Tanjiro seemed to figure it out as he went to grab a boulder, making me even more anxious.
He walked up to it, and I went by his side, just as nervous as he was. "A-Are you sure this is the way to do it?"
He looks at me and nods, hesitant as well. "I'll have to crush his skull... which means... hitting him over and over..."
"Isn't there some way we can just do this with one single blow? Does he have to suffer...?" I grab at his sleeve, and Tanjiro shares the same uncertainty with me.
He grips the rock tighter, and can't even move as we both desperately try to think of something less gruesome.
Just as we're thinking, the head suddenly awakens, cursing at the both of us for killing his body.
I grip my staff even tighter, realization hitting me.

"Maybe I can use my airbending... B-But..."
"But what?"
"I-I can't take a life! All life is sacred! I can't kill someone! Demon or not!" I call out. I can't do it... No matter how hard I try hate the demon in front of me, I can't kill anyone. It would go against everything I've learned!
The man behind us seems annoyed at our hesitant nature, neither of us wishing suffering on the poor demon, leaving us conflicted.
The first beams of sunlight catch our attention, and we both look at each other, and soon the demon.
As soon as light hit his flesh, he disintegrated into nothing, screaming in pain until he was gone.
Tanjiro dropped his boulder in terror as he reached to grab my hand tightly, and I squeeze it just as tight in fear.
"W-Wait..." Realization hit us, and we both turn around at once.
"NEZUKO!" We call out simultaneously, but she's nowhere to be seen, sending us both into a panic.
Tanjiro rushed up to the temple, and I felt relieved as he calmed down. Nezuko was safe and sound, hiding under the sheet in her basket.
"She's okay... Thank goodness."
"Wait, where's the old guy?" Tanjiro goes back outside and looks around, and we spot the man holding a burial for the people that demon killed.
The memory that struck me made me whimper, reminding me of the nuns my brother had killed, and the prayers my master would offer their graves.
Tanjiro heard me as he felt something was wrong, and he held my hand tightly as a way to comfort me, his gentle smile bringing me down to earth again as we approach the old man.
"Uhm... Excuse me?" Tanjiro calls, breaking the silence.
"My name, is Sakonji Urokodaki. You two are the ones Giyu Tomioka sent my way, correct?"
"Y-Yes, sir." I reply, still a little shaken up.
"I'm Y/N L/N."
"And my name's Tanjiro Kamado. And my sister's name is Nezuko."
"Tanjiro." The man says sternly, turning around to face Tanjiro. Although his mask covers his eyes, I can feel the glare he's sending our way.
"What do you intend to do if your sister eats a human?"
We're both taken aback by his question, startled when he walked up and slapped Tanjiro.
"You two are far too indecisive! You must learn to make decisions quickly! This is why neither of you could kill that demon!"
He also slapped me, making me wince. "And you! Saying you couldn't take a life, not even that of a demon with blood on his hands?!"
"Your tattoos don't lie about your heritage, and I've trained plenty of airbenders like you in my time. And you know what happened to them?!"
I shut my eyes as he keeps yelling, standing perfectly still as I know what he's about to say.
"They died! Slaughtered by the demons they were too kind to kill! You even dare hold the title of master with such a weak spirit?!"
I look down in silence as he turns his attention to Tanjiro again, my cheek stinging from the hit. Heavens, he hits even harder than my master Kana did!
"Do you know why it took you so long to answer my question? Because your resolve is too weak! There are two things you do if your sister eats a human : first, you kill her, then slit your own belly and die."
I was shocked as I listened to him.
"That's what it means to travel with a demon. But you must never allow this to happen, no matter what! Your sister must'nt eat an innocent person, ever! Have I made myself clear?!"
"Yes!" Tanjiro yells.
He looks to me and I nod quickly. "Yes, sir!"
He looks to the side, me and Tanjiro ready for his next words.
"Very well. I will test to see if you two are worthy of joining the Demon Slayer Corp. Take your sister and follow me."
