The Silence

I stand here

Screaming at the top of lungs

Begging someone to hear

I scream for freedom

Freedom of this prejudice

And impression cast upon me

The sound carries through empty air

For no matter how hard I try

No one cares to hear

So I accept the silence

Turn my back to it

And walk away

I stand here

Now in quiet defiance

Waiting for my chance of freedom

I defy the silence

But I’ve learned that patience is the key

I’ve adapted to take small steps

I wait for others

For help in the revolution

Against the silence of our peers

So I listen

I hear a sound

And runs towards it

I stand here

Watching other like me

See them beg for someone to hear

They scream to break,

Stand against,

And defy the silence

Struggling against their bindings

They twist this way and that

Only to find themselves in tighter ones

So I try to help

I scream, stand, and defy

The horrible, ending silence

I stand here

Reading a poem aloud

Wondering if you get the message

I doubt you do

For people often do not see

The error of their ways

You and I have both done it

Put someone in shackles of our own making

Been stereotypical

So don’t lie and say you haven’t

For I know with absolute certainty

That you have
