It couldn’t be real.

Adam felt Dava’s distress the second her heart rate kicked up. They had been discussing the final details of their plan to deal with Blake and her cursed lies. Afterwards, he planned to approach his father and the council with his mating request to Dava to make it all official. If his father denied him his request Adam was fully prepared to challenge him as Alpha of the pack.

He refused to allow anyone to stand in his way to claim what rightfully belonged to him, not even his own father. His wolf had already claimed Dava as his own and soon enough he hoped that she would claim him too.

In the meantime, he would do whatever it took to protect what he considered most precious to him.

Blake's bold lie had now become a threat to his mate and he had every intention to removing any and all threats from her by whatever means necessary.

Dava's safety was what matters the most to him.

He had already made the decision that they would leave first thing in the morning after the reinforcements that Logan had called arrived to protect his Dava. She was too weak to travel and Adam was already struggling with the idea of having to leave her alone. But things needed to be dealt with and he had to do what was best for his mate.

Logan had assured him that the guys he called would protect Dava to their death. He had been telling him a little bit about the guys that he called and promised that they would be loyal to both him and their future Luna when Adam's wolf went of full scale alert.

Logan sensed the immediate change in his Alpha. “What’s wrong?“ he asked him sincerely.

Adam didn’t answer him. Instead he jumped up from the couch he was sitting on and ran towards the bedroom. Dava was awake and something was terribly wrong. Something was agitating her.

Pushing the door it open, it slammed hard against the wall. He took one look at his injured mate who was thrashing around on the bed and quickly closed the distance between them. Bending over her he grabbed her head with both hands and held her face still. “Dava, sweetheart, look at me,” he demanded. “You’re safe now.”

Diamond shaped tears streamed down her cheeks. “No,” she cried, fighting against his hold. “No, no, no!”

Adam was torn. Her tears were his undoing. She seemed caught up in the realms of some sort of nightmare. If they were fully bonded he would be able to see into her mind and know what terrified her so.

But they weren’t, not yet anyway. So he didn’t know what scared her so.

“Dava,” he said her name calmly, hoping to pull her back to reality. “Open your eyes, baby. See me. Your safe now, I will never let anyone hurt you again.”

“I can’t,” she cried out and once again tried to jerk herself away from his firm but gentle hold. When he refused to let her pull away from him, her eyes flew open and she stilled.

Her whole body stiffened underneath his determined touch. Where her face was being held by his hands, delicious tingles danced on her skin. But it was his eyes, his golden steely eyes that held her in complete rapture.

Mate!

Worried, Adam leaned in just scant inches from her face. So close that she could almost taste the sweet earthy scent that radiated from him. “Breathe, sweetheart.”

The whispered order sank deep into her consciousness. She hadn’t even realized that she had been holding her breath. Like a fish out of water she sucked in a big gulp of air and slowly exhaled, her whole body trembling from the close proximity of her mate.
