I shut my suitcase and picked it up, tucking my Hogwarts letter into my pocket. "Brinley, time to leave. We don't want to miss the train!" The summer of 1971 was coming to an end and I was attending Hogwarts for the first time. "Coming!" I called back and sprinted my way outside.
I get into the car and feel a mixture of nervousness and excitement as we make our way to Kings Cross.
Once we get there my father helps me carry my heavy bags up the steps. I hug them goodbye and make my way to the brick wall. I see other people run into it and do the same.
The Hogwarts Express is directly in front of me. I walk towards it and get on. I walk down the aisles looking for an empty seat, but have only gotten halfway down when I yelp in pain. "Sorry about that!" said a small red-headed girl. She had stepped on my foot as she was getting out. "I was going to find the candy trolley, but I guess it's not here yet. Would you like to sit here?" She pats the seat next to her and I sit down. I notice a boy with greasy black hair and a hooked nose across from us.
"I'm Lily, and that's Severus."
"I'm Brinley. It's nice to meet you. Good thing I ran into you, too, because I had no idea where to sit."
"Is it your first year?" Severus finally says. "Yes, I'm a bit nervous."
"No way, us too!" Lily exclaims. We jerk forward as the train begins to move. Lily and I talked the whole way there, Severus remained quiet.
I tie my black hair into a ponytail and look at the large school in the distance. "Wow, there it is."
"It's so pretty!"
Once we get off the boats we're escorted to the Great Hall. I make sure to stay close to Lily. We sit down on one of the benches and wait to be called and be sorted. She went before me and got sorted into Gryffindor. Before I know it, my name is being called. "Laurence, Brinley!"
I walk up to the stool anxiously. I can't stand being the center of attention and everyone's eyes are on me. My legs begin to feel like jello as I sit down. My hands begin to shake and my chest is tight. Professor McGonagall places the Sorting Hat onto my head. "Ah, very witty. Smart, even," it begins. "Not very cunning, however. And ah, you do have a lot of courage." My eyes begin to tear up as I fidget with my robes. "Better be.. GRYFFINDOR!"
I jump up and go sit next to Lily as the Gryffindor table erupts into cheers. "I'm so happy we're in the same house!" She says excitedly. "Yeah, me too." I wipe the tears off my eyes as we wait for everyone else to be sorted. One by one a group of boys assemble across from us. It was quite obvious they met on the train and had become remarkably close in that timeframe.
One of them tells a horribly corny joke and they laugh so loud my ears hurt. "Oh, can you be quiet?" I snap. They all look at me and begin laughing. I raise an eyebrow in confusion and disgust. They each quiet down and stick out their hand for me and Lily to shake. "James Potter."
"Sirius Black."
"Remus Lupin."
"Peter Pettigrew." The last one, Peter, merely squeaked out his name and shrunk back. "Pleasure." I mumble. "I'm Lily and this is Brinley!" Lily is much more enthusiastic about becoming friends with them than I am. They're too loud and overbearing.
"Are you enjoying Hogwarts so far?" Remus asks me as I hear Severus being sorted into Slytherin in the background. "Yeah, I guess. It's much more interesting than back home."
"Interesting? Do you not do magic at home or learn about it?"
"I'm a muggle-born."
"Oh, well then I'd see why you'd think it's interesting here. I love the projection of the stars on the ceiling here."
I look up and see exactly what he was talking about. I didn't even notice the galaxy above us until now.
"Wow, yeah that is pretty!" Lily tugs on my shirt and I look over at her. "Severus was sorted into Slytherin! I'll barely get to see him!" I pat her shoulder. "It'll be alright, Lily. We might have some classes together."
Suddenly, food appears on the table. "Wow! Thank goodness, I'm absolutely starving." Sirius exclaims and stuffs his face with chicken.
I thought all was going well until I turned around and someone was standing there.
