"And that's time. Pencils down, everyone," my teacher, Mrs. Anderson, said. Taking a deep breath, I dropped my pencil on my desk, completing the last final of my junior year of high school. It was my English final. It was fairly easy, just multiple choice questions about books we'd read that year, but it was the 4th final I'd taken, and I was ready to be done and for the year to be over.
"Congratulations everyone." Mrs. Anderson smiled after the finals were done. "Have a wonderful summer, and I hope to see you around next year!" The bell rang, and I grabbed my stuff to leave.
"Oh, wait - Claire. Hang back for a second." Mrs. Anderson said, sitting back down at her desk.
I spun around and walked towards her. "Yeah?"
"Mrs. Collins wanted to see you before you go. She should be in her office." Mrs. Anderson replied. Mrs. Collins was the school guidance counselor. I was a little confused as to why she wanted to see me now, of all times.
"Oh. Okay." I said, turning around again. "Bye, Mrs. Anderson!"
"Bye Claire. Have a good summer!"
"You too!" I called back, turning down the hallway. .
Her door was open. She was sifting through papers on her desk, so I knocked on the open door, just to let her know I was there. She looked up at the noise.
"Hi, Mrs. Collins. You wanted to see me?" I asked.
"Hi, Claire. Yes, I did. I'm so sorry to do this - especially on your last day, but I was looking through some stuff and I saw something that caught my eye." Mrs. Collins began.
"Oh. What did you see?"
"Well, I saw that you haven't done a lot of community service during your time here." She said.
"Community service?" I asked.
"Volunteer work, that sort of thing." Mrs. Collins said.
"Oh. Is that bad?"
"What college do you want to go to, Claire?"
"Oh, I don't know. I have a couple places in mind. Georgetown? Hamilton College?"
"Then yes it's bad. They really really like volunteer work. You need to get some hours in. Soon." Mrs. Collins said.
"You're joking." I responded. I was shocked. I hadn't given even a thought to volunteer work, but now that it had come up I felt kind of stupid I hadn't.
"Not in the slightest."
"Well, what can I do?" I asked.
"Well, there are some internships I can set you up with for next year, but in the meantime, I would suggest volunteering for some summer jobs." Mrs. Collins replied.
"Okay. What kind of jobs?"
"Well, you could do some work at the botanical gardens, lifeguarding, working ice cream trucks..." she looked up. I shook my head. In the DC summer heat, all of those jobs sounded miserable.
"Okay, well, there's also the camp counselor job at Camp Canyon Moon." Mrs. Collins added.
"Camp Canyon Moon?"
"It's a summer camp in Virginia. Up on Hawksbill Mountain." She explained. That sounded promising. It's cooler up in the mountains. Plus the job sounded easy enough. I'd babysat before. How different were they really?
"That sounds great! When does it start?" I asked.
"Two weeks. It lasts until July 17th."
"Oh wow. That's... soon."
"I know. I understand if you'd rather not. It is a lot of your summer."
"Yeah." I said. I thought about it. What would I do if I stayed home? And I needed to get this done. A month in the cool, beautiful mountains of Virginia seemed so much better than 2 months in an ice cream truck dealing with the summer heat.
"But not my whole summer." I added.
"So can I let them know you're available?"
"Yeah." I said. "I'll be there."
"Great! I'll send you the information tomorrow via email. It'll have your packing list and important dates."
"Sounds great. Thank you so much, Mrs. Collins."
"No problem, Claire. Have a good summer! I've heard it's really beautiful up there." She smiled.
"You too, Mrs. Collins. Let's hope so." I replied, and walked out of her office and to my car.
At my car, I was met by my very hot, very angry best friend.
"Shit." I said under my breath when I saw her sitting on the hood of my car. I had totally forgotten I'd promised Frankie I'd give her a ride.
"Where have you been? I've been waiting forever, and it's hotter than hell out here." Frankie growled. I unlocked the car and she opened the door and got in.
"I'm so sorry." I said, also getting in. "I had to go see Mrs. Collins."
"Mrs. Collins? Why?" Frankie asked. We put on our seatbelts and I started the car.
"She just wanted to talk about something." I said, pulling out of the parking lot. Now was not the time to tell Frankie I wouldn't be in town all summer. "Hey, you wanna get ice cream?" I asked.
"Yeah, okay." Frankie replied.
Camp Canyon Moon was pushed out of my mind as got our ice cream and drove to Anacostia Park, as per our last day of school tradition. We laughed and talked and took pictures. Then I took Frankie home.
"Bye Frank. Sorry again for making you wait so long. " I said. We sat in my car in front of her house.
"It's okay." Frankie replied. "Thanks for the ice cream."
"You're welcome. Love you." Frankie got out.
"Love you!" And she closed the door.
I drove home, and just like that junior year was over.
