She could have been with him when he became a billionaire. She could have even been his wife if she had been a little patient if she had been enduring if she had not been too greedy if she had believed in that dream. But she had stopped believing.
She finally got to ask that question that had been on her mind since she saw that magazine in her friend's house.
"How do you do it Demmy? How... Do you... It's just nine years... And... You are this... Change... Different... How.." She asked perplexed.
The corner of Demilade lips quirked. And he rubbed his finger around the top of his glass cup.
"Nine years is a long year Mika. Very long years. That is three thousand two hundred and eight seven days. And it's so long for God to do His work. A week is enough for God to change a man's life when his time comes. And a lot can and had happened in nine years. "
"I remember you broke up with me on the fourth of February twenty eleven and I graduated from the university in August of the same year. Shortly after you left, the company I was working for part-time get bankrupt and close down. It was a big hit for me. I had planned on working there as a full-time worker with better pay. But that ruined my plan but thanks to God and Mr Obaonileowo, a man who we once worked in the same company. He had gained a better position in a very nice construction company and he helped me. He recommended me and I got a nice position and nice pay in the same company immediately after I graduated. It was great and a better chance. But I wasn't satisfied. I wasn't happy with it. I never felt complete. "
"Then you always asked me what I do with the money I made from helping students to write assignments and text, from Bayo and his family, the pay from the night shift at the night club, the money I made from working in the construction company and those extra works I do for people at home. Do you remember?" He asked looking her directly in the eyes. The look in her eyes told him she do. And his lips tugged up slightly.
"My mom always tells me that I am her responsibility and I should never use my hard-earned money to keep the family. She never allowed me to use that money for the family and that is why it felt like despite all the work we didn't improve. It was only in a few cases that I am allowed to help. I got used to doing the saving. At a point in time, I didn't know why I was saving that money. But when the bank put the company I work for part-time on sale, I knew that is what I wanted. I had always wanted a house, and a good life for my mom, I wanted to have cars like Bayo's brothers. I wanted to be a boss of myself. And the opportunity comes all at once. I guess when it is your time, it is your time. With my life savings and the help of my friends who help me get investors I was able to buy and start my own construction business. I modified the building to my taste. I didn't stop there, I bought hotels and other buildings for my business. I merge companies with other companies that are about to go down the drain. And my business grows. My first contract from the government made my other dreams come true. I bought my own house, my first two cars and some other things I wanted. And it opened the door for better projects from wide and near. Things had been good ever since. I got whatever I always wanted. And all those days of heart pain, suffering, short sleep and poverty were worth it." He chuckles. "It just put a smile on my face when I think about it. And it has become my own story."
He didn't need to tell Yimika all that. But he felt this urge to let her know. He knew how curious and amazed she was at how his life had turned out. So he needed to let her know who he was now, how he made it and how those dreams she had once said wasn't enough had made him the man he never expected, one of the youngest billionaire of his time.
