CHAPTER SIX

RULES

Alex looked at the ladder skeptically not sure what to make of it. Grace could sense his nervousness but she waited patiently for him to speak first.

I've never been up there. I don't think anyone has ever been up there for years to be honest, he admitted. Grace understood what he meant, it was where the fire started. She couldn't imagine the Heelshires ever wanting to enter that place after what happened to their son.

I went up there yesterday, it does look like no one has visited the attic in a long time, she told him and he turned to look at her like she was crazy.

Why would you go there? He asked bewildered.

The ladder just opened and I guess I was curious, she explained.

It opened? He asked and touched the ladder that0

was suddenly pulled back up into the ceiling by itself with a loud bang. Both Alex and Grace took a step back surprised.

Well that thing is probably broken and that's where the noises were coming from, he said readjusting his posture.

I'm not so sure about that, maybe we should check up there, she said crossing her arms over her chest. It couldn't be just the ladder, the noises were coming from all around the house. She had stayed awake all night listening carefully from behind her door.

There must be a hook downstairs in the kitchen, we could use it to pull down the ladder and hopefully climb up without getting killed, he joked.

Are you afraid of the monsters in the attic Alex? She asked him teasingly.

No, but you definitely are considering that you locked yourself in your room all night, he teased back.

Well what do you expect me to do if someone is in the house? I'm pretty sure that a mansion in the middle of nowhere is a perfect spot for thieves and I'm not planning to play hero all by myself, she defended herself.

Why don't we go get that hook so we can catch those monsters in the attic? He laughed as he turned to go downstairs but a noise caught their attention.

It was the same creaking noises she heard all night, but this time it was louder. Now that she was out in the hallway and she could hear the sound clearly she realized what it actually was, footsteps. Someone was walking right above their heads in the attic.

Do you hear that? She whispered taking a couple of steps back, Alex remained where he was but she could see the fear on his face.

Is this what you heard last night? He asked and she nodded not daring to speak. Then the sound stopped and the house was eerily quiet. Alex took a hesitant step forward but he signaled for her to stay where she was. Another sound came from the attic as if something heavy was getting dragged across the floor.

I think we should leave, Grace whispered. Alex did not had time to answer as the sound of glass breaking made them both jump and then the ladder dropped down.

Run! Alex grabbed her arm and they run downstairs, they went into the kitchen and Alex was frantically looking for something. He opened the cabinet behind the back door and pulled out an iron hook.

Stay here, if I don't come back in five minutes go get help my car's right over there, he pointed outside the window. Grace panicked, she didn't want to be left alone and she didn't want him to face whoever was up there by himself.
