along with junko enoshima , the ultimate despair / fashionista , byakuya togami caused not only the tragedy , but the greatest , most despair inducing event in human history

everything started one day , after classes . junko enoshima came up to byakuya after their shared class was over , and expressed how she wanted him to meet her on the abandoned plain of the right wing of hope's peak academy .

as dangerous as it seemed , byakuya was intrigued . and , he went .

inside the abandoned plain - which was really just a soundproof room with a table , and a lockable door - junko took byakuya into the room and locked it with the help of mukuro ikusaba , who was on the outside of the door .

junko took byakuya back into the room , pushing in a wall . it led to a hallway , which led down to a vat of a boiling chemical known as polyestherine carbonate , which is a harsh chemical that absorbs through the skin and causes blocking of the emotions compassion , fear , empathy , joy , and disgust . this chemical ( which was named D3S-P41R by junko ) also blocked most physical pain censors .

within this new trance of despair , togami was filled with the unmeetable need to hurt all the people who had wronged him .

this included everyone in his family , excluding his older sister shinobu and his butler aloysius . both of them were converted to the " ways of despair " , as junko called it . they were simply turned into his own personal servants , and they helped the warriors of hope too .
