Three years later and I was finally inspired to continue Don and Heidi's story. Sometimes I get sad and write sad shit. If you want to be sad with me, listen to CHASING CARS by Snow Patrol while reading this - it's this couple's song. You'll know when to play it.

This was over 14,000 words so grab some snacks, grab some drinks and if you cry easily, grab some tissues. Just some background: Heidi, Donovan, Lyla and Nash met way before Jayden came into the picture.

Please vote (press the star button) if you're reading this and leave me your thoughts and reactions - I promise you're not being annoying by commenting. I love reading your feelings and feedback. Makes my day!

Happy reading, Queenies. I love you.

"You didn't have to go through all this trouble, Gabby." I rub my brother's girlfriend's arm.

Gabriela smiles wide as she unloads a blue frosted cake from a box that reads Le Petit Moulin in beautiful gold calligraphy. She got the good, expensive stuff.

"It's not every day baby Kyle turns nine months. We need to celebrate!"

My mom and Gabriela insist on celebrating each month for Kyle with a mini photoshoot and a pastry. Last month they did a cookie monster cupcake. The month before the last was a vanilla donut with red sprinkles. Of course, Kyle's only allowed the tiniest lick of his birthday dessert. No more than that.

The doorbell rings and my heart jolts, before skyrocketing. It's Donovan. Gabriela busies herself with searching for candles while I dash to the front door. I take a few seconds to compose myself and throw a look in the mirror by the entrance. I look better than presentable for once.

But it's not Don on the other side. It's my late-husband's younger brother Jared.

"Hey, you," he drawls. Then whistles, giving me an appreciative once-over. "Okay, mama is looking fineeee tonight."

I can't help it; I burst into laughter. Jared saunters inside like he owns the place and wraps me in a bear hug. I melt into the embrace. He kisses the top of my head in brotherly affection. "If this is your way of making me feel like crap because I'm always in yoga pants and baggy shirts, then I hate you."
