A loud alarm wakes me up. I rub my eyes and sit up. It takes me a second to realize what I'm hearing.

-emergency broadcast. Virus has spread across America, Europe, and Canada. Stay indoors.-

The broadcast repeats. I get up and and get downstairs. I yawn and turn on the news.

-All schools, shops, and restaurants are closed to suppress the rate of infections. The people who are infected, still look normal. Thought, they can be recognized by a pale or yellow skin color, and red eyes. Cities are infected and we are counting more then four million infected. Do not get close to the infected. Any contact with them will get you infected as well. These are the following videos we have of the situation.-

The video shows people who look like corpses. Some more then others. Some look like regular people. They walk, move, and claw at things around them. A chill runs down my spine. I switch the tv off and just think for a little. Trying to make a plan of what to do, I stare at the ground. The faded ringing of my phone snaps me out of thought. Upstairs. My phone is upstairs. I run up the stairs as quick as I can. The second I enter my bedroom the call ends. I sigh and take a deep breath as I pick it up. Eve. Eve called. I unlock my phone and start to dial her number, but before I can finish it rings again. I pick up.
"Amy? Amy?"
I hear scream in the background and Eve sounds panicked.
"I'm here. Are you okay."
"Go to dads place. Get the gun. They are here."
My parents are divorced, I live at my moms place. Dad owns a rifle and a pistol. But there is one problem....

His house is eight miles from where I am, and in the city.

"Eve, the city has been infected. How will I ever make it."
"Just get it done! Without guns we won't make it at all."
I hear a door slam and all the other noise is drowned out. She must have gone inside somewhere.
"Where are you?"
"The camping grounds. I need time to figure a way out. Please-"
A sort of growl sounds, and then a loud bang.
"Eve?!"
"I'm okay. Just hurry."
"Okay. I'm on my way."
"Talk later."
"Talk later"

I end the call and grab my backpack. I throw on some appropriate clothes and I head downstairs. I get my shoes on and I pack some food into the backpack, along with two bottles of water. I throw on a thin jacket and I get my keys. I lock the door and the second I turn away from the house a alarm starts blaring. It's in the village.
Shit.
I get to the shed and take out a small axe. I've always been good with one of those. I get some batteries and a flashlight. I take our small first aid kit as well before I hurry on my way.

The walk will be long. Not too dangerous until I reach the city. My dad was in the army. He has equipment that we need. For the fact of growing up with a soldier as father, I know a thing or two about fighting, shooting, and surviving. As does Eve. She'll be fine. But I need to get to her fast. I walk fast, making sure I'm not running, to spare my energy for what I feel would be a long night ahead.

The roads out here are dark. Small paths between trees and open fields. It's tense, you can feel it. My flashlight is off. I've learned that in the open and dark, you should use the light of nature. After your eyes adjust, you can see clearer. In the city, with short ranges, you use your flashlight if needed. I'm gripping my axe tightly as I make my way to the city. Five miles till I reach the city, and three before I reach my dads place.

A long and tough journey ahead
