Blank Stares and Clean Hands

I feel their stare on my back, their watchful gaze and neutral sentiment. As they watch me drown, watch me fall and fail; and I wish they would reach down and help me, but they do not want to dirty their hands in the murky water of my struggle. And as I slowly sink to the bottom of this endless agony, they fade out of sight and I hear the words they utter,  "there's nothing I could have done". They wash their hands of my suffering without knowing that just one genuine question or action would have lightened the weight that so forcefully dragged me from the light. Just one simple gesture and maybe I could've seen the sun rise again, if only for just one more time.
