Pain. That's what woke me from my deep slumber. Unbearable pain. I was hurting so bad from head to toe. It felt like I had been ran over by a bus. Not just a normal bus but something larger, perhaps something like a double decker bus.
I tried opening my eyes but failed several times. I couldn't tell if it was because they were crusted over or if it was because I lacked the strength and energy to do it. I inhaled slowly, just listening to what was going on around me. I could hear someone breathing as well as someone snoring softly.
I concentrated on the persons breathing for what felt like forever before I final got the strength to open my eyes. I gasped as I stared into a bright white light. "She's awake." I heard a soft thump before the light disappeared. "Hey dumbass, I told you we should have turned the light off."
"Alison," a voice said as my brother stepped into my line of vision. "Brenthan, send someone to get our parents and the doctor!"
Alex grabbed my hand and squeezed it tightly. "God, A. I thought I lost you."
"Move over," one voice that I knew very well grabbed my hand. My whole body warmed up and I saw him. He was as beautiful as ever, maybe even more so. "Oh, Alison. I'm so sorry." A single tear fell from his cheek leaving me very confused.
I couldn't move so I was listen to every little thing going on around me. I heard the door open and new voices entered the room. A man who appeared to be in his late forties introduced himself.
"Alison, my name is Doctor Jay. I've been taking care of you. How are you feeling?"
"H...hu...hurting..."
He started pumping a foot pedal and my torso began to rise up. He didn't stop until I was sitting upright. I could see him clearly now. He was a man with dark hair and a receding hairline. "Hurting is normal, sweetie. Your body went under a great amount of pressure, stress, and change. It will take sometime to get used to but it's part of you so you will learn quickly."
I opened my mouth to speak but no words came out. He grabbed a white styrofoam cup with a straw and placed it to my mouth. I eagerly drank the contents Inside. Feeling refreshed I was finally able to speak. "What.. are you.. talking about?"
The doctor looked over at my mother and Reese's parents. They all nodded and my mother stepped forward. "Alison, hunny, you've been awakened."
Awakened?
"There was no other option. You were nearly drained of all your blood when they found you. You were slipping from this world quickly. They didn't have time and they had to choose for you. They choose to save you."
Save me? Is this how they decide to save me? To awaken me without their consent? I looked back and forth between everyone and shook my head. "Can everyone just get out?" Nobody moved. "Now," I screamed at the top of my lungs. They all started retreating towards the door. "I'm so sorry, Alison." Reese cast one last glance towards me before shutting the door softly behind him.
As the door shut, the flood gates opened. Tears raced down my face and I did nothing to stop them or wipe them away.
I couldn't believe it. My whole life as I knew it was gone. I was no longer a human. I was being selfish but I didn't care. Whose place was it to choose wether I lived or died? What gave them the right to determine my future?
Tick. Tick. Tick. Tick.
I stared at the clock on the wall for two solid hours before I finally rose to my feet. The tile felt good against my bare feet. I slowly drifted towards the door, afraid of what was waiting for me on the other side. I cracked the door and peeked out. Reese was the only one waiting for me. His knees were drawn to his chest. I stepped out into the hallway right as he looked up.
"Alison," he said as he stood and walked over to me.
"Reese."
"I'm sorry I did this to you... I couldn't live without you. You are my soul mate and now we can finally be together without any laws trying to keep us apart."
I bit my lip. "It's okay," I mumbled softly.
"Come on, let's get you changed and introduce you to some Vampire 101. I will also show you around..."
Reese babbled on and on causing me to just smile and nod as I followed him. Normally I would feel elated just listening to him babble but now? All I felt was hallow and empty. Was this normal or had I lost all interest in everything. Only time would tell.
