking act! Here's a quick bombshell: You can't get married to a man who's already married! Derrick and I got married when I transferred. This is Kiana, his daughter, and the baby I'm expecting is his as well. One more thing, Kenneth is my man, he's not my brother. I asked him to play along because I had to see for myself before I made a scene, and sure enough, you ran that little mouth of yours, feeling proud about a man that wasn't even yours. Well, since we're proudly sharing news, you should get tested because he gave me an STD, and if I know that man like you know that man, then I know you have it too.
Before she could shut the door, I grabbed her wrist, grinning ear to ear. "Oh baby, no, I went and had that cleared up. You see, I gave it to him when I was fucking Kenneth and Riley; we had a threesome all over that house you signed on today. Your brother may be broke, but that is the best sex I've ever experienced in my life. You know what they say "The broke niggas work the hardest in bed."Now that we have it all out there, I can't wait to see you all at my wedding. I meant to give these to you during the showing, but I just didn't have the heart to."
Handing her a copy of the signed divorce papers with Derrick's signature along with her signature. Checkmate
